We just had the same issue, and I got a 4ft, 1x6 piece of poplar, and routed the edges with a double round-over...Slotted the back too. THEN I found your video and got confirmation that I wasn't crazy for doing it. THANKS!!!!!

Great idea! I needed this. But my problem was rectangular. I suggested we buy a rectangular medallion but he opted to move the boxes. So much dust and so much more work than was necessary. We should have made your idea only rectangular!

Don’t the wire connections have to be in the jbox?
@handydadtv
@handydadtv Год назад
I can’t say my method is the “proper way” to do this. But wires are typically connected inside the light fixture, not in the box. So I just extended the wires.

It’s covered by a decoration; it’s not permanently hidden in a wall. I don’t know the letter of the code though.

It for-sure would pass if there’s a junction box plate going over the wires in the box. You can get them with a hole in the centre to feed the cable out. You can get those plates at HD or Rona.

Handy dad, I have a similar issue. Recently somewhat remodeled a small 4x8 room which originally was wasted space holding only our electrical boxes into a pantry area. My problem is the old light fixture is too close to the door, and also has no switch. Was thinking about doing something similar and using a hanging light cap with a small hole on the side to run wiring through to a new led wrap around light about 16-18 inches away... At least I think this is fairly similar to what you did... My biggest concern is using correct wiring Did you use 14g Romex w/ a ground?
@handydadtv
@handydadtv Год назад
Identify the circuit breaker for that light. If it’s a 15-amp breaker, you can use 14-gauge wire. If it’s a 20-amp breaker, use 12-gauge wire.

1:41 Is the mounting plate screwed to the ceiling joists? How is the weight of the chandelier supported?
@handydadtv

The light is mounted to the wood; the wood is screwed to the ceiling joists.
@josephzajdler
@josephzajdler 3 года назад
So the size of the medallion has to be big enough so that the center of it is where you want your light fixture center to be, and, it covers the electrical box, right? How did you route the electrical wire from the electrical box to the center of the medallion? Is it squashed between the ceiling and the medallion? Do you have any pictures/video of that?
@handydadtv
@handydadtv 3 года назад
Correct. I needed to move it 13 inches so my medallion was 31”. 13 x 2 = 26 plus I added 5 inches to be sure it covered the box completely. I routed a groove on the back to bring the wire from the box to the hole. I show it at 1:17.

@@handydadtv is it safe for the wires to be connected outside of the junction box? I’m having trouble he same issue with an off center vanity light- ugh
@handydadtv
@handydadtv 2 года назад
The light connection is inside a metal bracket so no risk there, but others have commented that covering the old box like this isn’t code compliant.

I need to move my light over 24" and the base plate to be rectangular as well. is that too much to look nice?
@handydadtv
@handydadtv 2 года назад
It would need to be at least 50” or so. Yea that’s big. I would swag the light (if possible), move the box, or consider building a dropped ceiling section above the light. I’d use drywall and crown molding, not ceiling tiles.
@skybluemarshall
@skybluemarshall Год назад
What is the rectangular light base like on the bottom? I've been looking at chandeliers with long rectangular bases like your light. I was wondering what would prevent me from mounting the light base off center instead of centering it over my fixture box?
@handydadtv
@handydadtv Год назад
It has a base plate with a big hole for a 4” ceiling box in the middle. But you would mount it off center and just drill another hole in the mounting plate. Be sure to use a grommet to protect the wires if you go this route.
@skybluemarshall
@skybluemarshall Год назад
Thanks! I'm guessing that I would need a hole saw bit to drill the new large hole in the mounting plate.
@handydadtv
@handydadtv Год назад
It doesn’t need to be a big hole. Just enough to pass the wire through.

Not sure. The medallion is temporary so we didn’t permanently cover the box in the ceiling, like covering it with drywall. Not sure this is any different than a really big light.
