We have a class 6 tow vehicle, an older model, but still class 6. We pulled with a pickup for years, and had little issue, unless we needed to stop quickly, or were pulling a long hill. When we moved to the larger tow vehicle, long trips became much more enjoyable, and we arrived less worn down by the drive. We will drive as much as 11 hours without stopping for more than a few minutes for a bio break. I used to have to drive a quarter of a mile ahead with the pickup (mostly due to people being rude, or just uninformed). With the hauler, it is much less stressful. I can drive for 10 hours and get out of the vehicle as if I had driven a car. I will not go back to a pickup as a haul vehicle, unless it is a small trailer. We currently haul a 34' horse trailer that weighs 16,500 lbs empty and dry. There is no 1 ton dually I would trust with this load.

You have to spec the truck special for this with the bigger engines. I have personally been looking at a 9 liter with the auto shift trans. at 1150ft lbs I should be able to keep up with a 3500 for speed and stop like I am supposed to. I expect to use it to pull 30K trailers. Not sure how they manage to justify the 152K price. I think a 15K bed on a 90K truck should put it at 105K, not 152K. Sir Timothy's Piano Time I believe for uphill speed while towing the new duallys would crush this freightliner. As far as long term wear and tear items the freightliner will outrun a smaller class 3 truck. Comfort for long hauls would definitely be no competition, the air ride would be untouchable. With larger air brakes, controlling weight would be much safer. It would tow 30,000 lbs like a new dually would tow 15,000 lbs.
@TheUnsureFox
@TheUnsureFox 5 лет назад
@@TermiteBenny Makes perfect sense. The way this truck is designed, as shown in the video, seems to be infinitely more robust. The torque numbers would make it to where, yes, it may not go as fast on hills like Ike, but I couldn't imagine it would slow down much, and its cooling system must be tremendous. It wouldn't imagine it getting too warm on a long uphill climb pulling most any RV or horse trailer.

I drive this model truck for work as a bucket truck, these trucks are MUCH MUCH better at towing, no matter how much weight you put on the back, you forget its there, they’re literally tanks, they never break down, much more reliable, and the stopping power is absolutely amazing, you honestly wouldn’t even need trailer brakes. These would put any dually to shame, no matter what pickup it is, they start to feel sketchy with a ton of weight. This is for serious haulers.

Most sales guys at the Big 3 PU truck dealerships don't know enough about the products to help someone with or through any of the technical aspects of those vehicles. I recently went into a Chevy dealer to look at their 3/4 ton line up. They sent me to talk to a so called truck sales expert who did not know what I meant by 3/4 ton, had no clue on pay-load or towing capacities. He said we only have 1500, 2500 and 3500 series PUs and he took me over to the brochure desk. This is a true story. I said, okay thanks, walked out and drove 22 miles to the next Chevy dealer. Had a similar experience at a local Ford dealer. I wont associate myself with a business that takes that little effort to train sales staff. It likely permeates their entire business and I wont risk it by buying from a dealer like that. 1 hour of class room training and an 1 hour or 2 going over the trucks with a mechanic could set up a sales guy to know enough to help and learn forward before putting them in front of customers. Its pathetic. I''ll be visiting a Ram dealer soon. Cant wait.......

@@vicka7088 that +30k towing rate means you can but honestly you should never cross the 80% load in a regular basis, which is around 25k. Semis in other hand are designed from the ground up with maxing out on trailer weight all the time and that's why they last so much.

For the 1 or 2 people here that are considering buying this, I'm a former big rig driver (OTR). The difference between a dually pickup and something like this is absolutely massive. The confidence, the reliability, the brakes, even the fuel economy. I promise you, you will never go back to a light duty pickup if you're actually going to be hauling heavy stuff. Note: Cummins engines(ISX, which this isn't) tend to be a bit more finicky (read: expensive) with maintenance. Detroit engines are not, as they're much simpler. They're both great though.

@jddiesel7409 5 лет назад
Idividezero DD13 is major piece of shit, especially in an M2 chassis. oil leaks, coolant leaks, after treatment problems. Let alone how much the m2 itself sucks. after over a decade, the blower motor wiring still has the same issues.

Chris Cook The older auto shifts had lots of problems, x-y motors, wiring harnesses, and tcm failures. but, I haven't dug into one in a decade. surely they've gotten better, but I just haven't been exposed to them. the Allison's have been decent, seem to have more wiring problems than anything.

@jddiesel7409 5 лет назад
Chris Cook : honestly, the quantity doesn't seem to matter. 100,000 trucks with the same bad wiring used is just as bad as 10,000 built with the same bad wiring. anybody running a fleet of trucks will see the same problems happen with multiple trucks from batches of sister trucks. if you have any choice in the matter, consider how cramped it will be to get worked on. the harder it is, the more time it takes, the more it costs.

TFL >>> interesting video! Just an FYI, with direct air brakes (at least here in Commiephornia) you'll need to have a Commercial Class B driver's license with an air brakes endorsement. If the air brakes are not direct, which means that they are "air assisted", then you might be able to get away with a 'regular' Class B license without the air brakes endorsement or perhaps even a Class A non-commercial license. Again, like AC said, even though there are pickups that have comparable 'power' and torque numbers to these mini semi-trucks, it is always better to be over-powered (engine and brakes-wise) than under-powered or simply breaking even; this you'll appreciate in an emergency situation where that extra braking or engine power will help you either avoid an accident or overtake a dangerous obstacle. Thank you again for the excellent video!

Most people have no idea about towing, the average Joe that is, they see these big Rams,Fords and GM’s sure they’ll handle weight but it’s all in knowing how to drive. It’s also worth noting that trailers are getting much heavier, especially horse trailers with living quarters, and thus you you see engine output increased, however if you want true longevity and less maintenance you need to step up to an industrial chassis 350,450 class trucks have a hard time hauling a brick in the wind and frankly Ram trucks outfitted with Cummins engines really are the only rigs that can handle certain loads and maintain normal temperatures such as engine and transmission whereas GM’s and Ford typically run hotter under load. That’s not meant as a discouragement just some information.

Great comment powder river. The GMs seem to survive the hotshot business, but not the Fords. They rarely make it past 200k without a major problem The Rams if treated right will go a million miles. That is a big if. If not, they last a little longer than the Ford.

We have the Cummins L9/Allison 3000 in our Mack’s at work,they are a monster, rated for 80,000 lbs GCWR in our Mack’s ! So this powertrain will pull like the trailers not even there. The 19500 gvwr is low,they should spec a heavier rear and go to 22500 or 26000, IMO . You could easily overload the payload of the truck /rear axle with 4 ppl and a tongue heavy Teton 5th wheel or front living room dual slide 5er. There’s no reason for that this truck can handle way more.
@chriscook2036

Great comment John. I thought the same. They are doing everything they can to keep the ride soft, Hence the light rear end. I would move up to the 22500 and put it all in the back because you are right. I have been entertaining buying a chassis with these specs and adding my own bed. I got a quote of 95K for the chassis and can't image the bed costing more than 15K. I plan on spending 110K instead of 150K on a baby semi. Not sure what trans to use.
