There were many bad imitators of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles back in the late 80's and early 90's, and Ninja Clowns -- a 1991 arcade game by Strata -- may just be the weirdest of the lot. A very odd beat 'em up that's most certainly worth a look, even if it's also a load of rubbish.

Is Ninja Clowns everything you thought it would be? Have a shout about it here. Thanks for watching :)

The enemies are fantastically designed. If it had a more appealing character for the player it could have been remembered fondly I think. They should have made a Ninja Hamsters video game, those comics were my favourite fake Turtles when we discovered them in the 90s when getting into comics. The creator actually emailed me a bit to discuss the franchise years ago. I think he was happy to have touched someone's life with the comic ❤😊

Adolescent Radioactive Black-Belt Hamsters!!!! Just searched to find the name. The comic was awesome, like the original TMNT comics 😁😁😁 I think the guy told me a collection was being launched, wonder if it ever came out. Anyone else remember the ARBBH?

Strange, but I get the feeling that with a bit more polish, this could have actually been something. Maybe if they leaned into the creepy/gross aesthetic, made it eye-catching with more colourful and vibrant graphics, added some extra playable characters... Dunno really, I just think this had the potential to be a real coin-muncher with a bit more effort.

Over Christmas break one year, I scrolled through MAME and launched every game that was set as "working" and added the titles to their own category because I knew I'd find some interesting ones. I did not add any of the gambling, casino, mahjong, etc. like games. I remember coming across this one completely confused and humored at the same time. It just seemed so goofy and I couldn't even imagine who came up with this idea of all things to slap the ninja label on. As Kim said though, it was 1991 with Turtle Mania in full force. I would love to see this arcade cab out in the wild. The best way to experience this is to enable the MAME cheats for infinite weapons and blow through it by spraying everyone with seltzer. I never ever thought this game would get a RU-vid video. Thanks Kim!

With the amount of info on Strata/Incredible Technologies here I'm surprised you didn't mention one of the other most well known arcade games they were the developer on, Street Fighter The Movie!

Between Incredible Technologies and Volition (and a handful of others in Chicago of course) it always seemed surprising to me that Illinois had multiple thriving video game companies, but alas thanks to Embracer embracing Saudi Arabia we now are down one Volition

I don't know why hearing Kim make an icp reference makes me smile, but it does, Also juggalos often call each other ninja...so this is inadvertently the ultimate juggalo game?

Ah yes the "Ninja" heyday of the 80s and early 90s. I'm amazed no studio had the brass neck to publish a game called Ninja Ninja and boast it had double the Ninja action

the real question is "why clowns?" ughh.. clowns are the stuff of nightmares,.. it's ok to use them as part of the villain roster. but not the protagonist.

I miss this era of gaming. Aaahh... Developers were trying anything for some extra cash, trying to "copy and paste" other sucessful games (Sonic being one of them)... We need those days to come back. lol XD

Speaking of Gals Panic, I'd love to see you tackle that specific series or Kaneko in general in a video, I'm sure there's some kind of interesting story there! :)

4:35 these baddies bear a striking resemblance to some enemy models seen in another, much more popular beat em up game...you know, The Simpsons arcade game. Does anyone else see it?

This game is a collection of the most early 90's, created by an early stage Gen-X-er humor I've ever seen. Back when clowns were a trope of not being very funny/only funny ironically and kind of annoying instead of the ubiquitous scary/evil clown tropes we know today. Everything else feels like some sort of underground/indie comics type humor, oddly the kind of indie comics that TMNT stemmed from and had its fair share of bad knockoffs calling themselves parody. Seems like it would have worked better in that venue than a video game.

I kinda like the graphics. The colors and the exaggerated caricatures and the pixel art give me sort of a Amiga sort of feel. Actually kinda makes me think of that Three Stooges game for some reason.

Actually doing some research I found out that one of the artists, Stan Fukuoka worked on some interesting stuff. He did a lot of work on pinball games. And he also did some work for Will Vinton studios. And he worked on Tiny Toon Adventures and Animaniacs.

Sadly enough, Ninja Clowns sounds like it could've been a surprise smash hit on paper. The game's concept sounds fun, creepy, and ridiculous that it could have worked if properly executed. The game has you playing as clowns and fight waves of ridiculous enemies and bosses (2 of those bosses: the spider clown and 3 headed clown giant looking like they came straight out of Killer Klowns From Outer Space). Obviously, the game embraced some of the absurdity it had, but sadly, everything was badly executed with its sluggish controls, ugly graphics & textures, and worst of all, it's obnoxious sound effects that rival Dino-Rex (an arcade fighting game featuring obnoxious, anal-screaming, demon possessed cocaine dinosaurs). In all seriousness (ironic because it's about clowns), if you want to play an arcade game about clowns. Just play either Circus Charlie (an arcade platformer by Konami in which you play as a cute little clown, who must navigate across all 6 circus acts with each having their own strategy to complete) and Carnevil (a light gun arcade shooter by Midway in which you enter a haunted amusement park where you shoot waves of evil clowns, zombies, mutants, and demons to stop the evil ring master, Token Taker). At least those games are fun, unlike this terrible joke mentioned in the video.

Great insight into this less known title. Dull lifeless looking backgrounds , animation not smooth at all I don't think I'd be rushing back to play this one I'm afraid.

its ninja, wether there is 1 ninja or 1000 ninja...... you don't pluralise the word ninja......
@anactualmotherbear
@anactualmotherbear 8 месяцев назад
Add ninja to the title and 90s kids are interested in it ten fold... Add clowns to the title and interest drops by the same amount. That nullifies this game.

This game is so ugly it looks like a fake one used in a 90's movie the school bully whose dad is the town mayor plays to establish his villain credentials.
