I really like how Holga and her ex-husband being a halfling are initially played for a laugh but it ends up being two very hurt people who clearly loved each other at one point coming to terms with what they have lost and agreeing to part as friends in a mature way.

With still a bit of immaturity, at first, from Hulga since she wants to prove him wrong. But it's just copium.

I love the full circle created by that line, "I wasn't trying to bring your mom back, I was trying to bring my wife back. " At first when he said that I thought, "Well that's kind of a weird way to put it but I get what you are saying." but the end when he has to decide to save her 'mom' and not his wife it's a great payout.

the appeal of D&D is that it's not meant to be won... it's meant to be played. the more you play, the more crazy situations you'll encounter, and the more laughs you'll get out of everyone.

Exactly. You don't play to win, you play to take your character on a fun story.

Honestly failure in DND is just as good and more memorable than winning. This movie captures that feeling perfectly.
@vex2788

depends on the player, you can't tell someone their having fun wrong. Thats the point of DND, that everyone has fun in their own way. Whether thats the journey or winning every encounter or figuring out who the big bad is and RPing it out to the group. Something in it for everyone.

One big Easter egg in the movie is that the six main protagonists from the 1980s D&D cartoon make a cameo appearance. They are among the other contestants in the maze scene toward the end of the movie.

The actors who played the adventurers actually played a Dungeons and Dragons game together during filming. One of the writers was their Dungeon Master. They played as their characters from the movie, and the adventure took place after the events of the movie. Maybe we can hope this was a playtest for a sequel? How cool would that be for us and the actors themselves?
@AL-fl4jk

They did it before filming too to help everyone get over that “first day of school” awkwardness

It's actually kind of hard to make a list of D&D references in this movie, because EVERYTHING in it is very D&D. The monsters and spells were all taken directly from the game, and the characters were all very much playing their classes (except maybe Edgin, who didn't do any bardic magic, but who DID play the bard's role of moral support perfectly). What really makes it feel like D&D, though, is the way it captures the feeling of a bunch of people sitting at a table making up a story as it goes. The best example is the hither-thither staff. That was NOT magic item when they got it, the DM totally made it one on the spot so they'd have a way to cross the lava, and then they proceeded to abuse it for the rest of the adventure.

Even little details. Like Doric not having armor proficiency with heavy metal and a Strength below 12; disadvantage on stealth and 10’ slower movement speed to the other guard caught up easily.
@aziouss2863

I like how they did the "bard" class. It is beyond stupid for me to see a music based magic reserved just for them. Like why? Isent that a wizard/sorc thing? To me ANYONE can be a bard but the fighting part has to be believable. I don't think vicious mokery is really gonna do anything about the 2handed axe or the disintegrate spell...

I’m a 33 year old who started playing D&D two years ago and it’s so much fun. If you ever have the chance to play, I highly recommend it. Even if you don’t have the time or energy to commit to a full campaign, there are games called one-shots that can take 3-6 hours to play and it’s a full adventure in one go! I enjoyed this reaction and love that the movie clicks with people whether or not they play!
@leonielson7138
@leonielson7138 Год назад
Apparently, the principle actors actually sat down to play a game of D&D, with Justice Smith rolling poorly, Sophia Lillis just wanting to wild shape, and Chris Pine ignoring his character sheet and trying to role-play his way through every situation.
@perrycarters3113

I sort of love that. It also was a great way to show it on-screen; Druids, Sorcerers and Bards can all cast spells, but without leaning super-heavily on Metamagic and Wild Magic, both of which might be overwhelming to take in for a first outing, they instead had Simon as the only spellslinger in the group, giving him a unique role. Then, Doric's Wild Shape uses were uncapped so she could just endlessly chain them together, but Druids seemingly don't spellcast, so she's also got her own niche without treading on anyone else's toes. Then Holga is the only one of the four who's actually reliable in a straight-up brawl, so she has HER niche, and Edgin is the moral support plus party 'face' or general negotiator/mouthpiece. I love it because they made it so there was minimal overlap between the party member's skillsets. In a sequel, sure we could have Doric doing some druid-style magic, maybe manipulating plantlife or the elements, and Simon could dabble in metamagic which could come across as him trying to control the Wild Magic, and maybe Edgin even gets a couple Bard magic abilities, OR since the Harpers seem like a pseudo-Paladin oath, maybe he dabbles a little bit as a Paladin/Bard multiclass, taking fighting lessons from Holga while she takes 'talking lessons' from him?

Yeh it was SO DAM WELL executed for their first mainstream try and a D&D movie. The creators clearly knew what it was! But it is not JUST that it is a good movie beyond D&D. Like the marliman and holga interaction before even watching it i said to myself "I hope for once that i see a wholesome adult interaction be it a breakup or closure or whatever" And after the initial joke about their disproportionate taste in partners IT IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENS! I have never seen that before!

I'm so glad you guys enjoyed the movie! As someone who has been playing D&D and other tabletop games for over 25 years, I was happy to see how well they captured the feeling of your average D&D campaign. So to answer some of your questions about the movie: 1. When you play D&D the dungeon master sets up the scenarios and stories and where to set the adventure. You could make up something of your own, or you can use one of the dozens of campaign settings created over the years. The setting they used for this film is called the Forgotten Realms, a setting created by a man named Ed Greenwood. In the latest Edition of D&D it is the default setting for the game. It has been used in several video games and over 300 novels since the 1980's. 2. Doric is what is called a "Tiefling". They are actually a race of people that are born to human families who may have had past relations with a devil from the infernal planes. As such they are most often looked at with distrust. Thus she mentioned her parents "didn't want a Tiefling child" and abandoned her, she was taken in by Elves, though. A Tiefling's Infernal heritage doesn't influence their personality and make them evil, and it isn't their fault, but they will forever bear the physical features that showcase that heritage. In Doric's case, horns and a tail, and some others also have red or purple-ish skin, hooved feet, etc. 3. They took some liberties with rules and lore to tell the story. The thing about a Red Wizard's blade isn't really something from the game, but it does make it so that death can have the proper weight in this film, despite the existence of resurrection and healing magic in the world. 4. They used so many monsters and locations from the game, it was amazing, I highly recommend watching this video from the official D&D channel if you want to know specifics :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JGIdeBc4Uyw.html 5. And finally, if you are curious at all about how they game itself is played I HIGHLY recommend watching this video from Mark Hulmes (probably the best I have seen on the subject): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0TsicWGho7c.html

They’re not afraid of deep cuts either, like Themberclaud (did I spell that right?), who was a 2nd Edition figure that’s a little more obscure at least compared to others… More importantly you don’t need to know anything really precise about the lore, just the bare essentials of how it all works, and the references are enough without being alienating; you get as much information as you need. Apparently Xenk was conceived as being a certain famous drow adventurer, but because they couldn’t get the rights to him they created a new character. Which I love not only because it let him be whatever the plot needed (and was tied into Thay giving him relevance to the conflict), but more importantly it makes the world larger; there’s definitely a lot more famous heroes than just the one, doing their own good deeds and affecting the world (in this case being a righteous knight errant type).

I'm not actually sure if there's anything in the game lore about 'Red Wizard's blades' preventing someone from being resurrected. There are ways to prevent resurrection, though, magical and otherwise, so even if it's not in the lore/rules, it made sense and made for a great story. Edit: As for the bridge, it's likely just a reference to how often a DM will come up with some elaborate puzzle only to have the players bypass it or otherwise not be able to solve it - so there has to be some improv on the DM's part(thus the staff). I loved your reactions, and how much you seemed to enjoy the film without knowing all the references. 😄

the game is very much an improv acting game, which is like the movie can have a serious story but inevitably results in hilarious moments, though the rules might look intimidatingly large unless your the host you really only need to know a handfull of them based on the kind of character you want to be, its a nice game for family time away from screens.

Thumb Up #226! 👍 You're welcome! Thanks! 😊 Notes: I think that it is so cute how you have a different head covering on your statue cat each time! 😎 Hey, that weapon above the dragon behind Storm, I know that it has been there before now. But this time, the silhouette looked a Pacific Blue Whale to me! 🐋 I'm very glad that you love the movie too! If I recall right, Hugh Grant's first foray into the Fantasy Genre is "Lair of the White Wyrm" or something like that. 🤔 In it, he's the hero type. He was quite young then, too. It seems like Michelle's movie characters always die! This one did, too. But she was magically revived this time! So she also got to survive it! Chris, he is also in another Fantasy Genre movie, but I missed it. It came out after 2009's "Star Trek". 🌟 I played a more primitive version of the game, but it wasn't the original 1970s edition, though. More likely, early 1980s. The "Advanced Dungeons and Dragons" stuff was just coming out when I was playing. One of my college dormitory roommates was my last "Dungeon Master". My first one was at the vo-tech that I attended. We played during the lunch hour. We used to wonder what a computerized version of the game would be like, and by the time they finally made some, I was no longer in contact with those friends.

Word of advice: don't ever look at The Big Bang Theory for examples of how games, etc. work. That's a show that thinks "I found my old Nintendo" is a huge punchline worthy of a laugh track 🙄 But yes, D&D is incredibly fun 😁 If you've ever seen Whose Line Is It Anyway, I often describe D&D as "Whose Line, but the only game is Scenes From The Dice" 🙂 It's basically just an improv storytelling game, where you can't win, but you spend the game having fun and trying not to die.

Hmm helped write it bit mmm k. The first dnd edition was a 17 page pamphlet. 6 wierd dice and 6 races and classes. Now 5th edition 35 classes and a ton of marketing shit. I played a chris pune character all the time cause bard. Me and i love music. Was an opera singer with Seattle opera1985 to 1997. Met my wife in seattle symphony moonlighting cuase a 16 hr day as a bartende singer andn pra tice of course fo it again the next daynos such easy work... re inventing to a chef a baker and an accountant well thats a challenge. But writing the ruins of dyriani i changed at least 8 childrens lives and when 12 dungeon masters played my game and 75 players played that game. And 29 years later my nephews remembered every detail of that game. Was a good day. . . I knew Gary he got the money i got recognition. Im ok with that. A druid cant change 5 times unless your 16th level and teflings didnt exsist. Bur dork was cool. And the movie was funny as hell. Loved it. Just when i play im 2nd edition you know role play thaco dungeon master make the rule cause the books suck. They do. Look up fire ball. Literally. Seriouslly literally. . . A flaming ball that travels from the mages fingers and expands on a 30 foot radius. No explosions no bleas radius no friendly fire. So fat dragon was funny as hell to me. Bte penny arcade jasonnhulka lives 3 blocks from me knows me and my best friend. Ge makes him beer i make him curry and bread. . Watch aqusitions incorpurated pax or vox machina or anything patric rothfus. A exelent writer and sonetines funny
