Hands down my favorite of the Moore films. The more grounded and serious approach was a much needed change of pace after the ridiculousness of Moonraker. John Glen is also my favorite Bond director. I like how his films had more of a realistic tone and vibe.
I watched this twice recently. Apart from the Bibi storyline and the awful pre-title sequence this is a really good Bond film. I was surprised as the films before and after it are very cheesy.
@@AaronStark1993 The Spy Who Loved Me is my favourite Bond film. Octopussy is my second favourite Moore. The Man With The Golden Gun is my least favourite classic era film. Moonraker is underrated.
"For Your Eyes Only" holds a special place in my heart, because it came out when I was 8, so it's the first Bond film I was aware of as it was being released.
I was 8 years old and this was my first Bond movie. It was the turning point for Bond films and I personally think this is one of the best. It goes all in on the action and the stunts and keeps a strong narrative. Not a dull moment.
A massively underappreciated Bond movie for me, and my personal favourite of Moore's Bond movies. The tone, action and Roger's more serious take on the character (while still keeping his level of charm and humour) made this perfect for me. I even love the soundtrack to this day, despite it being dated and somewhat cheesy. It also has a personal attachment, as only a year after it was released I went on a family holiday to Corfu, visiting just about every location in the movie including driving down the exact winding road they took through the olive groves, Achilleion Palace where they filmed the restaurant scenes, St. Georges Beach where they filmed the beach buggy scenes, and of course Corfu Town itself. The film captures how Corfu was back in the early 80's before massive tourism took hold, so it's a wonderful piece of nostalgia for me.
This is my absolute favourite Roger Moore Bond film and the closest he has ever come to Fleming's character. I love how they perfectly recreated various scenes from the two Fleming short stories For Your Eyes Only and Risico and included that one very tense scene from the novel Live and Let Die. Also, Roger Moore kicking the car off the edge of the cliff. Moore's most badass moment in the series. This was possibly Lyrith's best reaction to a Bond film so far. she seemed to be totally gripped by the action sequences. I'm really looking forward to finding out what she thinks of Octopussy.
@@DutchBondFan I'm actually surprised. Of all the actors to play Bond, I never would have guessed that it would have been Roger Moore she seemed to gravitate toward the most. I'm thrilled. I love Roger Moore. Pretty sure she's going to like Octopussy. It's a best of both worlds Bond. It still has that tense thriller style of FYEO but also has some of the more outlandish elements of Moonraker. Looking forward to your next Indiana Jones reaction too. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. have a good one.
Because I am from Greece 🇬🇷, the car chase is not shooting in Spain, it is shooting in Greece and specifically in Corfu. I hope so the new movie (bond 26) come back in Greece again.
I watched this film for your eyes only last year as it was the 40th anniversary of the film, John Glen as director for his first film great job. Roger Moore once again at his top a game, especially when he did the cold blooded kick for his 5th outing as bond. Great bond film and perfect bond film to start the 1980's. One last plus, Bill conti's music in this is amazing as John Barry recommended him to cubbi broccoli. Again great video, and great bond film. P.s Julian glover as a bond villien who stared along side Roger in the Saint back into the 60's and were good friends, also a big plus.
18:14 this is sadly true, 23 year old stuntman Paolo Rigoni died on the bobsled track while filming this due to it being not very well designed, a few years before a racer also died in the exact same spot. If I remember right Paolo gets mentioned in the credits about his passing.
I'll be honest, if Lyrith kept that 3 score for enjoyment, I would have protested 😂 I love FYEO, this is my 3rd favorite Bond film of all time. Oh that ice sledding scene someone did die when that scene was being filmed. Great video as usual Jeroen and Lyrith.
My rating upon seeing FYEO for the first time was similar to Lyrith's, but subsequent viewings have shot the film high up the list. It's quite an adjustment after Moonraker, but it has become my favorite Moore film.
Was Carole Bouquet the last time a main character was dubbed in the Bond films?! TBH I don’t know why they dubbed her! If you look at the deleted scene with her and Moore, her English is not only understandable, but her voice really fits the character
Really looking forward to her Octopussy reaction but this is definitely one of Moore’s best bond performances. This one always hold a special place because of just how badass the music is and Bond is awesome. Classic James Bond here
I honestly believe this film would have been better if it marked Dalton's debut. The film's edge would have been more pronounced. With Moore in the role, he gives a good performance but it's apparent that he was already getting long in the tooth. Of course there is also the problem of the banal villain and Jaws 2.0 .
According to Moore's autobiography, he was always going to do this movie but Eon did look at other actors to force his salary down [Moore was worried his agent would price him out of the part]. Apparently Dalton wasn't interested in being considered at this time for Bond [which is why James Brolin was the 'back up' for Octopussy rather than him].
Lyrith's reactions were fantastic. Another enjoyable video. The film occasionally gets negative reviews as being forgettable. I've never understood that. Sure Kristatos isn't the most exciting villain but the film makes brilliant use of the Fleming short stories and it's got quite diverse action. FYEO is Top 5 for me. I'm looking forward to Lyrith's reactions to Octopussy. It was the first one I saw in the cinema so there's nostalgia there.
That's what real crooks actually look like, they don't want to repopulate the planet or build underwater civilizations (as Moore himself stated) but rather make a quick buck by some devious scheme. That's why I like FYEO, all the characters are more believable and realistic and the story is grounded and intriguing.
Roger Moore is my favourite Bond. And this goes to show it. Moore is usually regarded as the funny Bond. But when need be he can turn it up a few notches. For your Eyes only is a great example of this. And of course this movie is the meat in the sandwich between Moonraker & Octopussy the tongue in cheek ones. As always keep up the good work.
A stuntman was seriously hurt on the bobsled track. An actual bobsledder was killed during a competition on the exact same turn, so they ended up fixing the turn and making it less dangerous.
For Your eyes only. Easily one my personal favorites in the series. Top 5. Melina is also one of my personal Bond girls, love her. Saw Octopussy yesterday, hope you'll prepare Lyrith for a certain dumb moment in that film. Pretty sure you know what I'm talking about.
@@tobyhart8515 So many to choose from! Bond in ape suit. Bond in a clown suit. Bond gets attacked by an obviously stuffed tiger. A clown breaks into the embassy. The in and out bit. Bond in a crocodile boat. All of the Vijay scenes (he can't act). p.s. The Kremlin briefing is actually one of the coolest bits of the film.
@@thursoberwick1948 I think Bond in a clown suit, odd as it sounds, was done pretty well actually. Suspenseful scene and certainly not a dumb moment IMO. But I also don't mind Vijay's scenes and thought Bond in the crocodile boat was fun. I think it's a fun and entertaining film, classic Moore.
@@MrFacePeck I enjoyed those as a child, not so much now. There are some better elements, like the yo-yo killers (although how would you catch one), and the knife throwers. The Soviet generals are also well portrayed.
Quick note, Bill Conti not only composed the score for the Rocky Movies (Except Rocky IV), he also did the soundtrack for the Karate Kid movies, and The Thomas Crown Affair remake, which stars Pierce Brosnan.
Glad you mentioned the score. That rich menacing orchestral chorus in the underwater scene is one of the best renditions of the Bond theme in the series. Conti is a fantastic composer. His work on The Karate Kid is seminal, and I really like his theme for the original Dynasty TV series too.
Hello from Greece! Great video.About the locations, they didn't go to Spain at all. The village with the Spanish name "San Martin" and the villa, were all in Greece, in the island of Corfu.
She is right. The cliff climbing scene and the keelhauling scene are the most tense scenes of any Bond film, besides maybe the fight on the train in From Russia and several scenes in Casino Royale.
Omg it’s still here 4th time lucky 🍀 as I was saying the helicopter opening was filmed in the same location as full metal jacket and a episode of dr who over from the river where the 02 was built
I had my mind blown when "S.I.G." magazine did an interview with Derek Meddings and it was revealed how the helicopter scene contained some MINIATURE work I never guessed after seeing it in theatres 3 times. They used a REAL helicopter... but, the shot of it flying INTO the warehouse... the building was a MINIATURE, in the extreme foreground, with the camera having them BOTH in focus, so you couldn't tell. The interior shots, of course, were done with the copter on a track. Meddings is NEVER better than when you honestly DON'T even realize he's involved! The crazy thing is... in the 1972 film "SHAFT'S BIG SCORE", they actually did fly a real helicopter INSIDE a warehouse, FOR REAL. And that was 9 years before this.
This is one of my favorite James Bond films and I rewatch this yesterday and I love the action and it’s one of my personal favorite of Roger Moore tenure as James Bond and I love watching your videos and seeing your reactions to all of the Bond Movies and I have been a fan of your channel since 2019
Jeroen because FYEO went back to the series roots which was something a 5th Brosnan flim would have done, which outlandish Bond flim do you think is better and why. Die Another Day or Moonraker?
Moonraker by a landslide. I reviewed all Bond films in depth in my Recapping 007 series, you can see my reasoning more in depth there. But short version, Moonraker has a lot of charm, Die Another Day I find watchable up untill Iceland, but then it just falls apart...
@@DutchBondFan DAD makes Moonraker look plausible- apart from the Jsws subplot. Moonraker has becine more relevant in these days when billionaires are starting to go off world- billionaires who do not have the masses' best interests at heart.
Great reaction guys! This is one of the best Moore Bonds in my opinion. It needed a more realistic plot and villains after the last two movies. Also,no spoilers, but it’s interesting that you watched this one before the third Indy movie as you will recognise a certain actor playing a similar role there…
Enjoy seeing Lyrith react viscerally to some scenes, but I doubt she would have been that vocal in the theater. Nor would any of us, I imagine. She really seems to enjoy the films, and your rating scheme is a unique addition to a reaction channel.
Funny you should say that, I was in the theatre with her this week, and she became quite vocal in some parts, had to quiet her down. Luckily there were barely any other people 😂 - Guess she's getting to used to this movie reaction thing!
Interesting, Eon said they wouldn't use Risico as the title for Bond 22 [which became Quantum of Solace] as the story was adapted for use in this film. Presumably the same thing stands for Property of a Lady [used in Octopussy] yet both titles are commonly used by press and fans speculating about Bond projects.
For Your Eyes Only! There’s one first thing to say about the film and it’s in the titles! It’s the first time we see the singer of the title song Sheena Easton actually in the main titles! Interesting trivia, this is where we start to see the Julienne stunt family in action! The car chasing the Citroen 2CV is driven by one Julienne sons, Michel Julienne! In Q’s lab, I like the keypad with the sounds of the title theme! That’s cool! Cassandra Harris who plays the Countess was, at that time, married to Pierce Brosnan who later play James Bond himself!. Unfortunately she died of cancer! Something to note about Julia Glover who is in fact a very good actor, but he tended to play the same kind of role! A treacherous character who seems on the good side at the beginning but then seems to turn to the bad side but in fact, is the villain from the start! Another example this is his role in Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade in which, another Bond is present, Sean Connery, of coure! When Bond kills Locque by kicking his car over the cliff, Roger Moore was very unhappy with the situation! It’s well known that Moore has always hated violence even if he had to use it in various films such as The Wild Geese for instance! In this case, however, he felt bad about it mainly because of the way it was to be done! In the end, director John Glen managed to persuade him and it worked to perfection! Lynn Holly Johnson who plays Bibi Dahl was in fact a real figure ice-skater and she took up acting in the late 70s and even got a glden Globe nomination for her role in Ice Castles! It’s also interesting to note that Roger Moore and Carole Bouquet were both involved with UNICEF at different moments of their lives but not at the same time! The underwater close-up scenes with Carole Bouquet were shot in studio with false bubbles because she had sinus troubles and couldn’t dive! Once again, it was Rick Sylvester standing in for Roger Moore in the rock climbing and falling stunt near the end of the film! Remember in the pre-credit sequence of The Spy Who Loved Me, he performed the jump with the Union Jack parachute! And again, at the end, Bond ends up, with the girl on a boat! Good movie but not the best Bond by far and not even the best Roger Moore Bond! He did better before this and even after! But then again, that’s only my opinion!
Nice correction of your GF on the Chief of Staff vs M. Only committed Bond Pedants such as us would need to note that distinction. :) PS For Your Eyes Only is among my Top 3 Bond films of all time. A singularly superb film.
Hey Dutch. What nationality is Lyrith, like her ancestry as she looks like she's got some kind of islander in her background!! She's a lovely girl, put a ring on it 😁🍸💍
Her grandparents are from the Maluku islands (or Moluccas), a part of Indonesia. Due to our colonial history, lots of Indonesians live in The Netherlands and the ones coming from these islands identify seperately as Moluccan people. She is truly lovely, thanks man 😁
@@DutchBondFan oh wow, I never knew that history of migration from Indonesian parts to the Netherlands. You learn something new every day. Thanks mate and I'm glad you found her, you're two fun pees in a pod 😁😁 I'll be looking forward to her Octopussy reaction and I think Lyrith will love Octopussy, especially the fun pre title sequence. Stay well - Krazy Kajeevie 😁🍸
I saw "SPY" in theatres 3 times. I saw "MOONRAKER" once. ("Once!") I saw "FYEO" 3 times. That should tell you a lot! After completely ignoring Ian Fleming for the entirety of the 1970s (beginning with "DIAMONDS"), 'FYEO" was like a "love letter" to Fleming. This film adapts both short stories (which started life as ideas for a TV series that was never made) "For Your Eyes Only", and more significantly, "Risico". The one confusing point in the film, the first time I saw it, was when Bond woke up on Columbo's boat. I read "Risico" in the mid-70s, and had I remembered it more, I would have KNOWN from the beginning that Kristatos was the main villain! This is the only Bond film where the identity of the main villain is a mystery for half the film. Crazy enough, in the 1961 newspaper strip adaptation, artist John McLusky apparently modelled Kristatos on actor Topol, 20 YEARS before Topol wound up playing Columbo! The film also used the climax of "Live And Let Die". The producers said they didn't use it in the 1973 movie, because at the time, they couldn't figure out how to do it without someone getting killed! In addition, the inclusion of the yacht belonging to Melina's parents apparently came from the short story "The Hildebrand Rarity". The Identigraph came from the novel "Goldfinger". I may be forgetting at least one more Fleming reference. That puts Moore's 5th Bond film in the same category as the 5th Universal SHERLOCK HOLMES film with Basil Rathbone, "Spider Woman", in that both are assembled from bits of 6 or 7 different short stories! (Wild, huh?) This is the ONLY film where I genuinely feel like Roger Moore captured the Bond from the novels, and makes me think he COULD have played "the real" Bond, if he'd wanted to, and if he'd gotten scripts in that direction. The crazy thing is, while this has long been my favorite Roger Moore film, each time I watch it lately, I keep wishing Timothy Dalton had done it instead. It was definitely written with a younger actor in mind, and the scene where Moore says, "...you first dig two graves" it just isn't convincing coming from him. Crazy but true: Broccoli was so impressed by the 1980 "FLASH GORDON", he envisioned getting 4 of its actors for this movie: Timothy Dalton as Bond, Ornella Muti as Melina, Max Von Sydow as Kristatos, and Topol as Columbo. He only got Topol. I wish he'd gotten the first 2 as well. But, I DON'T think Sydow would have been as good as Julian Glover was here. He became my 2ND-FAVORITE Bond movie villain... right after Telly Savalas. Check out the Tom Baker-Lalla Ward "DOCTOR WHO" story, "City Of Death", shot on location in Paris. Glover is incredibly good as the baddie in there. I have a personal theory about Blofeld. "DIAMONDS" was all about his creating doubles of himself. I think the guy in the chair was another double, so Bond would know who was killing him. The real Blofeld should have healed by then, and would not be so stupid as to put himself in such danger on a rooftop like that. The real Blofeld was posing as the priest in the cemetery. Note he made the sign of the cross, knowing Bond was about to be murdered! "Blofeld" was dubbed by Robert Rietty, who also dubbed "Emilio Largo" in "THUNDERBALL" and "Tiger Tanaka" in "YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE". This was the 2nd movie of 1981 to feature the acronym "A.T.A.C." The 1st was "NIGHTHAWKS", where it referred to an Anti-Terrorist squad. Bill Conti later did music for the short-lived TV series "THE MASTER". The track "Runaway", for the ski chase, with very slight alterations, became the theme song of that show! Finally... Bibi Dahl is my all-time favorite Bond girl. I can't help it! I would have had a lot of trouble turning her down. I later met someone a lot like her in art school, who, tragically, was already engaged and married the wrong guy (I know, the marriage fell apart after 7 years). In real life, Lynn-Holly Johnson is happily married with kids, and still attractive, though much older. Now, my favorite story: I wasn't there, but a friend of mine told me he went to see this film with a friend of his, nick-named "Crazy Charlie". When Bond told Bibi, "I'll buy you an ice cream", Crazy Charlie allegedly yelled out in the theatre, loud enough for everyone to hear... "OH MAN! HE'S NOT GONNA FUCK HER!!!!" .................Hilarious!
@@thursoberwick1948 If you think about it, you might realize what a RUDE thing that is to say, RIGHT after someone has stated that, as a matter of personal taste, Bibi is their FAVORITE girl in the series. It's almost like someone walking up to a married couple, and saying to this husband, "HOW did you wind up with an UGLY COW like this?" Something funny that took me decades to "connect"... it wasn't just the difference between the Bond of the novels and the "sexual predator" he was in the movies (yes, he WASN'T like that in the books-- I know, I read all of them them in my teen years). It was also the total difference in the attitude & personality of this one character who was my FAVORITE Bond girl in the novels-- "Honeychile Rider"-- and the one Ursual Andress played so differently in the 1962 movie. In the movie, Bond was out to nail anything that moved. In the book, he had his mind on a serious, dangerous job. In the movie, "Honey" kept him at a distance... until the very end. In the book, she liked him right away and wouldn't stop flirting with him, EVEN when they were prisoners in No's headquarters! It's amazing it took me DECADES to notice... in a way, "Bibi"-- my favorite girl in the movies-- reminded me of "Honeychile"-- my favorite girl in the novels! There's no accounting for or predicting personal taste.
After you guys watch Octopussy you have to react to Never Say Never Again. Explain to her the battle of the Bonds and how Octopussy was against stiff competition in the summer of 1983 with films like Return of the Jedi and Connery's Never Say Never Again came out in the Fall with no competition. Moore kicked his ass.
@@greatwuta I watched it again recently. I prefer it to Thunderball (which I found quite dull.) There are a lot of things I like in there, such as the portrayals of Q, Leiter and so on, Brandauer, Carrera etc. I thought it was great fun without getting too much into the camp silliness of some of Moore's films. I forget we're supposed to kneel at the feet of Eon... well I wouldn't even put NSNA in the bottom five. With NSNA, Eon was forced to make a better film with Eyes. Some of the stupidity returned in Octopussy.
@@greatwuta TSWLM and Moonraker are often little more than tourist sightseeing in Egypt and Venice etc. Where's Fekkesh? Pyramids... because that's where locals go, the biggest tourist draw in the area, not a seedy restaurant in central Cairo or a bazaar nearby.
Great movie. Agree the villains are the only weakness. Though I like the big blonde guy as the physical threat villain. The Bond girl is great. I thought the inclusion of the young ice skater was smart. Next to her the heroine seems almost age appropriate.
Moore pulls off a great 'harder and older' Bond performance here. The villains are not that memorable and the end hook up feels forced [Quantum improved on this with the platonic relationship with Camile] but it's a great return to a more serious tone after Moonraker's excesses.
I just wish the film had a stronger villain. Kristatos isn’t awful but compared to Drax and then Kamal Khan, he just doesn’t compare. If this film had a stronger villain it could’ve been Roger Moore’s magnum opus.
I just realized the other day, the 1st & 4th Matt Helm films were directed by the same guy who directed the pilot of "THE UNTOUCHABLES" with Robert Stack! The 4th, "THE WRECKING CREW", is by far the best, and the fight choreographer was Bruce Lee. (What a shame he didn't appear on-camera! But Dean Martin's moves exhibit his work.)
Kind of agree about the Villains being low key & not particularly memorable, Kristatos is more like a villain out of a tv detective drama series. Although on the other hand I feel Julian Glover was convincing as an untrustworthy entrepreneur
My ratings: Bond perfomance: 4/5 a more serious perfomance of Roger Moore. Kicking the car off the cliff is my favorite kill that Roger Moores bond made Bond Girl: 5/5 one of the few with Emotional depth and a character arc. Locations: 3/5 Beatifull locations but not really presented in a memorable way. Bond Villains: 2/5 among the weaker ones in the series Story: 4/5 Serious, realistic and well executed just not very classic Bond Enjoyment: 4/5 Another Solid movie in the franchise
FYEO has a great theme song and beautiful locations, but the rest falls flat for me. It is a bit too serious in the midst of Moore's sillier entries, which makes me wish they saved it for Dalton (though obviously they had no plan at the time for a new Bond).
Roger Moore signed on for 3 films. After "SPY", it's said, every 2 years, he & Broccoli would play a game of negotiations. He'd say he wasn't intersted in coming back, Broccoli would start casting new actors, then they kept agreeing on price and Moore would do another one. They did this 4 times in a row! But ti does seem they were actually planning to get someone younger, though depending on who you ask, Timothy Dalton either WAS... or wasn't... considered. I wish Dalton had done this. I'd love it even more, and the STUPID stuff in the next 2 films might never have made it into the finished films.
Indeed Carole Bouquet isn't the greatest actress of all times, and especially wasn't at this young age. Still I always found her stony face to be fitting the role, she comes off like having put on a literal mask of control and determination in order to deal with tons of sadness, anger and hate.
I liked her in this. She does have stunning eyes, which you see after her parents are murdered. Appropriate for the film title. The crossbow thing is also cool.

Lyrith, Lyrith, sit down. Listen to me very carefully. If I could sum up my feelings right now in one word it would be this: BETRAYAL! ABSOLUTE BETRAYAL!! Here I am gone for a couple of days because of a huge work load, and I come back to see that your reaction to my favorite Moore movie has been up for five days now. So I watch it (sorry I'm late, but you know, blame the work load). BETRAYAL!!!! I warned you what would happen if "Moonraker" ranked higher than "For Your Eyes Only." "Moonraker" cannot possibly compare to the absolute cinematic triumph in the spy genre that is "For Your Eyes Only." "For Your Eyes Only" is so much more exciting, so much more realistic, so much more engaging. Even you had such a good time with it. Yet you ranked it lower. 😮 My heart is hurting, Lyrith. Literally, tears are forming. Lyrith, how could you do this?!?! You said you enjoyed it. You even added an extra star!!! And it still came out lower. Now, with a heavy heart, I must do what I warned. I was always taught that I must always keep my word. I am calling that villaIn hotline that Drax used in "Moonraker." I am hiring Jaws to come after Jeroen. There will be no "detente." Jaws does not know the meaning of "detente." I am sorry it has come to this, but you leave me no choice, Lyrith. Obviously, just joking. I am glad you enjoyed "For Your Eyes Only" as much as you did, and I understand the comments about it being complex on first viewing. But you seriously are the first person I have ever heard to rank it lower than "Moonraker." But still, it is so much fun watching your guys reactions to these films that I just have to forgive you when you get it wrong some times. 🤣😁 (Just don't get Timothy Dalton wrong. There will be no forgiveness there. Jeroen, you had better made sure of that)
Generally im against violence to women but that little blonde cow deserved some Connery treatment. I never cared for the ending of this one. The rest of the novie is really good but it needed a big battle with claret and flying bodies. 007 doesn't even kill the bad guy. Snore.
