I have a lot of back and forth thoughts on this movie. I was trying to find a basis for how Joker became Joker, and there's plenty to find, but I think there comes a point where you have to take responsibility for yourself. To the extent that I can, I understand his character, but he crossed a line. This is definitely a movie I will be rewatching to put more of the pieces together. Enjoy!

I watched it in theaters and I felt very unsettling most of the time, because I'm familiar with mental issues of people I know, and my own anxiety and depression (the 2 bastards always come together)... It's a demonstration of how films can be very powerful, how a movie well-crafted can make you feel and think. One of the best movies I've seen in my life (and I watched some, to say the least)

And most of the negative reviews for it were by people who don't want to hear about this subject. That's the problem with the world. Instead of people wanting to help people with any kind of mental illness they want to label them as "potential" bad people.

It is a very powerful movie. It made me think about individuals and systems and society and my place in the whole mental health...thing. I'm not sure how I would have reacted if I didn't have a little heads up on the mental health side of it. I might have been more "what are you doing" than "you need better help".

He was not referring to the "clown profession" - it was the slang term used to unfairly dismiss a person arbitrarily, as in "This guy is clown, a failure, cannot be taken seriously, a *goof"* - nothing to do with being an actual clown. The only string of pertinence was it was a man in a clown's mask that committed this triple murder, so by extension, he tied in the slanted jab of people which partake in these types of heinous actions, as "clowns". Not your a rodeo clown, or birthday clown - simply a foolish, lowlife labelled with this urban street slang terminology.

As a fifty year old New Yorker, I can testify that this movie captured the mood of NYC in the early 80’s. Crime in the city made today’s Chicago seem tame. Garbage men were did go on strike and it seemed like no one was ever willing to help. I didn’t think it could get worse but then crack came along and proved me wrong. Edit: and the subway shooting of the three guys had to be inspired by Bernard Goetz Except he didn’t shoot business men

21:45 The therapist's job is to facilitate that. Otherwise they wouldn't deserve a salary. That's why the job title is so prestigious, cause it's not easy. If therapists expect their patients to just put it all out there, then so many more people could become therapists, but the job entails more than that, and developing a skill for making patients open up is definitely up there on the list. that's why not anyone can be a therapist.

Umm, as for being "mean to clowns" pertaining to Thomas Wayne's statement - I do not think Mr. Wayne was referring to the actual "clown vocation" itself. It was directly targeting underprivileged citizens by way of the street slang terminology, as in, "this guy is a fool, a *clown,* a failure not be taken seriously". Fairly clear, yes?

The sad thing is, I actually understand a lot of what he went through. I blocked the memories for a long time. I am doing my best now to recover them all. The trauma that is so bad that a child regresses into an atypical mindset. Medication should not have been prescribed. Chemicals are not the way. The murdering only started after the chemical imbalance happen due in part to the medications. What he really needed was to be guided correctly. A therapist that hasn't truly understood trauma isn't acceptable for the job. Parents also can't help, mine didn't understand and mistreated me because of it. The imagery used after he shot the show host is of an Indian. Subliminal message of going "savage". I'm Indigenous, a full blood Navajo, and I found it to be quite offensive. Hollywood has always portrayed my people in an ugly light. It doesn't matter how "good" of an image they make. It's always distorted in some fashion. So the movie shows how Joker became a savage. Batman, the cowboy, is the savior of Gotham. Subtle hints as to how even nowadays, society treats those lesser. An interesting way to put in perspective in a sense. Oh, and you wouldn't like what it's like in his mind... At all. It'll terrify you at just how... how to explain this... How unnerving and discombobulated everything is. If in your mind, logic and reason are solid factors which make up your daily driver... In a mind like his and to an extent mine (in my youth, I consider I was insane), logic and reason are as fluid as the electromagnetic energy encompassing this universe. In other words, even if you were to see inside a mind like that, based on everything you know as sane and true... You'd be hard pressed to find your way out after you just took one step in.

You might find it amusing to know that there is a countdown from 10 to 1 cleverly hidden in the backgrounds of scenes. If you look closely, you can find the numbers as we countdown to him becoming The Joker. Also, all the clocks have the same time, 11:11. There is a lot of stuff going on just beneath the surface in this film. There are you tube videos if you’re interested that go into more detail on these and other Easter eggs hidden in the film.

It's such a difficult movie to watch. His decline and the reinforcement happening all around him encouraging his decline further or bad luck that facilitated even more. It's just a rough story and when I saw the climax in the theater I was legit shocked. So visceral! The audience walked out in a low murmur as everyone seemingly was processing. It's a brilliant but raw movie experience.

I remember the woke people pretty much wanting to burn this movie for romanticizing either white privilege, male privilege, or incels or all three. Nuanced analysis of mental health, society, the healthcare system doesn't matter to them. I would like to believe those people are the minority but are very hard to miss on social media. Also there is no amount of help he could get both in his universe and ours that will result in him becoming a stable adult. The best case scenario in his world is a lobotomy, in ours...pills which are sedatives and a nicer way to get a similar result. It's a runaway train of horrible shit he had no control nor aware that those things existed.

So anyways this is some of the films that are similar in tone : There will be Blood, American Psycho, Taxi Driver (Which has a lot of similarities with Joker), Nightcrawler, A King of Comedy (Which also has tons of similaries with Joker), Pickpocket, Raging Bull (which also has De Niro), Naked, Bad Lieutenent, Shame, First Reformed, The Gambler, I stand Alone, Clean Shaven, You were never really here (Which also has Joaquin Phoenix in it), Drive, The Master, Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer (A vert disturbing film so be prepared), The Machinist, Crazy Heart, Bronson and The Golden Glove (Also a very disturbing film, it's based on true story of a real life German serial killer Fritz Honka). Many great scenes and moments but one I like is the way the movie built up and made everyone panic who reacted to this when he dropped his gun in a children's hospital was just great film making. They could have made it so cheesy or not believable but I don't care who you were, you had a moment of panic during that scene.. and that wasn't because he dropped it which seems like an easy get... but it was because the film makers had you on edge with his character and understood him just being there was scary to begin with so adding the children's music with the moment just doubled down on everything.

Somebody started to say Joker was very similar to Taxi Driver but, apart from its similarities, Joker has more in common with something like One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest than Taxi Driver... although Joker it's very unique in trying to show what happens if mental illness, isolation and society indifference results in criminal behaviour. The motivations of Arthur and Travis Bickle are quite different, Travis mental issues comes from PTSD, he's kind of isolated but not completely, he tries to be normal according to society rules, but he doesn't hate people, he's a guy needed of attention. Arthur/Joker situation is much worse, and as a result he hates society, he cross the line of his own indifference by starting to kill people and not caring about. McMurphy, the guy from One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, he's not having any mental illness, but he's a witness of the cruelty and indifference of public institutions, and that's the key of it, it's the same main theme in Joker... Taxi Driver is more psychological than those 2 other movies

My brain builds up resistance to the meds and I have to go off of them for a while, but I try to cycle through them so that I still have the other three working during those times. This movie was like a love letter. It was like being seen. The system in Gotham is a mockery of our real health-care systems. There is no reason he should have ever "opened up" to that system. There actually are people who are not responsible for their actions due to madness. That's why the insanity defense is a legal defense. Research Eddie Gein. Research paranoid schizophrenia. As uncomfortable a thought as it is, some people are missiles, destined to launch and explode. The fact that you spent most of your time commenting on the theoretical character of Joker rather than the nature of the film demonstrates how good this film was.
