"Superman comes back to life in the middle of this move, and it doesn't mean anything". Well, his death didn't mean anything, so at least there is symmetry ;)
For me, Man of Steel and Wonder Woman are the best films of the DCEU. Suicide Squad is the worst, with BvS coming in second to last, and Justice League is, average.
I like that the DCEU is basically the perfect "What not to do" film series for film studies course: Man of Steel - How to be a horrible writer BvS - How to be a horrible director Suicide Squad - How to be a horrible editor Justice League (apparently) - How to be a horrible cinematographer Wonder Woman - How to be an actually good filmmaker
Blake F I know right? They're up there with the Star Wars prequels as so mishandled in their every slightest aspect that they're actually invaluable as film study tools.
EXACTLY. I wrote like a 2,000+ word essay on everything MoS did wrong and the sheer research I did basically gave me a semester's worth of information on storytelling, Superman, DC comics and just basic filmmaking.
I'm pretty sure the lesson in Suicide Squad and Justice League is mainly, "How to damn your movie to production hell." And BvS is, "How not to movie. Just, in general." And the lesson in Wonder Woman is "Maybe the boys should take a break and let the girls try."
Well as bob said, the cinematography was done with a specific look in mind. This is more a prime example of what happens when you try to 'fix it in post'.
As an analogy, BvS tried to swing for the fences and missed the ball so spectacularly that they flung the bat up into the lights, causing them to crash down on the audience and set half the stadium on fire. So their plan to avoid the same fiasco with Justice League was just bunt and go to first base.
I can't get over how atrocious Cyborg's and Flash's costumes are. They look like they came out of those awful Transformers movies. Just random scraps of metal having a lame orgy. Yuck.
We dare to hope that he could make the lighting strike again and bring life and soul to this rot, bloated and stich together corpse but I guess even the real viktor frankenstein couldn't have save it
For me, the most upsetting thing about this whole enterprise so far is that it'll never be undone. It'll continue to exist, forever lingering in the back of people's minds when people talk about DC Comics or DC heroes. No matter what, we will forever live in a world where Man of Steel took all the fun out of Superman, Batman v. Superman existed, and the Justice League movie was a soulless husk. This was their one chance to bring the DC heroes back into the limelight, to make a Justice League movie that could bring the same feeling of joy as the first Avengers movie did. And they wasted it. Now it'll never happen. That breaks my heart more than anything. Because I love superheroes, and it makes me genuinely sad to think that Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Flash - characters and cultural icons that have brought hope and joy to countless generations - will probably only be remembered by their horrible movies. They didn't have to try to be Marvel. They didn't have to "compete" with the Avengers. They just needed to make good movies, movies that stood on their own, movies that made people love Batman, Superman, and all the others. And they couldn't even do that.
They really didn't Avengers was an OKAY movie very good the first time around second more cirtical watch through it was okay and had its moments but it was not and is not the end all be all of movies.
I'm not talking about the Avengers in and of itself. You're absolutely right - it's not the second coming of Christ in movie form. But you'd never be able to tell that from the amount of praise it was getting, the way everyone was talking about it, the way that the popular culture exploded with jokes, memes, and images from the movie. The cultural impact we got from The Avengers was game-changing, and I would have loved something similar from Justice League (who are arguably more important from a cultural standpoint, IMHO) to capture that magic all over again. But that didn't happen, and it probably never will.
@@wills1185 Avengers was one of the most seminal movies of the genre. It did a LOT of firsts and broke a lot of new ground for all CBM in general. Subjectively you may not like it, and that;'s fine, but it's a historic movie in all aspects. WB and DC were definitely playing catchup, and that's painfully obvious.
BVS was a brilliant movie true to Superman...and JL was great....Bob is a negative hack that is riding the wave of the 'its cool to be negative' bandwagon
It's almost amazing watching DCEU fans defend this movie despite it being bad in all the same ways they hate MCU movies for. You know, boring villain, too focused on being 'fun' & 'funny', sequel set up. All the stuff that DCEU fans insist has turned critics 'bias' in favor of the 'clearly inferior' MCU movies is now present in their big crossover movie. And they love it. The hypocrisy is laughable, to be honest.
actually, in this film, a lot of the progressive feel of that film is reversed, and every male character comments on her looks in some way. Every. Single. One.
And to make matters worse, since Brett Ratner is apparently a scumbag, Gadot is threatening to walk away from the WW sequel unless he's taken off production. I hope WB isn't stupid enough to let let the only redeeming factor of this project leave and cost them tons of money.
I like that bob's reviews offer a bit of analysis, rather than just getting swept up in the marketing hype machine. I guess I'll pass on this one. But maybe warner bros can reconfigure their approach for the cyborg movie.
I saw it last night, I really enjoyed the character interactions, but wish there were more. All the Snyder scenes stick out like a sore thumb, compared to the extensive and I mean extensive reshoots. Pretty much every scene with the characters talking is Whedon, or contain added shots directed by him. This was the first DC movie I walked out of wanting to see more of each of the characters, so at least there is that.
I just want a Harley & Ivy movie. Eva Green or Emily Blunt for Ivy. A nice 'pseudo buddy-cop' anti-hero movie. Ivy dealing with her alterations that give her the ability to control people and focussed through her nihilistic worldview, and Harley being a sweet counter that gives Ivy a reason to care for at least one person. DC, give me that. Give me that and I will see any other shit you make. I'll (kinda) forgive you for fucking up Superman, the greatest hero ever made.
You're sort of going to get that with Gotham Sirens. In the grand tradition of "Corrupt a Wish" though, WB decided the best person to make that movie was David Ayer, the guy behind Suicide Squad.
Yeah, the thing is that I'm not a huge Catwoman fan. I was excited to hear about a Sirens movie for all of two seconds before I read Ayer's name attached. I mean, COME ON!
A Legion of Doom in the DCEU?! How?!All of the villains we’ve seen so far in this franchise have been godawful! Is anyone really excited to see their versions of Luthor, Joker and whoever the hell that was in SS team up?
ARMJJB NOBODY!!! I said it before and I will say it again, Jared Leto's Joker is by far the worst Joker ever made. I wouldn't even call him The Joker, I would call him a ridiculous looking, hot topic, tattooed pimp who happens to be a Joker-fanboy. He wasn't frightening or funny, he was just silly. I mean "Hunka! Hunka!" Really!? It was so cringe-worthy to watch! Even Cesar Romero, an actor who refused to shave his mustache, played a better Joker than Jared Leto did.
Well, Luthor and Joker are so bad that they would make perfect punching bags for Edgyberserkerman, Charismatic AF Woman and the other guys. So why not?
Whilst I'm not a fan of the DCEU's versions of Joker or Lex, I am very interested to see some attempt at the Legion. I feel seeing a bunch of lesser villains play of each other and form a plan that makes the most of their various powers and quirks could be a nice change from just making the BigBad a bigger scarier thug than last time.
Well, what about the fact that many MCU fans are clamoring for Masters of Evil (Marvels' Legion of Doom) to appear in the MCU? But how could it appear if its founder, The Mandarin, was portrayed as a narcoleptic old man with silly accent in the MCU? Well, the logical answer is, they can try to retconn some of the bullshit they've made and make it better.
I can't wait to hate-watch this. Perhaps with a bottle of watered down Chivas and a bag of Chee-tos while rubbing Halls Mentho Lyptus cream in my nose so all my senses are equally as offended.
Just when you thought Warner Bros. finally got their shit together, they drop the ball once again. Guess we'll be expecting more 'Harry Potter', and 'Lego' movies than more DC movies. And I am NOT planning to see the 'Teen Titans Go' movie!
I think they finally got their shit together. But JL was already too far away to get cancelled. The best outcome was an ok fun moment: which to many people, it was.
The Master Grief Collection so far so good IMO. The action situations are pretty different from each other, which is original, and they are well done. The characters are good, Punisher's story goes very good. Maybe the only problem i found (until now, i am like 60%), is that maybe is unnecessarily long, so sometimes there is too much talking about something thats not a big deal. But character relations are very well done IMO. I'd watch it: at least it fullfills Snyder's promise: a darker, serious and more realistic approach to the genre.
I liked it because Superman was smiling and his suit was in color and Batman wasn't psychotically murdering people and was glad to see these characters share the big screen even if it wasn't spectacular... then I thought later, "if 'at least they're not derailed into total unrecognizability' is the best I can say about it, that really does mean it sucks." It's kinda like the video is saying. It doesn't do as much to make you want to put your fist through the screen as BVS did... but that's because it's not doing much at all.
*SPOILERS* (even though it was already obvious) So wait, they use a Mother Box to bring him back to life? Then what the hell was happening with his casket at the end of BvS? ...also Mother Boxes don't do that. They are not Infinity Gems or something. But who the hell even cares anymore at this point.
Painocus Thank you! Motherboxes are basically just, sci-fi supercomputers that can also serve as teleporters, but for some reason in the DCEU they literally are nothing but deus ex machina machines
The key thing with this movie is that it's a sequel to a version of BvS that's not the one that got made. It's the sequel to a movie where Superman was a universal symbol of hope, rather than a deeply divisive figure, where the crucial Diana-checks-her-email scene (aka we-interrupt-this-movie-to-bring-you-a-Justice-League-trailer) either didn't include footage of Cyborg at all, or at least didn't include the mother box rebuilding him well before the mother box became active with Superman's death, and, as observed, Superman actually died for reals, rather than being shown to be only mostly dead... +Token Minority Mother Boxes in the comics also get pretty deus ex mechanical - when Superman went up against Doomsday the second time, he had a friendly MB along which transformed into a suit of hi-tech armour and healed his wounds...
rmsgrey: Mother Boxes always have had healing abilities, but it has always been mild and it's not flat-out "whatever we want" magic. Basically Mother Boxes has mild abilities to manipulate molecules, enough to speed up natural healing abilities, fix minor things like scars and modify Orion's facial-structure just enough to make him look less Apokolips-ish (and that last one requires constant upkeep). They can't heal any wound or raise the freaking dead. And Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey isn't really a good indication of how the New Gods mythology usually works anyways, considering how much Dan Jurgens de-powered Darkseid in order to make the story work, he clearly wasn't that considerate of continuity with other comics.
There is only one well put together scene, and it's shot on an iPhone in the opening thirty seconds of the film. You know you fucked up when there's thirty seconds in your film with more going on thematically than the other 99% percent of this beast.
Alex Dilley This little scene, Made the movie so much better. It Made me actually believe that Superman was what everyone in JL is saying he was. And it made me feel sad for him.
When I heard that Critics actually enjoyed Wonder Woman, I nearly cried for joy because not only did a great character whose been dragged through the muck for most of her history finnally get a good live action movie, it also meant that the DCEU might be worth the trouble. Then Justice League comes along to make things hard.
Yeah. Mamoa really is such a big presence and looking at the behind the scenes stuff had so much energy. Disappointing none of that seemed to make it into the film.
So. this is the problem with this guy. NO, HIS WORD IS NOT OBJECTIVE. SPECIALLY COMING FROM THIS GUY, he is not a good example of someone objective, and even less coming to DC movies, which he hates irrationally. (finding ways and poor arguments to hate it, and promote the hatred, just because he didn't got the Type of movie he wanted, and instead GOT CONFUSED THE FIRST TIME HE SAW IT, driving him like a child that rejects his soup.) Analyse, LOOK the Flaws and THe Good, and the decide. (Bob is already a pretty biased man, he is not the voice of reason) You decide if you like the movie or not. (and then analyse if its Good or not)
Maskofshy Giotto - Ahem - * two * opinions. Besides, the last three of these were battered shit and EVERYONE is saying this one is _okay_ at best. Dude, I just don't have the time to care about this movie and will routinely laugh at it and the entire DCEU for being a garbage fire of hilarious failure.
I expected a piece of shit, nothing more. this whole thing has been a mess since man of steel, it's impossible to save something that started so wrong and flawed. they should just let it die and wait five years to reboot it.
Moviebob's ranking of the comic book movies of 2017 1. Logan 2. Thor ragnarok 3. Wonder Woman 4. guardians of the galaxy vol.2 5. spider man homecoming 6. justice league
Mine, not based on much deep thought: 1) Wonder Woman 2) GotG2 and Thor Ragnarok tie 3) Spidey Homecoming and Justice League tie (they're all very approximate and vague though because I like or dislike different things about them all. I think I enjoyed Spidey's villain the best, and I liked the way JL did humour better than Guardians and Ragnarok) (can't rate Logan as I didn't see it)
Mine: -Logan -Wonder Woman All I saw, but they were both good, so to me it was a good year for superheroes. Also judging Lindsay Ellis review, Guardians or the Galaxy vol.2 is actually quite great particularly for these from broken families, that can relate to that topic predominant in the movie.
There was no reason to do that, Steppenwolf looks human in the comics. They paid more money, to go against the source material, and it ended up looking terrible.
I don't see why they can't make a film like this using the comic-book origin story - it's got an alien invasion, the heroes all come out of their individual stomping grounds to stop them before ultimately ending up in the same place and having to use their powers as a team to take the bad guys down, there's a lot you could expand and work with from that cliff-notes version alone.
Kinda curious myself seeing as how my hardcore BvS-loving DC fanboy friend just told me the movie sucked & failed to live up to the "awesomeness" of BvS. (His words not mine)
DCEU apologists form part of a cult that believes themselves as some kind of elite movie experts that only fashion dark, realistic and mature stories (about superheroes). They have a really meticulous and refined way to review movies: if we can contemplate a joke in it; then its "stupid, childish, dumb, opium for the masses, awfully bad scripted directed and acted movie ment for dumb kids who can't enjoy anything good (because they are kids and kids is all we are not)... And critics are paid by Disney" BvS is a Masterpiece because it doesn't have jokes and its different: it doesn't have a theme nor cohesive story, characters are shallow and dumb, the movie concentrates in the hype for future possible movies (that, as it seems, will not happen) instead of telling its own story; the movie also turns on the epic music everytime something aesthetically similar to a famous comic happens, but irrelevant to the story, so it gets confusing ("should this mean something?" Dumb people who never read a comic would ask). Instead of this Masterpiece (enjoyed better in the 3 hours DVD extended cut), DCEU brings us The Justice League. In the trailer, we can see that Flash makes a joke. The cult doesn't forgive.
Critics are paid off by Marvel Wait till the Extended Cut Wait till Flashpoint "Wonder Woman was cool though" You're not smart enough to understand the movie You're supposed to just shut your brain off But Aquaman/Shazam/Man of Steel 2/Justice League 2/Suicide Squad 2/Gotham Sirens/Batgirl/Wonder Woman 2/The Batman/Green Lantern/Cyborg/Deadshot/Justice League Dark/Flash/Flashpoint might still be good It'll make money though Take your pick for what excuse they'll go with, or better yet, make a bingo card out of it!
I'm putting my money on them blaming Whedon for messing up Snyder's "vision" and then proclaiming the eventual director's cut (because you KNOW there is going to be one) is the "proper" film to see.
SPOILER They did it. They actually did the one thing more idiotic than wasting the death of Superman: they brought him back to life. That was literally the only way they could have cheapened his death in the previous movie even more, and they fucking did it. Seriously, what the hell is Warner Brothers even thinking?
cyanmanta i think they don't care anymore about the DCEU, and they just tried a passable goodbye. They were not trying to correct BvS. They were forced to finish this movie already in production, so they can move on. I think they'll try the basics: solo movies.
The end of BVS already had a hint that showed he would be back soon so why you are suprised? It was a waste sure but since Justice League was coming out so soon it was pretty clear it was here he came back.
You know what? I'm not going to see it. Yeah. That's it. I'm not going to see it. There's no reason for me to. It doesn't sound interesting. I'm just not going to see this one. I ask that many people follow my lead, and really consider whether or not this movie is worth your time. I don't think it is for me. So I'm not going to see it. Done.
I made up my mind on that after I walked out of “Batman v Superman” last March. Didn’t see “Suicide Squad”, only saw “Wonder Woman” cause I love the character and was pleased with that film.
"It's an in-field foul *in t-ball*" is probably my favourite insult MovieBob has pulled out. It's the epitome of lukewarm damning-with-the-faintest-possible-praise
So will Justice League lead to a fourth part in Really That Bad where Bob explains how Batman vs Superman made other movies even worse because of how it restricted what they could do with the franchise? I hope so since it would cover the consequences of Batman vs Superman being bad, rather than why just that movie was bad.
It's weird to hear Bob say "not as good as Man of Steel." But I understand where he's coming from, since man of steel was trying to explore a new direction, and this movie apparently isn't taking any risks.
Well, he doesn't "succumb" to the threats and insults of MCU fanboys either. When he said that Homecoming was "fine", MCU fandom went after his ass and started trashing him and his credibility as a critic on RU-vid and on Twitter. And what did he do? He kept mentioning how lame Homecoming was in other videos. Good thing that I never liked him as a critic and could give two shits if our opinions match or don't.
That people complained about him was not because he thought the movie was "okay" more that he complained that Marvel should have continued the Sam Raimi movies and that people thought he had to move on.
Valkyrie77, no. That’s just an excuse used by those people to disqualify Bob’s opinions on the movie. Bob very deliberately said that his problem with Homecoming lies in story and its execution, not his love for the first two Sam Raimi films. The people who did not agree with him begun using “stop dickrding Sam Raimi” card as a way of invalidating Bob’s thoughts on the movie. So no, don’t even try to justify those folks. They act about the same as the people you all making fun of.
Actually a handful of people criticized him and i agreed with him on that too. Spiderman trilogy was oscar worthy. The MCU spiderman cant be compared to that. Just like the DCEU cant be compared to the Dark Knight trilogy
Honestly I think I will just skip this movie, I was hoping this would be good against all odds because I did like Wonder Woman but I was not really expecting this to be any good. (Also can we talk about Aquaman? I feel his fans are even more insecure than Batman fans so they constantly have to make him more manly and cool and no its not talking to fish he is forcing them to fight for him against their wills and now he is Khal Drogo in the movies so stop laughing!)
That's why my favorite version of Aquaman is the one from Batman: The Brave and the Bold. He's cool, but that's a byproduct of how he was written rather than the end goal. Instead the show was focused on making him a fun, boisterous guy who enjoyed being a hero.
Usually I stay away from spoiler reviews until I've seen the film but I knew nothing about this film would shock me. You could call the entire film beat for beat and you'd probably be 95% correct.
I hope this ends the DCEU in it's tracks. This and the the Dark Universe should teach the film industry a lession and one day can lead to compitant DC movies that aren't just a soulless, shitty marketing strategy.
I got off this ride with BvS. I didn't pay to see Suicide Squad, borrowed a friend's blu-ray. I haven't seen Wonder Women, because one "okay" film will not fix this franchise. I have no plans to watch this train wreck any time soon.
camethedawn hey WB were the ones responsible for the mandate on the film, so another 20-30 minutes could've salvaged some of a few plotholes, lore, and development of the villain in an already broken film. WB from the moment they listed a mandate on this film killed any inticement this film had going for it...
warner bros. killed any chance justice league had of being good the second they decided to hire Zack Snyder to helm their movies instead of calling security to escort him off the premises & serving him and his wife with restraining orders. As a DC fan, I'm mad. I don't accept this. I demand better. I think we deserve better.
Okay first off the guy just went through a really horrible personal tragedy so have some decency, he’s not the boogeyman and he’s by no means the only thing that kept the dceu from being any good. Was he a good fit for the source material? No definitely not but how was anybody supposed to know that? when I heard that the guy responsible for watchmen was making a Superman movie I thought it sounded like a dream come true. I actually still think he could make a pretty awesome batman movie if he didn’t have a studio and corporate marketing division breathing down his neck trying to fit it into some kind of large scale continuity. TLDR: Zack Snyder is by no means the only thing to blame for the DCEU going down the drain and I think fans should really cut him some slack.
Justice League is AWESOME 🎶🤗 I had low but hopeful expectations going in and left surprisingly more than satisfied. I generally leave the Avengers/X-Men teamup movies satisfied and happily waiting a couple of years until the next one. I left Justice League extremely satisfied and wanting more as soon as possible- definitely ready for the next one! Snyder’s brilliant direction with Terrio’s amazing writing and Whedon’s awesome contributions made for a sweet blend. 😀😃😄😁
They need to just stop scrap this trash and just hit the reboot button get an entirely new cast to replace the tripe they have at the moment & let DC set up their own film studio with one main visionary at the helm like Marvel so they can make amazing movies with no corporate interference these amazing, treasured characters deserve it and as a fan I want good DC film don't support this shit guys demand better
DBLoCK_ThE_KeyBlade Master DC still has time to pull the plug! They can come back, better than ever, without anything holding them back (looking at YOU Warner Bros) and give the characters of DC the standing ovation it deserves. The DCEU is 5 years into it's Universe, and it's not been getting better since BvS... What I want not a just as a view, but as a fan of some of DC's properties, is to see them done JUSTICE.
Honestly it all started with MoS arguably a very well developed film did nothing for the character of Superman. No development whatsoever. I feel like his parents should have been the humanity that entered his life and really made him feel human instead we get parents who tell him not to save people and that in Martha's words "Save or don't save them you do not owe this world a thing." This statement is true but is not something that should be said at this moment. It makes him dawning the cape almost irrelevant he lets his father die because his father does not want him to reveal his secret. However, in the mind of most people I would care less if people knew my secret identity. I know his father told him not to save him but that is a defining moment are you really a hero valuing life above all or just an individual who doesn't stand well under pressure. Its the starting point for a universe trying to hang itself. Even the actors in these movies aren't happy and its sad. I WANT THESE movies to be good. Marvel is mediocre DC was supposed to raise the stakes but has left us gasping for air and giving it advice. I AM FRUSTRATED BECAUSE I WANT THESE MOVIES to be great. I want them to actually inspire the people who write them and act in them and watch them.
I don't think that Barry was a millennial stereotype, so much as literally autistic. When he meets Bruce he describes why he would be bad on the team, and he essentially just describes autism. Kinda an unconventional take on the character, but I thought it was interesting. I'd be down to see more Worm/The Ables style impaired superheros; it adds some interesting potential for conflict.
For all its faults MOS had a decent amount of loose strings that could be made BVS good if they treated it like an official Superman sequel. I.e. Open pod in starship(Supergirl introduction), Clark in water (Aquaman introduction), the arrival of Clark the reporter to the Daily Planet...I mean I wasn't stoked for BVS but it had alot of good threads to pick up on, unfortunately we got BVS as it was....a response to MOS. Now we got JL a response to BVS....wth....just make a good fucking movie.
BvS was just a bad movie. I went with people who are not into comics at all and everyone...I mean 7/10 that went with me fell asleep in the first 40 minutes...
I don't think you cab blame Jason Mamoa for Aquaman's lack of screen presence. The work he did on Stargate: Atlantis and Conan shows he has charisma. There's a apropos saying, "If it ain't on the page, it ain't on the stage." It's clear no one at WB had any idea how to handle Aquaman.
WB have repeatedly shown that they don't understand WHY their competition is successful... The DCEU is such a top-down, corporate-driven monstrosity, and plotting by box office projections is a stupid way of using such beloved properties - not only are they not selling it to new people, they are driving away the loyal fan base that made them want the properties to begin with. I really want there to be a decent DC film franchise, Marvel has proved it's possible, but the way WB runs things makes me think I'll never see it...
I might buy another ticket for "Thor 3" and sneak into "JL" just out of morbid curiosity. Definitely not giving WB money for this junk though. (I did the same with "BvS" and a ticket to "Deadpool." Lol)
I saw it. I felt absolutely nothing during or after I saw it. It was just soulless. The Avengers felt like a huge culmination and I was grinning throughout the whole thing. Justice League was just..ok. It was fine. And fine isn't good enough. Especially considering the talent involved, the money spent and the IP it's based on
As I look at my 1000 DC comic books sitting in bag and boards, I think I will skip this turd and read me some Comics instead and imagine if they made a good movie.
Yeah, I knew that it was too good to be true. Zack Snyder & Michael Bay are now my most hated directors in Hollywood. They have totally ruined my favorite franchises. Along with the guy who made that awful RoboCop remake.
I hesitated to watch the spoiler section, but when I did I was amused to discover that it contained exactly ONE spoiler, which everyone knew was coming anyway. Thanks, Bob. I am certain I got more entertainment from your review than I would get from the movie, if I ever get around to watching it.
*Spoiler* I feel like the scene where flash and cyborg dig up superman's grave while having awkward conversation sums up the film perfectly: constantly trying to get back to the "Hope" of DC that the movies metaphorically (and literally) killed. Apply that to the rest of the movie and it becomes a 2 hour course correction where everything is a veiled "yeah we messed up." Interesting to watch for sure buuuut that's only if you follow all the DCEU news. Ah well.
jinpei05 not really the RT score leaked and it was 48%. My guess when coco comes out in justice league 2nd weekend it will do some damage to it's box office. Then star wars. It will open big but it won't enjoy the summer wonder woman did.
jinpei05 there are 2 major markets, us and China. Either one can save or tank a movie. I have never read an article that said we would have tanked if not for the French box office. My honest predictions for the box office is 850 to 900 million. Keeping in mind it needs 1.2 billion to break even.
I would personally rank Justice League above Suicide Squad. It's more coherent and at least manages to adhere to the most basic rules of cinematic storytelling. It's not a good movie but it is tolerable and even comes close to being mildly entertaining at times. The main thing to take away is that they more or less fixed Henry Cavill's Superman (his personality, at least) - he was actually the best part of the film for me.
Yeah, finally getting a proper Superman was a major credit for the movie for me, and makes me optimistic about future DCEU movies. The technical and production issues have obvious fixes - don't switch film-maker when you're 90% done; don't insist on the movie being compressed down too far; don't try making radical changes to tone and style mid-production... and so long as they can get the characters right, they're in a much better position for the next movie than making technically sound movies with MoS Superman...
ScreenJunkies, Chris Stuckmann and the other reviewer's say like, "Yeah, the movie had problems but is was FUN!" or "This is a good way for the future DC Movies!"
I haven't seen those, but why shouldn't they be honest? I mean, what tells you that they didn't have fun or that they don't really think this is a good way for the future DC movies?
Saying it’s about the same as Suicide Squad seems apt, since I *swear* the online reaction seems to be about the same across the board as it was for that movie; the people who were forgiving toward Suicide Squad and enjoyed it on a character interaction-fanservice level seem to be the exact same people giving JL a pass. I thought Suicide Squad was a waste of money and an absolute garbage fire, so I’m probably not gonna chance it with this one in theaters.
"So I’m probably not gonna chance it with this one in theatres." Oh........does that mean we're not going to get a review from you then? Or at least, not anytime soon? If so, that's the real disappointment here, not the movie. I was quite looking forward to hearing your thoughts about it. Oh well.
They used a cougar roar as an explosion sound effect. Watch the opening scene with headphones. When Wonder Woman throws the bomb in the air you can hear the roar come from the right side.
Thank you for your honest review. I thought it was just me that thought this movie was a waste of my time and money. I kept hearing other movie review channels say it’s a mess but it’s fun and funny and the characters work well together. Wtf? That’s not a 300 million dollar movie that’s what you say about a improv comedy sketch. Keep up the great work I’m a subscriber now!!
BATMAN V SUPERMAN is the only DCEU film I've seen in theaters. I waited for the home video release for this one. When I first watched it I thought JUSTICE LEAGUE was just "okay," but it's honestly grown on me through subsequent viewings. Like SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE or BATMAN AND ROBIN, it tries and fails so miserably that I almost can't help but admire it. JUSTICE LEAGUE has become a guilty pleasure. I might even say it's my favorite film of the DCEU.
If they want to do movies (and they should with their archive of stories), just do one-offs. No need for heavy continuity - no need to wonder why Green Lantern isn't solving this problem and why Hawk and Dove are doing it instead (for example). Allows for each hero to spotlight, each one to have their own tone/genre/universe, allows you to reuse characters (even if killed or imprisoned in other films). Also allows for multiple different versions of the same character (here's your grimdark fascist Batman, here's your detective Batgod, here's the ensemble adoptive family Bats with Dick and Oracle and Damien, etc). Call it Hypertime/Multiverse/Infinite Earths to explain it if you need to. You're good. They messed up the big cinematic universe, but they don't need to fail forever. Just focus on making good stuff first and foremost. Back to basics.
For example, a few Wildstorm flicks (in their proper setting) would be good - Authority, Stormwatch, WildCATS, Gen-13 (although that would need a slight retool since we're up to Gen 15 now).
I think this is what they are trying now. But since Justice League was too much into production to get cancelled, they tried to make it an acceptable fun flick, while going back to the basics. At least i heard they were going for unconnected (at least at first) solo movies, like Batman.
This is what everyone should be demanding now! Yes, I understand that for the faceless suits it's impossible to see past that idea that a successful shared universe provides more predictable profits, but just imagine if the 'DCEU' now became 'DCEM' 'DC Elseworlds Movies'. A diverse range of characters, each in their own stand-alone films. Not interconnected. They could then do films with a wide range of reimagining and reinterpretations of the characters - just like in the comics.
Yeah none of this is really a surprise. Between the troubled production, the crappy DC films (so... anything that wasn't Wonder Woman), and the not-very-promising trailers, I wasn't expecting much out of Justice League. I stopped watching at the Spoiler section even though I'm 99.9% sure of what the reveal is but I'll go in cold on the off chance the movie actually does something unexpected.
+Caleb Witts All the previous DCEU movies, except Wondie's, may have been awful, but at least they were memmorably awful. I was hoping this one would be, to. Instead, it's just forgettably mediocre.
I just wanted to go on record that I hated the costumes from the moment I saw them. Flash’s armor looks ridiculous (especially after CW realized the spandex costume in such a successful way). Cyborg’s armor likewise just looks kind of bulky and unwieldy (and what the heck isn’t with the glowing red gap in the torso?). Aquaman’s costume . . . Actually, his looks pretty good, but I wish the movie had ignored the New 52 and remembered a trident should only have three prongs (yes, that’s a small complaint, but it’s really annoying). I’ve disliked the Batflek costume since the DAWN OF JUSTICE poster-the whole thing’s kind of an indistinct black mess: the ears are two small, the logo is too indict and looks kind of like a blob (when I can see it, because there’s no contrast on the chest to make the logo stand out from it), and the scalloping on the cape doesn’t look like they really wanted you to be able to notice the it. On the other hand, Winder Woman’s costume is pure awesome. I really like the idea of Greek armor rexcolored and heavily ornamented, and it’s the first time I’ve actually liked Wonder Woman in a skirt (in the comics, it always looks too poofy, like someone’s just pulled the bottoms down to censor the swimsuit, even in the original Golden Age illustrations). I even kind of like the sword and shield; it works with her character and backstory.
The Avengers was sortof a sequel to 5 films; DC just doesn't have the patience to actually build up like that. I kinda wish they'd scrap the current continuity and reboot from...something else. Bat Family, maybe.
Bobby Dee Bat Family still has too much past baggage, especially after BvS. They should've started with Wonder Woman, someone people knew but didn't have any past cinematic expectations to haunt the film. Unfortunately, DC constantly forgets they have superheroes besides Batman and Superman so here we are.
Bobby Dee wrong! Warner Bros doesn't have the patience to build up some of DC's Heroes. I don't think an extended universe was in mind during the production of MoS, but seems WB wanted to capitalize on the Marvel craze that was building up back when Disney brought the company. To me the DCEU was a last minute decision that would eventually fall apart due to WB countless interference and the decision to move forward from MoS to an inevitable franchise...
Remember that the MCU didn't start with a reboot of Spider-Man or the X-Men or even Captain America. It started with Iron Man, a major character in the comics universe but one who had almost no presence in broader pop culture, and then it followed up with a reboot of the Hulk and then Thor, characters who are even less-known (and in Thor's case quite a weird concept). The miracle of Marvel was proving Bob's maxim that "you can make a good movie out of anything" which is how we got Ant-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy and Doctor Strange. While DC couldn't see anywhere to start other than Superman, a character that EVERYONE knows, so they felt they had to mess around with him and subsequently dropped the ball on. If they'd started with Wonder Woman they may have had the opportunity to break fresh ground from the beginning and really make people sit up and take notice.
Overrated, probably. Plot holes? Sure. Why are Hawkeye and Black Widow there? No idea. Yet...they did build up to the Avengers. Iron Man (which introduced Black Widow, Nick Fury, and SHIELD), Captain America, and Thor (which introduced Coulson and Hawkeye) put basically all the pieces on the table. And most importantly...it was fun. They didn't have to do origin stories, they just got into it. At the end of the day, the best Marvel movies can stand on their own, but they also tie into each other in neat ways. Warner Bros/DC didn't put the work in on that, and it shows.
I still contend that while it was risky, they could have pulled it off, if they had given it to somebody with an adult understanding of how serious films are made and not somebody with an EQ lower than that of Beavis and Butthead, who thinks "THIS.IS.SPARTA !" is the very pinnacle of serious drama. With MoS and Clark Kent having an actual personality rather than be carted from one melodramatic vignette to the next, BvS:DoJ being about an actual conflict rather than an exercise akin to putting the actual Venus of Milo in your front yard and think you turned your fifties suburban lowrise into a new center of culture. We could have had a half decent Suicide Squad and Justice League would have gotten three stars in this review.
Not sure what it is, but the DCEU just doesn't interest me in the slightest. I didn't even think Wonder Woman was all that good. Certainly the best of the bunch, but it was so predictable I literally called every plot point within the first 15 minutes. I really cant figure out why nothing about them works for me, Part of me feels like its how WB is adapting the characters themselves. I just don't feel like they fit in today's world. Part of what makes superheroes so timeless is how they are adapted to each new generation, and I feel like every one of the DCEU heroes are just an unholy chimera of popular moments in their history rather being unique and interesting characters on their own.
Movie Bob I LOVE YOU!! So far you are the one RU-vidr I have seen that is not afraid to tell it like it is. I have watched a number of "reviews" with the best being the story was light, the CGI bad, but the characters they got right! Somehow because they actually got the characters right that made it a good movie. I don't always agree with you (spider man homecoming, Wonder Woman) but at least you stay true and just do you.
Who else would've loved in if when Aquaman said "My Man!" He turned into a hologram and the whole thing was revealed to be a simulation run by the Zigerions the whole time and Wonder Woman was the the only real one? Not only would that be funny, but it would be a retcon most people would happily accept.
I know it wasn't a secret to anyone what-so-ever that he was coming back to life, but the movie really wanted to pretend that there was a reveal there, so let's let them have their "secrets" by not showing off Superman within the promotions.
I don't understand how the INJUSTICE inspired future could occur anyway. I figured that was resolved when Superman saved Lois from drowning in DAWN OF JUSTICE. Batman saw the Flash, so really it should have been Batman who saved her, but what's done is done. It would have been stupid to nearly kill Lois in one movie, only to kill her in the next.
*LONG STORY SHORT* A bland unambitious success relative to BvS's spectacular overambitious failure. Can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm interested to see the 3-hour extended cut. It might be more of a train wreck, but at least it sounds interesting relative to what currently sounds like an uninspired compromise cut of a much longer movie.
This is Bob's best review in months. I'm shocked that he's finally learned how to be upset with something without his emoting hitting "tell us how you really feel" levels of hyperbole. I'm surprised I'm saying this, but as someone who came into this video looking to see an over-the-top sperg-a-thon, well done.
Great review. I'm afraid everyone else is just grading on a curve because of how shit BvS was. Just because it isn't that bad does not make it good by comparison.
MobiusCoin well here's an idea, instead of listening to this fatass how about you go see the fucking movie and develop your own fucking opinion of it. It's people like you that seriously piss me off.
People who watch reviews piss you off? Isn't a big part of criticism consumer advocacy? Why should I give my money to a product I'm not sure about? When I go buy a laptop or a phone, I research the specs and watch reviews. Why should I drop money on something I'm not sure about?
My 30 second review: the movie's got a ton of technical flaws, and really should be longer, but they get Superman right (at last!), they have some good set pieces, and some good character moments. It's up to you to decide whether the technical flaws are going to outweigh the things it got right, or vice versa.
WHY in the name of Hera did they decide that it was a good idea to release this thing two weeks AFTER Thor 3?!? It's like they purposely made every possible bad decision. Or is it because they clearly bribed so many of the critics so they'd be kind to it? (Hey, maybe THAT'S where the budget went?) Bob's is the only honest-sounding review I've found.
