Any part of bucket training I've seen, shaking the bucket is a big part of it. A local farmer to me here in Donegal, moves a lot of sheep easily with a few shakes. No dogs needed and amazing to watch. Also I'd say it looks like you're blocking their path and facing them, move to one side of path you want them to go and face slightly away. See it from their point of view. Cool vid, glad you're doing well with them. It'll get easier the more they're used to you.

Three Tips summarised from other commenters: 1. Shake the bucket to condition them to the stimulus of the bucket noise. That way they won't need to see the bucket anymore to follow it. 2. Put some sort of log or plank into the trough so rodents and cats can escape. This will prevent cats drowning and stop castle drinking dead rat water 3. Get some light into the barn at least until the cattle have got used to it for a few days because they struggle with and are weary of the dark

Good job moving the cows. I think having a second person really made a difference. There were a few moments where you could see the cows think about turning around and going back, but having someone behind stopped them. I am worried about the cats and that water tank. If they fell in, there's no way to get out. Could you put some rocks or cement blocks on one side to give them a way up and out?

Hi Morgan, please put a long sturdy log/board that extends at a angle INTO your water trough. This is useful in case anything falls into water trough: cats, rats, possums, birds, skunks. Allowing them to climb out preventing accidental drowning. Cattle farmers that graze their live stock in large acreage w/water troughs also use this method to keep water from being polluted. Enjoy your channel, and thank you for your honest family friendly content.

When you get one or two just inside the barn, splash the water in the trough some, or pour a bucket of water in, like you did outside. They need to know water is in the barn now. They are used to the tub outside, but may not associate it with water now that it's inside.

They might have a hard time going into the barn because of lack of light. Horses, cattle and such can find it scary going into a barn or stable because of how poorly their eyes handle the shift in light. They experience the dark opening into the barn as very very dark.

The hound hunters, who don't know how to Internet and watch GSF videos, one night sneak into the barn, intent on... who knows? The cats yell alarm howls, Toby (and maybe his lady soon) fills the door to stop escapees, the cattle wake up and investigate (for this is their home to defend now!), and the hunters... do they escape screaming, lost on the property, or are their battered (scratched, bitten, horn poked) bodies found in the morning...? Good thing Alison has great medical training and cameras are everywhere! Surviving hunters can move to the Big City and challenge gangs there maybe...

I'm glad it went so well. From documentaries of Highlands in Scotland I've seen, they're very hardy and apparently don't like being too crowded, so they probably won't use the shelter that much (though it's always best to give them the option, of course). It's funny watching the black cow, who seems to be the one in charge, because sometimes she takes the lead, and sometimes she lets Kurt go ahead and watches to see what happens to him 😂.

That went well, cowpokes! The help and planning was a big part. Is the only water for the cattle the trough in the barn? If so , that will draw them into the barn. But you really need to put some cinder blocks in the trough so cats have a way to get out if they fall in. When the water level is low, they might even use the blocks as a way to get to the water. Your subscriber base is growing nicely! How about having a contest to predict the number of subscribers on a certain date. May 1st for example. The winner would get a prize. I suggest naming rights for a new calf with Morgan setting the first letter of the name. My prediction is 754k subscribers on May 1st.

Congrats on the success. As they said when I was in the Army "Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance." And it looks like you took all the measures and prepared thoroughly enough for you to easily overcome the challenges of getting those cows to where you wanted them. I'd say the best move you made was having your friend join you. Getting them through that first gate probably seemed like a normal paddock move to the cows but once you got them into that alleyway with fencing on both sides and you and Kurt leading the way to their winter pen all your friend had to do was slowly bring up the rear and the cows unfamiliarity with him kept them from turning back or heading in other directions. It was good he mostly kept quiet and you kept up the soothing and familiar call they are used to so they never got so spooked that they panicked and tried to run. Honestly it couldn't have gone better and either by luck or by planning you executed it brilliantly. I can imagine it was pretty stressful for you leading up to this point and worrying about all the things that could go wrong. And I also imagine that when it all worked out so quickly and easily you probably felt a little silly on top of the overwhelming relief. But considering what could have gone wrong you were right to be so incredibly cautious and you were rewarded for it.

Morgan your cows like you now, they know you are the one bringing them pellets and water, molasses feed works really well at getting cattle to just follow you. That cow shaking its horn at you, it was disappointed you didn't give it an alfalfa pellet. They like those pellets, and expect you to have them. Get a nail pouch and fill it with pellets and wear it while you are with the cattle, they will love you for it. You can give them carrots and apples and tomatoes and heads of cabbage as treats, they will love you for it.

I think the best job Morgen ever did was give them each a name while he first started hand feeding them the biscuits, it made doing this last step a lot simpler for him, not to say it was not nerve raking to watch as they made their way to the barn but once they were there they settled in nicely. Yes they will love the added brush roll on the pole that be for sure. watching Kirt is so funny his neck got longer alone with that tongue stretching as far as it could go was so funny. I am sure with time and added work with them like what you are already doing will win them over but once they are thirsty enough that will also help with them going into the barn.

Tom made a good herding dog for you. Nice and slow and steady. You might also try a "rattle-paddle" This is a plastic paddle that is made out of basically "whiffle-ball-bat" type plastic (not super hard and stiff) that has a little plastic beads in it that "rattle" and make noise. These also work great to move cattle in front of you. It can also be a good defensive paddle if they do come at you with the horns to just keep from getting gored. It's a good tool to have on hand. Also keep looking towards where you want to go and they will get the idea to "follow the leader". Don't block their escape route, but give them an escape route in the direction you want them to go. Great job moving them Morgan and Tom! Ginny blends right in with the hay bale in coloring at this time of year. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Blessed and Happy New Year!

And without a squeeze chute how are you going to worm and vaccinate them? And what are they even for? Beef. Pets. They aren't great for either.. Unless you dehorn them they will always have the potential to seriously injured you. And because your a novice it will happen when you least expect it.West Texas rancher.

_I don't know the first thing about cattle so these are honest questions, not criticisms..._ What's the point of keeping the cattle in such a tiny yard with access to a barn for the winter? Is shelter during winter that important for them? Wouldn't they be happier, and healthier, being rotated throughout the pasture for the winter? Are you trying to make things easy for yourself in caring for them throughout the winter?

little advice, put something in the water in case a cat or another animal get stuck and need to get out, like a plank or something

The fear on the unknown is always fret with worry. You had a great plan, you had been working with your cattle, you had another person as a backup and lo and behold the plan worked. I know this whole process has been slow. A large part of this is that you are new to this game of raising cattle. I think it was smart to start off with some of the more docile breeds. Nothing like cutting your teeth with cattle that maybe a little more manageable.

"I bet with the next snow storm they will be in here." Curiosity will drive them in - not a snowstorm. They are walking, double-insulated, anaerobic digesters which is why they can live outside happily in Northern Scotland and Scandi countries during winter.

I know you have already researched this and I am all suburb gal, but arent they designed for the cold? Arent they going to get hot inside? Won't they lose their Vit D, freedom, etc binding them inside a dark barn? Wouldn't that be the same as putting Toby in a small dark box and keeping him there because you are afraid he will get cold? I have never heard of putting that long hair breed inside barns. Perhaps that is more for shorthaired dairy cows. Anyway

There's probably truth in what you're sharing. Then again, many many people store their dogs in little black cages for hours and hours everyday and still manage to project an air of righteousness.

@@marcellasmith8942 People don't always do the right thing. Cows in a barn is peanuts compared to dogs in a cage. Cows don't need much, but a dog certainly deserves to run free. Nobody bats an eye about the treatment of dogs/pets.

We believe that if we provide our livestock with good shelter, food and water (which you are doing) then it is up to the animal to choose to use it. So if the cattle decide not to use the barn 100% it's up to them. Highlands survive very well on open pasture if there are windbreaks.

Wow, that water bin legit looks like it could drown any small animal that fell in, that water line is low enough that nothing could grab the ledge and get out :( Could maybe place a 2x4 or long PVC pipe for things to crawl out of? lol

Wow! You did it! I have to be honest I had my doubts. Great idea to have Tom there. Seeing the cattle 🐄 “in” the barn helps give more of an idea of proportions. If they won’t go in the barn, what will you do to get water to them? You might consider those big salt cubes. It’s got minerals that are good for them and it will encourage them to drink. Just a suggestion for what it’s worth.

I think you might want to get used to getting rid of their poop, since they're staying in one place now. Otherwise the whole enclosure is gonna be full of it once the snow melts(and possibly other places downstream too).
