About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

YES! If the Tobster hadn't been locked up, I'm sure he would have moved the cow back to the designated area & alerted Morgan to the escape with his barking. Maybe Morgan can train the Highlanders to walk on a leash/rope as well...?

A few things to consider from someone who grew up on a farm with cows. A) Your ability to provide the best life for your animals is admirable. B) Being a responsible farmer amongst other things include being able to catch an animal in the worst case scenario. I would recommend learning how to lasso. C) Those bovine respect you and that is awesome. D) Placing feeders near fences creates problems with pretty much any four legged creature.

I remember when I was a kid while visiting Wisconsin forget the town, but while eating breakfast at the local diner a farmer was walking his cow down the street like he was walking his dog (without the leash). He had that cow laydown in the pasture while he came in and ate his breakfast. It was a dairy cow and she just stayed and didn't move an inch. Very smart animals.

Toby actually did a great job of jumping at Ariel (3:54) and making her double think going down that lane when she was trying to go down that isle between the pens. His sudden movement helped to turn her back to you. Toby has some really really good herding sense! Ginny is almost camouflaged in that hay bale. It would be cool to see her with Ginny-Cam going into that hole in the hay. Talking to the cows really gets them to like your voice. You might put a "command" call for them that will get them wanting to really come to that bucket like you do with the ducks and geese. "Hey Cow" "Moove it".."Here-Boss" something you can repeat to them and they will learn it.

That you stopped to formally introduce Buck and Toby despite the fact it was the middle of the night (and that Toby was just like “Yep. That’s a chicken”) 3. That Buck kind of had a little chicken moment amongst the geese like “What’s with these Huge, Weird Chickens?!”

Ariel on the bucket list. As for the cattle fence: Just use a steelbar fence on the fencing next to the feeder, you can chain the feeder to the fence, making it easier to fill from the outside and preventing the cattle from walking between feeder and fence, risking they break the fence.

So cute! Tunnels in the hay. Reminds me of the tunnels my siblings and I used to make for our cats inside the walls of snow igloos we built on our farm. Every winter when we were kids, after the first big snowfall, my dad would use the tractor and bucket to scoop up the snow and build us kids a nice compact igloo built of snow and straw. We could play "outside" for hours inside that giant maze of fun. We stayed warm and mostly dry and the barn cats seemed to have fun exploring the cat sized tunnels we carved out. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. 💗🦋💗

Lol, I love that you still made formal introductions between Buck and Toby, even though it was the middle of the night. Maybe create another gate or panel that can open right beside the cattle feeder (or move the feeder closer to an existing gate) so you can move the feeder further from the fence line, and then drive in a bit to put out a new bale. Might require a second person or an additional gate to make an "air lock" area, to make sure no one slips out while you're doing it though. I think having a second feeder is a good idea, since there is a clear pecking order in the herd. I worry the one girl at the bottom doesn't get enough to eat, and also doesn't get the chance to become more familiar and comfortable with you before time for calving. Its going to be critical that you or a vet be able to help them if needed, and also, you might want to have some way set up to separate the bullies from a birthing cow and newborn calf for a bit. Also, a thought, if you are working toward being able to pet them and groom them, start carrying whatever brush or grooming implement you might want to use to get them familiar with that too, along with the bucket and treat training. Just a bunch of opinions you didn't ask for from someone who doesn't actually know anything about cattle, lol.

If there is ice covering the hot wires it will not jolt the cattle. Take 2 plastic gate handles and run them along the wire to remove ice. Ground rod needs to be 8 foot long, pounded into the ground with a t post driver and leave 12 to 18 inches above ground. Area around ground rod needs to be moist all year to keep fence hot. Moving the hay feeder away from the fence would be helpful. Woven fence needs to be stretched tight so it won’t sag and allow escape points. Clean up wasted hay off the ground.. it is pushing woven wire out. Good job getting her back in with the treat bucket. It pays to train livestock especially when something happens in the middle of the night. Yep.. cattle can be very hard on fences until they have proper respect for them. I knew a cattle rancher who had a bull escape often. He finally got tired of it and put the electric fence ground wire attached to ground rod down the well. That bull challenged the fence once after that and rancher never had any cattle escape again.

I’m not being critical, but try moving the hay feeder over near the barn. You could drop the hay from the barn into the feeder. That’s the setup we had years ago.

Hah! Sixty years ago my grandfather kept a herd of about 20 Highlanders and once a year or so a couple would "wander off" magically. Always found them. Great cattle, great memories,

Ariel is adorable, and thank goodness for your training! And Uncle Buck... What a handsome devil! What breed is he? We'll be starting our flock here in the next couple months, and am actively looking at larger breed chickens to start out with.

i love your farm. I cant wait til you add some hogs!!! This reminds me so much of my deddy's farm (grandad) i grew up around! ❤

the only difference in your farm and my grandad's was he built a two tear chicken coup. He had a hen house in the middle where he housed his rosters and he had a pin surrounding it where the hens lived. He had the nesting boxes lined up against the inside coup (where the rosters lived). I asked him one time why he did it that way and he said it made the hens lay eggs faster without them getting fertilized and without all the drama from the rosters to the hens. Something about being around rosters makes hens lay faster. IDK... just a thought.

Hi! New subscrber here! Been loving binging your videos! You may have addressed this before but I haven't come across it yet. Do you have a problem with flying predators? Hawks & Owls can be a real nuisance here in in the Midwest along with the ground predators. Great videos! Glad I found you!

Nicki Schlemmer - Morgan has addressed air-borne predators a few times as he most certainly lost at least one animal (duck?) to an air attack. He added owls statues to his duck tractors. Toby arrived a few months later and there has not been an attack since then.
