A quick video showcasing one last method of moving the origin point using the Affect only menu. Yes, I told you that the 3D cursor was the key tool for the origin point control. It still is, however, there is one other way to do origin point movement. Not only that but you can use CAD transforms to move the origin point too.

Damn those videos are really well made! The quality is there, the explanations are easy to understand. Great stuff overall, I'll show this to my friends because this series deserves more views. :)

THANK you, this is the proper way to move the origin. Not digging through three menus. Edit: Also really appreciate that you get to the point and dont play around in the scene for 5min doing stuff everyone already knows

Another great one Jonathon - 👍👍 Sure wish I'd run across this tutorial earlier today. I needed to move the origin to a specific mid-point of my imported Solidworks model then move the whole thing to the 3D cursor location. I didn't know how to do that but after watching this video I just tried it using the _Affect Only - Origins_ command and it worked perfectly. Thanks again!!! 😁

It's my fifth attempt at learning blender....I'm actually getting it thanks to you (and I've watched many tutorials). Coming from CAD and Inventor, you're filling in all my blindspots! However, at about 3:20 you did a splice in the video and left out a key part! I can't seem to get out of CAD Transforms! My spacebar activates the timeline at the bottom of the screen.

This is fantastic. I am trying to work out what to use to create segments for bowl turning. Gears looked close and so did the array. For both, I need the wedge shape of the rotated segment to move hard against one edge. Each ring of segments is then glued to the stack. From all this the model should give me the length of each segment for each layer in the stack. If you have any suggestions that would be great.

I don't have the CAD transforms panel at the top left corner (Below the File Edit Render), I only have the Object Mode, View, Select, Add, and Object

Thanks for the great tutorials :-) When I press G to grab the origin, the 'Snap to' menu disappears, whereas at 1.45 in the video when you press G, it doesn't. How do I pin the menu, so that it doesn't disappear. I've looked in prefs/Google, but without any luck.

Hey Man, thanks for the Whole series it helped me a Lot starting with Blender. Before i worked with Rhino and some things where very complicated within. But Blender took a big step forward during the last years so that i decided to Jump in It. I have a question : I isntalled all Add ons that you have mentioned but everytime i saved the preferences, quit my work and want to come back with a fresh File CAD Transforms disappear, but it is checked in the Add on Preferences. What is wrong ?

Hmmm that is very strange.... I would suggest asking the developer directly: blenderartists.org/t/cad-like-transform/1226197

Is there a way to move the gizmo while in Edit mode? While in Object mode, I moved it right where the origin is, but when I go to Edit mode and select some vertices, the gizmo's location is based on the median of the selected vertices; not on the origin.
@UmbraVivens94

the O shortcut actually toggles proportional editing instead of CAD origin snap mode, you forgot to mention you had that shortcut changed
@Keep-Making
@Keep-Making Год назад
Hmmm sounds to me like you might not have CAD Transforms activated and in a transform operation, it overrides the proportional editing shortcut. As I've not changed any of my shortcuts from default.

just a heads up, AFAIK its best to not upload a load of videos to RU-vid on the same day. I believe the algorithm favours a maximum of one upload per day
@Keep-Making
@Keep-Making 3 года назад
Hey bassplaya69er, Thanks for looking out for me. I have a feeling that this is no longer the case. Seems that many youtube "mentors" have done test uploading from just 1 a week to 30 videos a day and have no real difference. Looks like watch time is currently the biggest factor. This is not usually my jam tho. I just want to get this series out and get back to doing some hands on maker stuff. But I really appreciate the helping hand.

Affect only is exactly what I thought was lacking in Blender .. the ability to treat the gizmo as an object to relocate without affecting mesh. That 3D Trans treats it similarly is defo a bonus. Well done Edit: Appears to be available ONLY in Object mode which is baffling. Needs to be optional in Edit mode as well. Can it be? Edit mode allows different mesh parts or wholly separate meshes of the same object to be manipulated. If only the transformed axis parameters could be saved and called up ... would be much like AutoCad's custom UCS's. Edit 2: Your examples always show a cube sitting nice and square to the Global world space. Take your cube and rotate it so that no face is co-planar and no edge is co-linear and move the cube so the center is well off somewhere relative to the Global origin. Now try to quickly align your gimbal to one of the faces using the methods shown here. Try to get the cube centered back to the global origin with the faces and edges co-planar and co-linear with no squared object to snap or reference to. Even with Cad Transform the operation is tedious compared to AutoCad. If I saw it done it might make sense ..

Hey Xen Uno, I'll see if I can make a future video that shows some more advanced snapping with CAD transforms. You could always ask on the CAD transform forum for clarification on how to do this type of movement : blenderartists.org/t/cad-like-transform/1226197 I know it be a little counter intuitive at time as it's a different way of working with mesh. Personally if find it hard to compare a $720 a year CAD program with $0 a year opensource VFX program.

@@Keep-Making It's not AutoCad only .. CAD progs paid or free have this ability. It's CAD 101 and is invaluable for modelers as well. Modelers are essentially CAD with a more organic workflow and less emphasis on building a real world object from plots generated. That's the reasoning behind the comparison. Rhinoceros isn't free but is quite fab at both CAD'ing and at modeling. I'm sure Blender will get there eventually with help for now by such plugins as CT

Thank you! I was wondering why the hell I don't have that "Affect only" option. It is a pitty that it is possible just in object mode

I'm not sure if anyone else experiences this or if you have covered it, but I am constantly frustrated orbiting my view around the objects. I find myself wishing for the rotate arrows from the Fusion 360 iso cube. Is this function lurking somewhere in Blender ?

Hi Ian, Hmmm interesting. The best option I have to share is using the numpad buttons 4,5,6,2, This stepped rotation view port movement. Let me know if that helps out.

You may want to try this; Go to Edit --> Preferences --> Navigation Inside the Navigation panel, under the Orbit & Pan dropdown menu, tick the Orbit Around Selection checkbox. In addition, you may want to tick the Zoom to Mouse Position checkbox (under Zoom dropdown menu) too. I hope this could help you out.
