Lyndsay Jensen, the founder and editor of The International, is back in the studio with Annie and Derek to talk about the political changes in how foreigners in Denmark are treated and perceived. She recently spoke at Folkemødet on the needs of internationals living in Denmark and their important place in the Danish economy and society at large.
In the discussion, Lyndsay references her eldest son, Connor, who moved to Denmark as a child and has been shaped by multiple cultures throughout his life. It seemed only right to have Connor join the conversation and share his experiences with teenage drinking, learning Danish and transitioning into the education system, and the cultural differences he experienced when inviting friends to his home as a kid.
The conversation was eye-opening to Annie who moved her oldest sons to Denmark and is going through many of these changes in real time.
Don’t forget to share this podcast with any friends who have made the move to Denmark.

I enjoy the podcast, I had more or less stopped watching the videos. The segment about the handicap sector really hits home for me, it is so hard to get what on paper you should be entitled too. Keep up the good work.

Dane here. There's some really valid points being made. I belivie that our policies are outdated and doesn't reflect the current needs of our society. There have been stricter and stricter legislation on immigration since the late 90's and also kind of understandably so. We didn't end up as Sweden who went with a more lose approach and i believe it was necessary to realize that we weren't capable of proper integrating the people coming here. However, times have changed and so should we. With Love, Coconut.

dunno, seems a bit weird foreigners discussing changes and how to change immigration policy of other countries, it should be up to local Danes and not for immigrants or those wanting to immigrate there to them what their immigration policies should be like. Its somehow reminiscent of times when usually European immigrants been making immigration policies of other countries in Africa, Australia etc. As a non-native its not our place to judge who locals want to live with in their country, we either accept their terms and move there or not and move elsewhere or stay in our own country..

Well she’s married to a Dane and has two Danish kids and she has been impacted by the laws regarding her own marriage. I guess people have opinions on the place they live, work, and pay taxes - I wouldn’t compare that to Colonialism.

@@RobeTrotting Part of integrating into society certainly also includes taking part in the public debate, and immigration is always on the debate here, so I'd say all here is doing exactly what is expected of them to be a part of danish society, the last step would be naturalisation, which is the point where you get to actually vote on the matter, even if only indirectly, but free speech is certainly something we do value in Denmark.

I think foreigners here are in the best position to talk about our immigration policy as they are the ones who are the target of it. To me it makes sense. They are also people who have been here long enough to have passed through the shining surface and are now looking into more serious subjects and impacts of the policy.

These podcasts are probably too 'locally oriented' for most viewers. There are lots of ex-pats in Europe, but each country has it owns idiosyncracies and I could imagine that most viewers are basically interested in the countries where they actually live.

try watching "traveling young"'s latest video. Maya came to the country with her parents at the age of 11...(8 years ago) - she has completed the classical public school, (not international school), she will graduate this summer as a student, she works and pays taxes. she cannot get a visa herself until she has been in the country for 10 years, and must still be a "family member" on her parents' work visa as a 19-year-old. it's completely wrong when the country's politicians can't see an "idea" in letting her stay and pay to society for her education, instead we risk her taking her skills elsewhere, IF (god forbid) her parents suddenly find themselves out of work. -and if expats weren't going to imagine you for this knowledge, who was going to? would you find reason to investigate this yourself?

@@KurtFrederiksen There is an appeal to your second paragraph on recruiting and molding young people into the Danish samfund, however DK is not a social culture that easily rewards ambition and initiative, which are characteristics youth often have in abundance. Instead you have a "brain-drain" whereby native Danes with substantial education leave their mother country for greener pastures. I renew my critique that hapless DK needs to learn to integrate lesser skilled migrants away from urban ghettos and into the landsby agricultural sector.

Foreigners have been welcome in Denmark since before the country was called Denmark, if they behave properly. The problem with lowering the requirements for foreigners who want to come to Denmark is that then all those who we are not interested in will come. The solution could be to exclude people from areas of the world where we know there will be problems when they come to Denmark, but according to international rules we are not allowed to do so, they say. These uninvited guests cause a stir and cost approx. DKK 300 million per Danish municipality. Perhaps that is why there is no money for welfare. Aarhus cost a few families hundreds of millions, and Odense has the same problem.

The Romans thought Denmark was a worthless backwater, of course their exposure was primarily Jylland, from whence they engaged in trade for cattle, but still even while trying to establish an imperial presence in Germania the Eagle found Britannia across the North Sea far more appealing for commerce and migratory settlement than Cimber Denmark.
@holgerandersengrn3457
@holgerandersengrn3457 Месяц назад
@@williamjones4716 You are right about that, especially in relation to Rome. It's cold, wet in Denmark and back then the Danes didn't like people who couldn't behave properly, so the sword came. It has changed to today, where there are many foreigner who do not know how to behave. The English were probably more at ease with foreigners who came to visit. The Danes have invaded England 3 times with great success.

FYI: The reason why all the nurses, doctors and others in the public health sector are fleeing their jobs is because the ludicrously low salary (for nurses) and stress. They can often double their pay by taking a job in private institutions, or by moving to Norway. No young people want to take an education and career as long as the work conditions are appalling, and the job functions are underappreciated. Goes without saying... Side note: Over the past 50 years, since we joined the €U, Danish living standards have dropped; the public healthcare is just one example.

Conner's a bit of a freak show with all the tats, is he employable anywhere other than at a comic shop? Looks like a couple years in the Danish Army might do him some good and give him a more "Viking" physique and bearing.
