Moving To Ireland - Cottage Buying Q&A 

MAY all your dreams come true, I'm from England myself moved to Tipperary 6years ago, purchased a property that had sat empty for 8 years. Many local farmers welcomed me to there village and expressed their relief that the property was finally being occupied . One thing I did find out very quickly is the Irish people are beautiful from the inside out, Fit into there way of life and be part of the community and you will find you have amazing people supporting you every step you take. If you're moving into a farming community respect there way of life and remember there not cutting hay at 10 ,o'clock at night to annoy you its because they have to work with the weather. A farmer would rather be at home with his family just as we are.

Hi Daniel, and Hi Chris, if you see this. I'm from Dublin and still have a 9to5 job in Dublin. I'm not sure how much longer that is going to last.The older I get the less i like the city and the people. I bought an old house on just under an acre a few years ago in Co. Roscommon. Roscommon is a beautiful county, just west of the river Shannon. The county is full of lakes and tributaries of the Shannon. It is very popular with English people and lots of people from England have moved there. It's one of the cheapest counties in Ireland to buy houses and there are lots of old derelict houses. One of the reasons why English people love it is because it is so rural and quiet. The population of the entire county is about 65,000!! so there are far fewer people around than you will find in most of England. As Daniel says right of way is important, my solicitor had to deal with that when I bought. daft.ie is definitely the way to go. Water supply, electricity and septic tanks will all cost a lot of money if they're not already there. In my experience the soil is fertile and most things grow abundantly. There is a lot of rain in the winter and there can be considerable flooding so that is something that may need researching. Find somewhere on higher ground. £50,000 sterling will probably buy you a place but you will need more for renovations. In my experience internet connection is a bit haphazard. Living in Germany for around 20 years. Bought a derelict cottage in my home county Tipperary 3 years ago. Spent the last few winters there doing it up. Getting to the stage soon where I will be moving back full time. It's been an amazing experience. It's been tough. My advice to anyone doing the same is to prepare and embrace the struggle. It's all part of the fabric of the experience. Best of luck to all of you. When sitting under the 200 year old wooden beam of my ingelnook fireplace I know it's been all worth it.

We moved from the UK to Ireland , we bought a cottage in 2014' that hadn't been lived in for 10 years and used to come over for holidays until we could do the move. It takes time to renovate and make a home, but a beautiful place to live if you like the quiete and rural life, no regrets, in County Mayo, the west of Ireland 🦋🐝

Hello! from the Cork/Waterford border. I moved here in 2001 from Bedfordshire, with two kids, dog and cat, caravan and Landrover. I bought 15 acres and built my house single-handed (former builder). Kids now grown and back in the UK. Not many ruined cottages for sale here anymore but there are a few. Met my, now, wife at Lisdoonvarna! 13 years ago. Ran our place as a B&B for 10 years to earn more capital. As I type this we are shelling peas ready for blanching...happy days!! Best of luck with your continued efforts. Edit.- I imagine moving after any type pf Brexit will be slightly more complicated

I am from the area you are in .....Mayo / Sligo border ....I think! Bit of advice for the guy with €50,000. Buy one of those ruins for about €10000. Knock it down lay a foundation slab and rebuild it exactly as it was size etc with the old stone. New electrics and plumbing good insulation and have a happy life. Old cottages are damp and generally in awful condition and will be an uncomfortable money pit. You can do that for total cost of €50,000 as long as you keep it simple and well built. if you can do work yourself ie build stone etc it will cost less again.

As a life-long gardener, I very much envy your lifestyle and life perspective. I rarely ever see or hear such a detailed almost philosophical approach to life. A Dubliner here. Lots of good information there for anyone thinking of doing what you have. A couple of extra things could be mentioned. If you have children, check out where the local school is and if there is convenient transport. Most schools here are run by religions so if you are an atheist you have to know that. Security, if you live alone out in the sticks, should be considered. We have had some elderly farmers living alone who were attacked and robbed - not an everyday occurrence, but it has happened, ask Mr. Google, he's your friend. Ask why the previous owner left, is the property now on a flood plain? Yes, people have bought houses and discovered too late that it floods during bad winters or bad summers. You can't look for a 'pretty property', YOU have to make it pretty. It's not all roses. YOU have to bring the roses! Would I like a lifestyle like Mossy's? Yes, but I'm cautious.

Also, be aware that Ireland does not have an NHS equivalent. Unless you are under 5 or over 70, or earn less than a starvation income of 10,000 euros (£8000) per year, you have to pay for all your medical care. I am Australian and have lived in Ireland for 7 years. After living most of my life under the Australian Medicare system, it was a traumatic experience to pay for a doctor's visit for the first time in my life. Needless to say, I stay away from doctors now, unless I am in agony. There is a free public hospital and A&E system, but it is hopelessly underfunded and manned by underpaid and overworked staff. The waiting lists are very loooong! For example, I had a melanoma scare earlier this year (which turned out to be benign). My GP referred me to the public waiting list for a plastic surgeon. After waiting for 4 weeks and going out of my mind with worry, I finally opted to go private. The whole procedure cost me 400 euros (£360) out of pocket after medical insurance. Four weeks after the procedure, I received a letter from the local public hospital, informing me that I had an appointment with a plastic surgeon. Had my symptom turned out to be a melanoma, this delay could well have cost me my life. So, if you want to move to Ireland, it is essential to factor medical expenses and medical insurance into your budget. And medical insurance is expensive. The most basic of all covers is about 800 euros (£720) per year. Don''t want to put you off, but this is something you need to consider.

Thank you so much for this video, I'm currently busy with moving to Ireland together with my husband and 2 daughters. It's so stressful and your little chat really helps with reminding me that it is just a matter of persevering. We're moving to a small town just outside of Dublin and it's difficult sometimes to remind myself that as soon as we have a drivers license we will be able to buy a home in a more rural location. I live in Ireland. I haven't seen any run down cottages for less than 20k, and there's all sorts of planning permissions and building regulations you need to meet which adds to the cost. I honestly wouldn't bother untill the housing market crashes again.

Lots of solid suggestions here. Being courageous and persevering are definitely life skills that are so valuable. Many people try to convince you not to pursue your dream... but it is not their dream, so of course they cannot relate. So valuable to imagine what one's life will be like in 5-10 years. Making choices around what fulfills one in order to create that lifestyle. These are definitely golden nuggets in your video. I find your videos very interesting and inspiring. I enjoy the topics that you have covered. Realities of money and budget, recognizing that isolation may or may not be a hindrance, developing skills during your lifetime that enable you to be self-sufficient... good stuff! I'm frm Germany my dad studied 54 Km frm London we lived in Essex when I was small I like London, Reading, Oxford & love West Ireland & Celtic Music & castle s & the old cottages! It s great that you' ve saved one. I truely admire you for plan ting veggies n fruit- + other trees on yr stoney windy field it s nice how you showed us how a chicken house shld be built, my dad also had chicken when we couldn't get meat regularly in late 1968. I helped him to look after them, my dad is a biologist frm Asia we lived on a stat. in the bush, we had scarey python snakes that came in to our big garden so our grass was cut short weekly. It s a pitty that yr cottage is in a bad state if you put in 2 extra windows & stabilise it on 4 sides frm floor to the roof with metall posts n also in the middle of the house. You can get students who help you 4 free. There s a guy, Shawn 43 yrs he s close to Toronto he built 2 wood Log Huts nearly by him self in the forest @ a lake he has bears on his land, he built a fire place in side & a big one for cooking with a wood roof & 1 extra bath room outside. He builds wood shelfs & furniture with simple tools instead of using a drill. He is nice he said on RU-vid that he will help ppl with his advice how to build houses & furniture etc by yourself. He hunts deer (what I don't like so much) & even in winter he makes holes in a frozzen lake Ontario & catches fish as he s 50 Km frm a town, he wants to supply himself with food. His reddish dog is Calli, Shawn sleeps in the loft of his hut if his friends come they bring some extra food in winter it gets up to -28 o Cel so he must ve enough food supply as fruit veggies & beans in glasses & now he has a freezer he has a few Solar panels that give him a lot of power 4 wifi. Maybe u can get some wood frm the forrest & frm old deserted cottages & old trees close 2 u that u must dry 4 weeks in 1 oven before using it

I so enjoy your videos and try to watch them as soon as they pop up. To move to Ireland would be a glorious dream for me. Logistically, it would be difficult, not only financially, but physically as i have two elderly horses and a number of pets, as well as furniture passed down in my family... All that would be involved in transporting them is mind-boggling.. i LOVE the idea of a small renovated cottage, a garden, a small field, and a simple life.. Love the videos. I'm in America where things seem to be getting worse each day. I think the life you have chosen to live is a wonderful one. I'm currently seeking out something similar where I'm located and it's very hard to find. I'm a simple man who wants seclusion, peace of mind and to get out of the "rat race" and enjoy life as it was meant to be. We're not materialistic people and absolutely love nature. We all often forget to stop and smell the roses because we are so caught up in what America deems as the "normal" way of living. Everyone is so caught up with their gadgets and keeping up with the Joneses. My wife and I are completely different and love the simple life. Hi Daniel. Just came across your channel. I'm in Manchester and have been considering Ireland as an option so this video discussing the practicalities is very helpful. Other practical considerations in Ireland that I need to find out about that affect living costs etc. are taxes (especially property taxes) and the healthcare system, etc. I'm also considering Scotland but that is simpler in the respect that it's less different than here as it's still in the UK (for the moment at least). Anyway, excellent video and channel, very inspiring, thanks for making it.

My husband and I are moving to Galway City in September to begin a 4 year PhD at NUIG. We're renting for the first year, but are very much set on buying a derelict cottage after that. Many years ago now but I and along with some other mad people sea kayaked along the south coast from Kinsale to just short of Dingle bay during a may bank holiday week I seem to remember and the sea was flat calm all week and blisteringly hot, the Guiness was superb. Yes very beautiful country

My late husband and I had a bucket list that included moving from the States to either Scotland or Ireland. He was of Scottish heritage and I am of Scottish/Irish heritage. We actually looked at some cottages online. We had a romantic dream of having a small, thatched cottage on a cliff overlooking the sea. We knew our golden retriever would love it too. Lovely place.

Great video. I recently moved from South East England to Donegal, Ireland with my wife, kids and collie and have to say, so far, it has to be the best decision we ever made. Our move was made easier as we relocated to the area where my wife's parents and family grew up and still live (and have visited many many times before), but despite having people fairly near to us it's still so peaceful, calm and beautiful. We haven't undertaken a project quite to your scale but we are currently renovating our dormer bungalow and sort of camping in just a few rooms. Keep up the good work, you are an inspiration to us all.

Big factor to consider is whether or not you can get along with people. My rich nephew has a great and very unassuming presence , and is a very good listener. This helped him run off to be a ranch hand with cattle in isolated areas where the neighbors are generally wary and careful to understand who you are. (My brother says the older couple he works for as well as the owner of the cattle ranch are shocked the ranch hand they hired is not a drunk, not doing drugs, highly educated, self taught in Spanish to help manage others, and absolutely reliable. My nephew is thinking of cashing some of his bank accounts and property to buy his own cattle ranch here in the states.)

Hi Daniel. Have you been to Mullaghmore? If you haven't go on sunny day, turn left at Strand Hotel and continue to end of that road. It's T junction. Turn right and views from there are incredible. Only once before seen comparable and that was on Cork Kerry border. Well worth trip but do travel on sunny day.

That guy can get something very nice in Bulgaria or Eastern Europe for GBP50,000... its very depopulated in the rural side, some stuff is livable for EUR25-30,000; and the rest can be spent to update and make it to your tastes...

Sitting there in the sun with that beautiful garden in the background does not look like 'roughing it'. Lol. I'm sure the winter is a different matter. I lived on a boat for four years through two of the worst winters in recent times so I'm used to rough. I bought a cottage in the UK earlier this year. It came with a separate piece of land that is directly in front. It was expensive for some but as I moved out of an expensive city it was way cheaper than the city. I am starting from scratch in my 60s and it's hard work but doable. Definitely some make do and mend as I have no capital left. I have one of those crazy lanes. Double edge sword of bad access but ultimate privacy and no immediate traffic. I totally agree it's a lifestyle choice. My hubbie says we have a brilliant garden that came with a house. It's not everyone's cup of tea and its hard graft particularly as you get animals. It's too easy to look at others and think I'd love that life but it's more complex. Do your research would be my advice.

Hello - I'm from the US and have a dream similar to yours of buying some land and trying my shot at sustainable living. I am looking at a property right now in the US - a farmhouse built in 1897. I agree with Deb Fryer. I'd love a tour of the cottage and some discussion around what's involved in fixing it up - like "how to's." Also I'm curious about how the solar panels work - and how much energy you get form them. Southern Illinois is probably slightly warmer than where you are, but I think it rains as much there as it does in Ireland. I’m from the US and 3 years ago I moved out of the city to 6 acres in a nearby rural town. I love the slower lifestyle. I’ve added many animals to my homestead and grew a garden for the first time. I DO love watching videos showing scenery from other countries. I’ve always wanted go visit Ireland... it is beautiful.

You really are an inspiration to me. I’m starting a bit later in life on this journey but I hope to be able to become as self sustaining as I can possibly be in the time I have left. Your videos have helped me immensely. Thank you. I’ll be on my way in a year or two to the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina in the US. Just as soon as I can get my finances on point. I have no thought of moving, etc. I just like to follow your story because it is a good one. Have you checked the Bealtaine Cottage website? She has so many good tips for your way of life. I like to see your dog, your gardens, your animals, trees etc. What are you learning as you renovate an old cottage?

A lot of cottages over here are bought for the land they stand on,. The old cottages are sometimes demolished to make room for new builds.

It's very nice to see many people now turning to homesteading. People are meant to enjoy the fruit of their own labor. I believe this so much. It's much more fulfilling to pick your own lot of berries than simply buy ones from the supermarket. It's also healthier. I left a *very* well paying white collar job for a blue collar trade and a home in the suburbs because i wanted my kids to have a good upbringing. Since i've gotten here i've renovated near the entire home all on my own, planted trees, grew a garden. My back hurts but it's worth it in my eyes.

ALWAYS A BLESSING TO HEAR FROM YOU dear Mossy! Moss is soOOoo chill throughout this vid...he is the 'best' advertising to 'head to the Country' for not only charm, but PEACE! The inconveniences that come from dramatic changes in lifestyle, to me, are far outweighed by the ESCAPE from modern day STRESS and it's rat race. We need to GO BACK...if we are to MOVE FORWARD. We have lost 'so much' of what is TRULY of value. We have made everything 'plastic' and is plastic better? There is definitely a CRAVING for your lifestyle choices, and I am VERY PROUD of all the hard work you have accomplished...even the nice little table you are using. It is all well-thought out work, but a labor of love. Love of LIFE and an appreciation for it's Creator. Your 'attitude' Mossy, is RIPE for a life of Joy, Peace, and the Happiness, you so readily exude and share with us. You wear it well! Thank-you most kindly! I am a 60 year old man born and reared in Dublin and envy you so much. I would love to live as you do. I have just come into a small windfall 100k. I would not mind being isolated at all but I am not too good with my hands at DIY. Do you think I could do what you do..? I can grow anything and love horticulture. I envy you so much... Cosmos and foxgloves used to grow wild in Washington State but the climate seems to have changed so that they don't anymore. Nice to see them appearing to be growing wild there.
