I love how well you explained everything in detail, especially the taxes between NY & NJ. I've worked & lived in NY, then lived in NJ & worked in NY, & also lived & worked in NJ lol so I've seen all the different taxes so it was nice to see you break that down. 🧠
I actually live in Long Island City in a luxury building as well. Depending on what part of LIC you're in, it's not far from mid-town at all. In fact, I can drive across the Ed Koch Bridge and be in mid-town in 10-15 minutes depending on the day of the week, and it's the same with the train. I currently commute to work in the East Village and my commute is 20-25 minutes door-to-door. Because it is so convenient, a 1 bedroom apt in my building starts at $3300 per month but, we have in-unit washer and dryers, dishwasher, stainless steel appliances, floor-to-ceiling windows, a doorman, pool, sauna, gym, basketball court, package room, game room, simulated golf, roof-top decks lounges, business center, pet spa, doggy daycare, dog walking services and a bunch of other amenities that I am forgetting about. There are a LOT of restaurants, transportation, and even a Trader Joe's directly across the street. LIC is SUPER convenient but, it's gonna cost you. Thank you so much for sharing and letting us know which areas to avoid. ❤
When my family first moved to Jersey City, it was not as busy as it is right now. There were not as much skyscrapers. Did you know The Goldman Sachs Building was complete in 2004. If you o to Jersey City or you just moved to the place, definitely try Tirico. It is an amazing Ice Cream place.
If you have a little more commute time, there's a light rail that starts in Bayonne, runs thru Jersey City, and does stop at a PATH station. Then continues all the way through Hoboken. Finding an apt. close to a station can find you a variety of rent prices and still a fairly short commute to NYC
I’m moving into my apartment in feb and it’s literally right across from the light rail. 10 min ride on light rail and then 15 on path from Newport into the city. Got a great deal
From Boston as well 🙌🙌🙌 ...Living, well left Brooklyn (loved it there) a week before quarantine started back in March...I'm back in Boston (for now) since I'm working remote. I always had my eye on Jersey City and Hoboken and planning to purchase something in the future. Feel like you get more bang for your buck in NJ than NY. Its good to know about the tax difference. Thanks for that info.
No problem! And Hoboken is almost as ridiculously priced as NYC now sadly. Was looking at buying as well and even Jersey City is getting ridiculous now too lol
Would you say jersey city more suited for a car? I kbiw NYC most people dont need a car, but im lazy lol so walkin everywhere is out of the question. That being said is jersey city more suited if i had a car?
@@acejo4594 Parking is a pain. You would also have to pay for a parking permit but it’s inexpensive. A lot of the newer buildings do come with indoor and outdoor garages which will run you $150-200/month.
Born and raised in North Jersey. I moved straight to Brooklyn when I moved. Yes the further back you are in jersey city the worse the area is. Although that area especially around Journal square has been gentrifying like crazy since I was a kid. I live in Atlanta now and couldn't see myself ever paying prices up there that I get for a 3 bedroom house with a big yard down here. Also this may be new but I believe they stop running the path train service over night now whereas it used to run 24/7.
I think you should have got 3 months free if you signed a 1-year contract in any new buildings in JC, which would bring huge discount in the net payment.
Tbh the new buildings in JC I saw doing this are still not very full. At this point my building only has 2 units available, so not much bargaining power with a building that is over 95% occupied within less than a year of opening sadly.
@@mark22390 manhattan is directly across the river, meaning one or two train stops from jersey city. brooklyn is not much farther. the night life is normally great but seems to be on hold because of ongoing nonsense related to the virus. there's lots to do and it's all walking distance.
Hi, im planning to move across the country with family to JC, can u plz give some advice wt are the safe and reasonable neighbourhoods for families to live.
@@Bogusuap I know that. But it's tough for most people to leave a metro area. Roots. Family and Life long friends. I'm not willing to move that far out yet. But when I do, it'll probably Wyoming or South Dakota.
I’m from jersey city and know the area you live in from your view ( won’t say it because you didn’t) and your only about 5-10 minutes away from your old place, the rivet but I get it your not from here so being close to rt 440 can be a big deal to you. I live in midtown between journal square and Bergen Lafayette ( the hill) and a lot of violence goes on in that area but if you mind your business jersey city is good place to move and stay close to the city no matter where you are in Hudson county your travel time will be the same as if you were in one of the boroughs, even faster sometimes. If you want to just hop on the train and go then downtown and journal square are the best it’ll take you 10-15 mins to get into the city which is the same time as if you lived in Brooklyn, All in all I love my city 🌃
Hey Jason! Thanks for your comment and watching! My new apartment is more like 10-15 minutes away from The Rivet w no traffic, but i moved mainly bc of all the construction and my commute into Manhattan was soooo long getting to Journal Sq PATH bc of all the traffic from the schools and rush hour. I definitely like being In Journal Sq more, but obviously has its drawbacks (noise, street cleaning lol).
Thanks for the info. Glad I stumbled upon your channel. The misses and I should be moving soon. We saw a place in Bayonne and liked it a lot. We saw Jersey City but wasn’t sure where to live to commute close to city since we both work in a Brooklyn and both drive. My biggest concern is Tolls and the tax with work (which you explained👍🏾) but the tolls to me feels like I’ll be saving money moving to NJ but spending the savings back into Tolls for a 5 day work week. What’s your take and any advice on a specific neighborhood besides the two you recommended. We want a new building as well. Thanks and God bless. Heading to watch your Apt Tour
Thanks for watching! I believe if you get EZPass it should bring the cost down of the toll a bit, but it’d still be pretty expensive. I used to live at a building called The Rivet. It’s a little deeper into Jersey City, but the rent for a one bedroom with parking for 1 car was around $2055 in a new building. I’m not sure what you’re paying in rent right now, but $2055 for a 725 sq ft new apartment is on the low end in Jersey City. There’s also a few new buildings (BELA, Solaris Lofts, 295J) that opened up in Bergen Lafayette by Liberty State Park, and since you’ll be driving, the distance from the PATH won’t matter. And those buildings might be even cheaper than my last apartment. I think if the savings in rent and taxes outweigh the amount in tolls, the move would be worth it. Bayonne does have new buildings, but it’s a little too far from anything (JC restaurants, cafes, etc.) for me.
Sure, no problem! For the street parking permit, there's an online application where you submit proof of your residency in JC, your car registration with the address and license (I think), and they'll approve it and you pay online. You can either have it mailed or request to pick it up in person. I also think you can apply in person too
I know this place and may be moving in next month! Wont reveal the building name for privacy sakes but I recognize the view and the building, color, windows, side panel 😂
Yep lol I watched this building get built from the ground up and it didn’t take long at all! I was always iffy about moving here just because of how fast it went up. Do you feel like the construction was “cheaply” made or pretty solid? I currently live in a luxury building but I’ve noticed the ceiling peeling and things breaking. The walls are also super thin.
This is really helpful ! Would 1500-1600 for one bedroom be decent in Jersey city? What others parts would you also recommend? I will be commuting to downtown nyc.
Hey I’m from Boston too, you know how we have mass health, does NJ have something like that, because now with mass health it’s free for me and my kids.
I want to move to a luxury building in JC but I have a car. If your building offers parking, you're not eligible for street parking in JC and most luxury buildings have parking available which means me paying +$250/mo just for parking. Hoboken might be my better bet
@@carlapslv Carla, hope all is well! I’m Still on the hunt for a JC apt w/o parking in building so I qualify for street parking. Would you be able to share the name of your old building that didn’t have garage parking? Any others you know in JC would be much appreciated! Thank you!!
Please someone help me understand how I can move to NJ from Upstate NY. I have two degrees in criminal Justice and human service. I only make about 50,000 here in Upstate NY. I don't know how I would be able to live on that income in NJ. I have tried to look into jobs in NJ and they start off at 40,000 Any suggestions are welcomed.
Honestly for the CRJ field, your best bet is looking for a job in nyc. CRJ jobs pay significantly less in NJ. Look at criminal justice/social justice non profits in the boroughs, there are many! And some pay very well. There are other areas commutable to the city beyond Jersey city as well, such as Kearny, Harrison (which has a nice path station). I’ve been commuting to nyc from NJ for the past 6 years & has never been a problem.
Tbh for the year I was taking it before COVID, I never had an issue. It’s not so many lines like the MBTA has, so definitely less room for error, but it’s super quick during peak hours. However, I know with the recent snowstorm, they had some issues that day and the morning after.
For safety reasons I don’t think it’s a good idea and people on here trying to tell her where she live at by a view of a window pretty crazy if you ask me can’t trust people it’s not cool
For some people leaving this area and moving out west is a dream fulfilled. Clean air, open spaces, no crowds, no traffic jams. Cost of living much lower. I moved to New Mexico for a few years. It's nice. But being from J.C., Bayonne, I couldn't adjust. So I'm back where I belong
@@Dinnier. Boulder County CO my home tax is $2800 a year no traffic, fresh air, clean streets, trils by my house and mountains 2 miles away. Parking evrywere and free, I really downgrade from JFK blv. :)
