London is by far one of the EASIEST Cities to get around in being a tourist. I have to say, I'm not big on cities but when I manage to find my way to London I quite enjoy it. Also being Australian sometimes when you're travelling England is a great place to cure a bit of homesickness. Many similarities in grocery stores etc

Hello Hannah. This is your Mum & Dad's friend from Manchester. Lovely video. Also looove your Vegas video. Just a comment on the London one about making friends. As you noted, not everyone will have a ready-made set of friends when moving to London. And everyone is not as socially engaging as you, undoubtedly picking new friends up left right and centre :-) I would suggest people moving somewhere new can meet people by doing voluntary work (win-win), doing an evening class (like minded people with similar interests), join a gym with classes or partake in another hobby. I actually made most of my good friends in Manchester when I had children. I am NOT however suggesting people have babies to make friends!!! Anyway great stuff, well done. Danielle x

This comes from someone who has lived and worked in London all his life. If you want some where cheap to eat, head to busy main roads where there are a lot of offices and a lot of restaurants (e.g. Upper Street). During the hours of 12:00-14:00 near enough all of them do a special lunch time deal where either some or all of their menu goes from £8-£20 down to a flat £5. (obviously to attract as many office staff in as possible when there is loads competition around them). It's allowed me to try out loads of places that would otherwise be out of my price range. Obviously doesn't help if you wan't to eat later in the day but worth doing anyways (also, if you stand on the left of the escalator or in the way of the barriers in the tube then it's your own fault for being knocked over, everyone for themselves when it comes to the tube)

Moving in London is tough! Spare room is great but it really is an spur of the moment decision when you get to the flat. You don't really have a chance to think it over. Most of the viewings are open viewings. I'd recommend getting there earlier than they say because it's pretty much first come first serve.

This was a really useful video! One thing I'd like to add for people wanting to move to London is that you don't have to live in central London to experience its perks. I live in a suburb of London with super easy tube and bus links into central london and a similar yet more relaxed atmosphere, which, though it's not exactly cheap, is more affordable and a great way to delve into the fast-paced London life but not get lost in it. Still, loved the video!

Tips for living in/visiting Melbourne (mostly around the CBD): - The rent is super super super expensive, I know people who've had to have 3 part time jobs to maintain their weekly rent. Make sure you live near a tram stop if you want to live around the city, it will make life so much easier. - For a quick, easy and cheap lunch that isn't complete crap, try going to the Vic Market and ordering a Borek - they're only $3 and really good portions for the price. - Don't go to starbucks for coffee, go to Gloria Jeans or a local cafe - tip: more than $4 for a small size is too expensive. - Keep in mind that everything is expensive in Melbourne but also, if you're foreign keep track of the conversion. - Indie places to shop that aren't to expensive are the classic Salvation Army op shops but also Savers - lifesavers - The transport passes/card is called Myki, transport isn't too expensive, the CBD tram called the city loop is a free zone, so you don't need to touch on, but if you're planning on going further outside of the city loop, make sure you touch on so you don't get booked once you're outside the city loop. Basically listen to the robot lady announcements on the tram. - Two art galleries you can visit are: National Gallery of Victoria, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art - Not everything in Australia is as close as it seems, there's no such thing as a day trip to Sydney or Brisbane, you have to fly those places (all though there is a train that goes to Sydney that takes basically the whole day). - St Kilda is kinda dodgy, but is still none-the-less a p cool beach to go to! - You can literally have 4 seasons in one day, I'm not just saying this, recently we set a national record of the most fluctuated day of weather. Quite a few times there have been days that started off as 2 degrees Celsius and peaked at 25. -Additionally do not underestimate the weather of Melbourne, it is definitely not all sunshine. - If you're hoping for a nice bush experience try out Warrandyte, it's about a 30-40 minute drive from the city in Melbourne's east and is a nice place to eat baked goods by the river a go for a good walk and also the cutest gimmicky shops. -Tip: Every first Saturday of the month they have a cute small market. -Kmart is where to buy cheap everything

I moved to London from Madrid, Spain a year ago and to be honest, although the first three months were tough, now there's no other place I'd rather be. It's big, it makes me feel there are new thing to discover and learn every day. There is an incredible mix of cultures and that makes it so much more interesting. Also, one of the things I liked the most is how I can do whatever I want to do because there is infinite possibilities of doing ANYTHING (from jobs to courses). Be brave and you will not regret it.

Advise too: anywhere near a tube will be expensive whether that's London Bridge or fucking Morden. Chances are you will be broke af. However check Crossrail stops because development is being done and you may still be able to get in? I'm not sure, they're a bit pricey too

Great video. I am a Londoner myself and its my birthtown that will always be in my heart wherever I go. In the recent years, public transport has been vastly improved with new tube trains, buses as well as the London Overground Network. Although I no longer live in London. I still visit Acton regularly to meet up with my friends there and I was born in Acton as well. Here is a like from me.

Loved this video! In complete honesty, moving to London would be my worst nightmare. Too busy, expensive etc. I've been many times and always feel exhausted when I go home back to the midlands. I want to move to a coastal city like Brighton and leave London as 'that crazy place that I visit sometimes and do fun stuff in'. It keeps it a special place rather than becoming my everyday. But I'm sure this was very helpful for those unlike myself. Great video Hannah! I'm glad you've found somewhere you love to live in. Everyone deserves that! xxx

Great video. Lovely advice. Gutted though you never mentioned cycling. I am a huge advocate of getting around by bicycle. I live 52 minutes (according to East Midlands Trains) from St. Pancras. The vast majority of the time, as long as it is not pouring down, I use a Boris bike (or bring my own) to get where I need to go. As long as you are savvy, it can cost just £2 for 24 hours. Great way to get the layout of the city into perspective, move around quickly, exercise, AND see the sights. :)

I live in Budapest. My advice: LEARN SOME HUNGARIAN. Even though it's a bit difficult, it is so useful, as not everyone speaks English. Also, be prepared for a lot of standing in line in offices. I've had to queue for my address card, student card, and residence permit thus far. Bring a book or something. Oh, and make sure your landlord gets your rent contract witnessed, as it makes the residence permit process easier.

I want to move to the UK, but not London because it's too expensive for me and a little too big. I like cities though, especially as I need my public transport and LGBT parties, but just a little more compact. I would want to have a good academic and literary environment. I also like being near the sea, but it's not a must. Does anybody have recommendations for cities (/universities) that would be good in the UK?

£65 a DAY doesn't even get you an amazing London flat to rent. Certainly not in the centre. Perhaps in the outer zones you could get a reasonable 2-bed place with tube access or good-train-access-and-busses (but probably not both).

I used to live in Paris and these tips apply too. Public transport is much cheaper though, particularly if you are a student of any kind, you can get reductions on transport for many reasons (unemployed, student, elderly, young, disabled, etc) so look it up, it is worth it. There are two kinds of underground trains there is the "metro" and the "RER", if you have the choice you should use the metro, RER is more complicated and less pleasant I think, but the RER also goes farther into the countryside so if it is where you want to go you don't have much of a choice. Rent is bad, but if you are a student there usually is a list of addresses that go from one promotion to the next so you can ask older students where they are staying and if they have any advice, but do it in advance. You can go to leboncoin.fr to find places for rent (but don't give any money before signing a contract). If you have any other question don't hesitate to ask.

Great video!! I've lived in the suburbs all my life & for anyone considering London but find it too expensive try looking at places nearer the edges but with a tube station, it's marginally cheaper (although still pretty expensive), you get to escape the crowds of central when you get home but you can still easily travel around xxx

If you are looking for a place to live with roommates and you all want your own rooms, but housing is too expensive to do that, try finding a place that might not be listed as a 3 bedroom, but could work as 3 separate bedrooms (or 2 or 4, whatever). For example: I moved into a two bedroom with three other people. The dining room was it's own room with a door. So that became the third bedroom. It was almost identical to the bedrooms except it didn't have a closet.

A lot of this advise also applies to Aberdeen as it is really expensive here and the housing market/rent is ridiculous as we also have the riggers to compete with (those that work on the oil rigs). With the oil industry being so influential up here everything is so expensive, but you don't necessarily have to rely on public transport if you live near the centre as everywhere is in a walkable distance. But if you do decide to take the bus (as we have no tubes etc) they can be expensive and sometimes unreliable so I would always recommend getting the bus at the time before the one that will get you to a place by a certain time (does that even make sense?)

For New York, join groups on Facebook like Gypsy Housing NYC, there's a ton of affordable housing offered on there. The people that post in those groups are typically looking for a new roommate and don't advertise on apartment hunting websites. Sometimes, those things are just for subletting, but that can be nice if you're abroad and not able to look at places until you get there.

Jasmine Jones The only problem is that obtaining a visa isn't very easy for a US citizen. 😕 You need to be sponsored by a company in order to work there and they need to show that you were the most qualified and they couldn't find someone from the UK to fill the position. It isn't something that can be easily done right out of college, it will take getting connections and experience. If you have the opportunity, study abroad in London and make connections and get your name out there. I have a friend that's going to grad school at the Uni of Westminster right now and she's able to work a part time job at Brooks Brothers (where she wants to work corporate eventually) and when she's done with her degree, she will have a much higher chance of getting sponsored by a company. When I moved to London for school, I fell into the swing of things very quickly. There wasn't much of an adjustment period and the only culture shock for me was the lovely accents all around me. I found that things were fairly similar to the US, so the transition was very easy in my experience.

This goes for Berlin - some cooperatives have special deals exclusively for university students so the competition while apartment hunting is a lot smaller and the apartments are usually cheaper too. I noticed that lots of student who are desperately looking for a place are completely unaware of these deals. Maybe different countries and cities offer similar deals.

I think that if you make the decision to move somewhere like London where the rent and the transport are really expensive on their own you should know that probably you will have to sacrifice something like going out often or eat out [do people really eat out so often? It's like a very rare thing for me. I just go to the grocery and cook.] Also alcohol! I think that if you want to move somewhere like London and you are not the richest person you need to ask yourself which are your priorities.

I live in Brooklyn right now and our monthly subway pass is about the same in USD (it's 116.50 for an unlimited pass) but the thing pays for itself and I only work out of my apartment three days a week (I have a weird job situation where I have two part time jobs, one I work from home and one I go to). Buying it forces me to leave my apartment more, too! And I'll just do free/inexpensive things like take a walk in central park or prospect park and get a coffee or juice or something and sit with a book. I have a GREAT apartment but the neighborhood is...there's no curb appeal, let's put it that way. But it's pretty safe, actually. Anyway if anyone needs NYC advice I'm ya girl.

+Jes Lyons Good point: I lived in London with a monthly travel pass. I'd forgotten how it does make you just want to go somewhere, anywhere. One day, we even traveled to the ends of the DLR lines, because we could (there were fewer lines then).

if you're into it, you totally should make a video similar to this talking about living in Brooklyn - what to expect, tips, rent, food, costs etc. I've seen so many people here talking about wanting to move to NYC & we'd all (or me at least) would really appreciate it ^_^

I'm in London a month today! Luckily my family is here and I grew up here so finding a place to stay etc. is no problem for me. However, everyone I grew up with are all settled down now and I need to find new people to hang out with. I know it will take time but I have been going to RU-vid things like Happy Hour and meet ups, so hopefully the people I met might become friends in time :)

You made this so interesting!! I really liked visiting London in December, and the uni course I want to do is only available in Lincoln or London (I live in Scotland) so I didn't even really consider it as a real option until now due to leaving my friends and money. Hmm you make a pretty convincing case.....

I know I couldn't handle living in a big city like London, but I do want to visit there, so it was nice to see different parts. I also realized I recognized someone's name who asked a question (who is a RU-vidr I like), and I squealed involuntarily BECAUSE I AM A FANGIRL AND I HAVE NO SHAME.

Great advice Hannah, I lived in London for uni and am looking to move back but not being there currently is proven to be a right struggle. As you say as soon as a decent/cheap room becomes available it is snapped up so quickly and it is so frustrating.

+savannah seaton sorry for the late reply i didnt see the notification but the outer london boroughs are: Barking and Dagenham Barnet Bexley Brent Bromley (biggest borough and stretches into central london) Croydon Ealing Enfield Haringey Harrow Havering Hillingdon Hounslow Kingston upon Thames Merton Newham Redbridge Richmond upon Thames Sutton Waltham Forest in my opinion the nicest ones to live in are havering bexley barnet parts of waltham forest ealing richmond upon thames and parts of redbridge but if you want something affordable try barking and dagenham or croydon, havering is cheaper too but the prices are getting higher the fastest best links to central london are Newham Brent ealing redbridge waltham forest barking and dagenham hillingdon has heathrow so if you want to be near airports the best boroughs are waltham forest (stanstead) Newham (city) croydon (gatwick) havering (southend) barnet (luton) havering and croydon are closest to the sea and alongside bromely, richmond and hillingdon they enjoy lots of open green space

This is VERY accurate. Good job on the video, I appreciate it didn't sugar-coat certain things about London but still exacerbated the positives. Funny thing is, I'm sort of on the other side - I was born in London (Streatham, saarrfff laahdaaan etc), and live basically on the edge of the city, and do a lot of work and hanging out in the city itself - went to uni there too (Greenwich). Since first travelling out and about in the city age 15, I've loved it and loved the energy, but as of late it's kinda been too much, and I had a friend who worked in the city and the constant stress and intensity of the commute and expensive rent rates burnt her out, so she's moved to Preston. I'm considering something similar, in my case Norwich - of the times I've been there, it feels like a nice, quirky city, slower-paced and less intense than London but with all the interesting artsy aspects you get in London, like Brick Lane, Camden Market, etc. It's either that, or go all out and head to Australia haha! People who live in either Norwich or Oz, holla, I'd love to hear what it's like to actually live there day by day, as it's VERY different to just visiting!

Love love loved this! I've visited London twice and I loved it! I really fell in love with it, and I can soo imagine myself living there, but the rent and pollution does bother me. Alternatively I'd love live in Rome because like you, I am a history GEEK, and that place never seices to impress me. Really good job on the video, it's so well made and an original idea! :D
