No mention of the lack of affordable housing, the homelessnes and poverty, and the fact that there is only one walk-in clinic to serve the entire city with a population of over 100,000 people. There's a very small town feel with many independantly owned businesses closed 2 days week and very restricted hours on the days they are open. Good luck finding a place to go for dinner on New Years Eve. If you can tolerate all the above, you will get to enjoy all the amazing scenery and hiking paths. Remember that no matter where you live in Nanaimo, you are likely no more than a 15 drive to the Pacific ocean and a huge selection of staggeringly beautiful beaches and camping spots. When you're ready to leave you are likely less than a 25 minute drive to international airport and even less to the Duke Point ferry terminal with connections to many of the surrounding islands, other coastal cities and the mainland. Remember to book a reservation when taking the ferry to avoid lineups and delays.

You have a beautiful town. I visited last week and stayed downtown. People so nice, very clean, great food, and so much today. I think it's special.

What's strange about Nanaimo is that the locals have very little curiosity about people, places or things. A very insular people, with a touch of xenophobia. I can't say I would recommend it for living, or less you yourself have little desire for socializing, and want to live a life with a very limited world view.

@@daves77 Nanaimo is not as bad as many other places look at Victoria and Vancouver. The problem is everywhere not just Nanaimo.

Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain rain and more dark dreary days with yet more rain…and damn bone chilling damp cold thats Nanaimo 6 months of the year! You forgot to mention that. But!!!! the trails are wickedly awesome, with thick lush green plant life…just be sure to get a rain suit! Truly a nice place to visit! nice to go back to the sunshine anywhere else in Canada as well though. British Columbia, BC = bring cash! Facts!
