A neighborhood friend's mower won't start. Watch was we perform basic troubleshooting. Will it run again?? This fix works for me 90% of the time. What about the other 10%?? Watch Part 2 here: • Mower Won't Start - Ho...
I'm glad so many people are having success by using this method!! For the few people who haven't had luck with this, check out my newer video for the same type of engine. I'll teach you how to clean the plastic carburetor and show you where it's likely to be clogged at. Keep commenting, I love hearing about your success. Hey, yesterday my lawnmower had some issues. First it started turning off while cutting grass, so I notice leaking oil, and next smoke. Do you know what it could be?
DUDE!! I was just getting ready to buy another lawn mower this morning. Tried this method and my lawn mower is running like it never stopped!! Thanks for this!!
Great advice! It worked for me. Mower sat all winter with gas in the tank because I'm an idiot. It wouldn't even turn over when pulling the cord.... NOTE: It took about 10 minutes of spray, try it, spray, try it - alternating between carb cleaner and starter fluid. On multiple attempts it would run for a few seconds then sputter and stop. My wife was sure I didn't know what the heck I was doing and as each minute passed, I grew increasingly worried she'd was right. Then it caught and I strutted around the lawn - with the mower.
"Mower sat all winter with gas in the tank because I'm an idiot." - I think that's why most of us are here lol. I initially thought it was the spark plug, and my wife was watching me while I replaced it and started losing confidence in my abilities when it didn't work. This time I am going to wait until she's out of the house to fix it first, then I'll set it up and get her to watch as I miraculously repair it. Husbanding is a fine art!
The waiting period is an excellent point! It's rare that this time of year you could drop off a mower and have it looked at immediately. Mower shops are swamped. Glad it worked for you too!
yeah... 5 weeks waiting is ridiculous. The grass would have been 1 yard tall. LOL. My mower started then stopped after 1 min. I spent $17 for a new carburetor and replaced it and it works now.
@@liuhongqian I found it and bought it. When I have time I'm still going to take the old carb apart and clean it, but right now I don't have the time. Thanks for the info.
Honestly man thank you so much. As a young man who's father never taught me these sorts of things it's incredibly helpful that there's guys like you on the internet showing us how to do some of these basic things. I was close to buying a new mower but you saved me over $200 with this short video. Thank you so much.
These engines get thrown out all the time and just need cleaning. If you are going to throw your mower out and buy a new one, I suggest looking at RU-vid videos and learn how to clean everything and the basic steps of diagnostics first. What do you have to lose? 10 buck says you take your time, clean it up and save 100 bucks!
Thank you so much for this video! I have been looking through many videos and have tried everything under the sun ( or so I thought) and thought I was never going to get my mower to run. Until I found this video. I got my mower running after almost 4 years of sitting. Thank you again.
Hello friend. My lawnmower wouldn't start. I watch one of your videos. Did exactly what you said. Now my lawnmower is running like a champ. You save $$$$ from buying a new lawnmower. Thanks again!
Awesome video....about a month ago I took my lawn mower into our local repair shop because it wouldn’t start. When I first got it back it started fine but it got tougher to start every time until the point I could not get it to start at all. I wasn’t going to take it back to the shop for another $80 so I searched out RU-vid and found your video. Well, I just saved myself $74 dollars by watching your video and going out and buying carb cleaner and starter fluid. Your solution was spot on and I can’t thank you enough. Got my mower fired up using your tips. Keep the great videos coming!
I just wanted to thank you, I clogged my lawn mower last time I used it and it will not start so that I can fix my yard for the first time this year. I went to Walmart and bought oil and carb cleaner and it works. You saved me from buying a new one/repairs. Thanks again!
That’s what I like to hear!!! No one wants to spend money on a mower repair. Now you can spend it on something better. Thanks for sharing your success!
Well... I watched the video 2 hrs ago. Went to Wally world and got me a can of starting fluid, a carb cleaner and a new plug just in case. Voila.. Runs like new. I even noticed that my throttle cable was really hard to pull, ran some WD40 inside the cable and sprayed the spring on the throttle body. Again super happy. And yes I even washed it and armorAll the tires. Thank you
Have a different lawn mower. Brother bought a brand new carburetor, this and that and after watching your video all we needed were the two cans. Two thumbs up.
Thanks. I got an old mower with my new house and I'd left mine behind a couple houses ago. I replaced the black oil, and gave it an air filter and it worked fine until this winter after a month or so. Finally put a new spark plug and WD everything as i also sharpened the blade but it start and stalled like your video. Luckily the former owner who never did maintenance on the mower had 2 cans on Carb Cleaner. Did what you did just with that and no Quick Start and it did the trick.
Thank you! I cleaned my sponge air filter with Dawn, and then sprayed Carb Cleaner into the big hole and got my mower started and working again. Had to spray in the hole 3 times. Thank you!
Sweet! Some people like to make this seem more complicated than it really is. With some basic foundational knowledge, it’s really not that hard. I’m glad it worked for you too! Thanks for sharing your success!! 😀
Awesome fix!!! THANK YOU!!! Saved my day and $$$. same mower, same old fuel issue that i did not winterize, but mine did not even start. Like he showed.... some starter and some carb cleaner.... after about 20-30 sprays it started to work. THANK YOU !!!
That's great to hear, Dan! I am glad that it worked for you too. I believe it's a common problem with these. Fortunately with some very basic supplies, you can fix it on your own for cheap. Thanks for sharing your success!
Thank you for this video! All the other videos had you take the mower apart but you, you just made it more convenient and easy for me lol. Literally spent $2 for a carburetor spray to fix the problem.
Thank you! I get a lot of comments of "you aren't doing it right", or "you need to take it apart"... The whole purpose of this video is to show people that you DON'T always have to do that. This cheap and easy fix works for a lot of people and should be the first thing to try. Glad it worked for you too!
Glad your method worked. This is good for people that don't want to take apart everything. My method would have consisted of checking the fuel, air filter, spark and then pulling the carburator off and cleaning it. I'm surprised you were able to pull this off, but I bet the problem comes back. Something is dirty in the fuel system and needs to be completely referbished though cleaning and or part replacement. If I don't get it to start in 3 or 4 pulls, inspection and removal of parts will happen so I can save my shoulder. LOL! Glad you got it working!
Yea I fix and sell mowers and riding mowers but usually when I get them, they are so badly abused and dirty, that I just get straight into cleaning the carb or even replace the carb and after that they usually start pretty quickly and run fairly good. Most of the time it is the carb that is very dirty but there is usually nothing wrong with the spark. 1 out of 15 mowers have something more complicated wrong with them, (I can fix but just takes more time) like valve adjustment, flywheel key, etc.
It's pretty funny how you totally owned the issue, like a god of lawnmower troubleshooting! ;)) Really a great style of solving things, especially the "rule out" method you're using which finally brought you to the conclusion it had to be a fuel issue, bravo!
Thanks for the great feedback! I appreciate it! When troubleshooting, I'm kind of a "divide and conquer" kind of guy. Rule out what's not relevant and focus on the most probable issues. If you were having a similar issue, I hope this helped you get it fixed!
Your instructions worked. The reason why mine died was bcz it had dirt in the tank which filtered into the carb. I did exactly what you said & it worked with a new spark plug. Also filtered out both fuel cans. You’re the best tks! 👍
Wow you did one of the best tutorials I've seen.. I really appreciate the end of your video.. the way you simplified it gave me the motivation to keep going... After almost giving up... Bingo Delaringo!
Thanks so much! I'm very glad that you found it helpful! That's the best part of making these "how to" type of videos. I like to help people save money by fixing things on their own.
I literally replaced my carburetor and it didn’t fix the problem. I came across this video and repeated the steps and it fixed it. Thanks for saving me a bunch of money!
This was a really helpful video. You saved me a tank of gas. Was about to drain the tank assuming i had bad (old) fuel - didn't think to try the carb cleaner on my own, though I had it on the shelf. Thay was it - started with one pull after that and a minute of waiting. Appreciate you showing all the stuff that didn't work right away, and you sticking with it. THANK YOU
It was rather funny to watch you go thru all the steps that I did minus the kids , but the continues use of the starting fluid was very helpful, wish I could get back those 3 i hours I lost to fiddling around with the carburetor! Thank you
Thank you for putting out this video, I had sat there for almost 3 hours and couldn't get the clog out of the carb and finally after watching your video and blowing it out I got it to run continuously. I had already ran carb cleaner through it etc but blowing it out did the trick plus some more carb cleaner
Accidentally I put diesel in my mover ! I tried everything I got dirty even hit it with the hummer !!! I was about to gave up bit after watching the video I fixed it took me 4 weeks ))) thank you very much for the info
Worked like a charm! I was in the process of taking the carburetor apart and cleaning it until I came across your video. I decided to try the carb spray first in addition to changing the spark plug & gas. It fired up after 3 pulls! Thanks for the video! 👍🏾
Great video. This guy has patience! I'll try this out. We pull and pull and our B&S just won't start. Cleaned the carburator didn't matter. So I'll try these sprays. Thank you sir.
Thank you so much for this video,my 90yr old neighbour asked if I could help when his B/S mower wouldn,t start I followed your advice and his face was a picture when it started first pull.
Thanks for this video! My mower had stopped working so i bought another one and eventually that one stopped working as well, and decided instead of buying ANOTHER mower Lets learn how to fix it! and now they are all working great!
That's awesome! Glad to hear you got them all going again! Thanks for sharing your success! I guess you could always sell the one you don't want, or keep a spare!
Thank you. Left my mower in the garage for two years and after changing oil, air filter and spark plug and draining carburetor still no dice. Shot of carburetor cleaner and she was back. Really appreciate it.
@@ox3289 Hey buddy, this mower has been starting and running perfectly since this video was made over a year ago. To your comment of mowers not having a timing chain... well duh. Did you realize if the coil isn’t aligned right to the flywheel, that is a form of timing? Guess not.
@@ox3289 Lol. Anger issues? Are you this attached to a $50 lawn mower? Timing chains were never mentioned but obviously spark has to happen at a certain point in the rotation of this 4-stoke engine. That is called timing. I’m not the one acting like a fool in your comment section. Lol. Thank you, come again.
I truly thank you for your video! The beginning steps are trouble shooterS and when I removeD the filter inwhich was totally dirty and then sprayed the cardorator... SUCCESS! I was quoted $80 to do the repair! COST ME LESS THAN $4/. THANK YOU!
This pass Sat ! I did some trouble shooting on a Briggs & Stratton lawnmower. Followed all your instructions to the wire ! One thing that primer bulb should not have a hole in the center .Finished just before 10:00 pm Started about 2:00 pm Sat. She is working amazely well...Thanks dude..
Ok was working on exactly the same machine and engine. Did everything he recommended and nothing just started for 5 seconds from starter fluid. To make a long story short. Follow all his recommendations but first take handle of screwdriver and gently tap bottom of carburetor. That and a squirt of starter fluid in filter will have you up and running in seconds. 👍
Thank You Thank You. I watched the video because I borrowed my neighbors Log Splitter with a 6 HP Briggs and Stratton Engine after 2 weeks of splitting the engine wouldn't start. I had an old can of Starter Fluid tried that no good. So you said 85% of problems are usually the fuel. I went to the Auto Supply bought Carb cleaner and Starter Fluid. Sprayed it first couple of minutes nothing but than BAM it started and I let it run about 15 minutes and runs great now. Thank You and Love RU-vid
Heck yeah! I always try this method before doing a full rebuild. I find this works a high percentage of the time for mowers that ran one year, and then the next year it won't. Glad it helped you too!
My mower almost the same model but a push mower died , checked the air filter removed the foam filter (I cleaned it in with dawn detergent last week) pulled the rope it started then died about 20 times, gas is new stocked up on ethanol free gas from WaWa, I pulled the spark plug and it was fouled "Loose" tried to clean it with sand paper, ran carb cleaner through it before I put it back in, still run and die Went to Walmart bought a new spark plug in the Lawn Mower section checked fit it was a adapted version but correct. Install spark plug same thing run then die tried about 10 times, no luck. Then followed your and my advice about the carb cleaner but only carb cleaner I took the mower and set it on its side and filled it with about 10 blasts of carb cleaner right in to the carburetor, GUESS WHAT It started ran and I mowed my entire 2 yards I own 2 houses next to each other big lawns!! Made my day, and a great video to help us Lawn Mower amateurs!!! Thanks from Paradise " Poinciana Florida" The Burbs!!!!!
Thanks Man! I didn't even need starter fluid. A couple sprays of carb cleaner in the intake did the trick. After spraying the intake it would run for about 5 seconds, after 3 times i started giving it a little carb cleaner to keep it going. Whatever was fouling the carb was cleared within a mnute and it ran fine after that.
I’ve got 10 mowers waiting to be fixed. It’ll likely be a few months before I start on those. I’m in full on snowblower repair and snow removal video mode at the moment. More of this coming! Thanks Jerome.
Thank you very much ... a very useful video. Just a matter of being logical and having the confidence to do it! I am off to get some Carb Cleaner and Starter Fluid. I hope that little rain shower was enough to clean those stains of your lovely white driveway?
My Briggs and Stratton is only 1 year old and won't start this summer. I tried with the old fuel at first then tipped the mower upside down to drain the old fuel and replaced it with new fuel. I haven't checked the plug yet but do you have any tips I could try instead of spending 100s on repairs?
It is most likely that your carburetor has a clogged passage. I have other small engine repair videos on my channel that you can check out, and within a week or so, I plan to upload a newer video on carburetor cleaning. 85% of the time, using a combination of starting fluid and carburetor cleaning works for me, but sometimes you have to disassemble the carburetor and clean the passages a little more thoroughly.
You can use brake cleaner in place of carb cleaner and starting fluid if you want to. You can also spray cleaner into the carb through the fuel line to try to dissolve the goo in the fuel bowl. / If the mower will start when you spray into the carb, you know it's a fuel delivery issue and there's no reason to take out the plug. / A flooded mower will start with a few pulls unless you've drowned it. Most mowers today run really lean so they burn off excess fuel pretty quickly.
Most people put yard equipment away incorrectly. The problem is usually the low /idle speed jet gets plugged from the fuel in the jet drying up. When done, run the carb dry before long time storage.
Hi I'm 62 female and it worked lol My neighbor came over and checked the sparkplug which he said was flooded he sprayed it with the starter fluid it didn't start the we used the both the carb cleaner and the starter fluid started right up Thank you
