I have a rotary brush cutter and finish mower for my L3901. The finish mower is nice for pastures. I hardly used the rotary mower except when it had been severely overgrown the first time.
A flail mower is a cross between a rotary mower and a finish mower. Thus, the flail mower will have a better finished look, but they are much more expensive. Depends on what your need is.

It looks like the flail makes a solid mat of cut grass on top which would result in killing all the grass underneath. Is this correct? If it was me, I would wait a few days and run over it again with the flail to break-up and disperse the cut-off grass.
I have had both at one point and since have opted for the flail mower (63”) as it cuts nicer for my lawn. You’re correct about the flail mower not reaching back as far as that is what I did with my 5’ brush hog cleaning up all the fence lines and over growth. Now that it’s all where I wanted (and since I lost my brush hog in a barn fire) I rely on my flail mower. I’m surprised you found your kubota having issue with it, I have 3025E and found it able to cut my pasture at the end of the seasons with no slow down, you just need to watch the rpm/speed as inclines have more problems than cutting height. Personally, I liked the look of your flail better…but…it’s only your opinion that counts. The big difference you would see would be with sharp blades on both: the brush hog would “still” just beat down the grass and your flail mower would cut even better. Have a good day!
Nice comparison. A flail will always leave a nicer cut with better mulched up debris. That comes at a price of consuming more HP. Two passes with a rotary cutter will get results sorta similar to a flail… A lot more rotational momentum in a rotary cutter blade once it’s moving, and they don’t stop for a while! Another flail advantage is maneuverability - it’s a much shorter rig than a rotary cutter. I think the downfall of the flail is price and maintenance - it’s a lot of knives to replace when the time comes… plus, I don’t think you can cut 2” saplings like I can with my Woods BB60.30 rotary cutter, which I’ve been known to do maintaining trails in the woods 😆.
The only reason that I’d really like a flail mower would be to mow the ditch banks in our private neighborhood and along the highway frontage of our neighborhood. The county cuts it on the highway once a year but it gets downright dangerous turning out onto the road when the grass gets pretty tall. That’s however prohibitively expensive right now because I’d need to add another rear remote and then buy a flail that compatible with hydraulic angling. That’s big money and I’m already dealing with the recent purchase of our L4060 and all its attachments. So I’m stuck with doing my best with my husqvarana brush trimmer and trying my best to not fall in the ditch. 😂 Maybe when we are closer to paying off the tractor, only 7 years to go. At least my oldest will be big enough to make him go do it in a couple years.
