GingerMan Raceway is one of the most technical tracks in the country. It is certainly not the friendliest track for a 4,200 pound Mustang with no front aero, stock 20” wheels, and a stock 8” ride height. So, our Friday test & tune mission was to figure out the braking zones and turn-in points for our 725whp lawn mower.
In the morning session, we learned that our Archetype Racing Gladiator splitter creates soooo much downforce that, despite its super-rigidity, it cannot be run without support rods. Once we hit 130mph on the back stretch, and 120mph on the uphill front stretch, the splitter would pull the OEM attachment points down so hard that the nose of the splitter hit the ground. Talk about downforce!
Splitter removed, we headed out for the 4th session Friday afternoon with a lot to learn, quickly. Having been to this track only once before (in HPDE school), we needed to learn when to hit the brakes, when to start the turn-in, and how much throttle the rear tires would hold on exit. Fortunately, if you are going to be testing the limits, GingerMan is a great track to do so because of the huge run-off areas. And test the limits we sure did! Our first grass mowing experience came at the downhill, off-camber turn 10… a turn that punishes over-aggressive driving. Our next lawn-care move was in turn 5. The 5-6 combo is very technical and presents several lines that can be taken. As seen in the grass cutting move herein, both the line and speed were more than this turn could take.
