There is a big gap between software plugins in the DAW (VST/AU/AAX) and hardware, the creative process degrades when you are forced to do things in series with the mouse.
Designing a sound on a hardware synthesizer is so different than doing the same on a software one.
The notion of reaching out and grabbing the control is more natural and moving two controls at the same time allows you to try things that are just not possible with the mouse.
I’m sure that if you are a fellow music producer you know what I am talking about.
Of course, we have midi controllers, however, with a regular midi controller you are limited in the number of parameters you can control and then you need to mark them on the actual controller with tape or an overlay. It’s just not practical.
MPMidi is a combination of a hardware controller and software that runs in your DAW as a plugin, to enable controlling each plugin as a hardware unit.

I've been pipe-dreaming similar solutions myself - but along the lines of getting a Chinese OLED manufacturer to produce OLED displays with holes drilled in them for the encoders. The way these encoders are mounted on top of perspex is elegant. requires very shallow ones which I hadn't come across. well done. Hope this comes to market. A touch sensitive screen option would be cool too although not everyone would need or afford that.

What I fear is that the encoders doesn't have high resolution so you have to have a ton of interpolation.

I wold like to have a midi controler without big screen, just at least 32 encoders with smaller screens to show automatically parameters. We have big screens and I don't see any major reason to have another big screen . Anyway I need to try this new Idea.

Actually a similar kind of thing -but missing the middle display - and produced in a EURORACK compatible format would be really useful too. Where the labels are - for example *underneath* the circles for each knob to save space. Having LED displays offers so much potential for making the labelling and readout for parameters clear and from a distance - particularly for those with bad eyesight when letters are large.

Would have loved this as an app on iPad/Android tablet with add on controller. It would be great to use the screen to touch everything and use the knobs (and evt faders) to control the vst running on pc or mac. Would instantly buy an iPad if it would become available :)

Ok now i understand what it is. It is same idea like NI komplete kontrol 2 nks which I own and don't really like. The reason it is simple. You have to open Mp Midi as plugin, and in that plugin you have to load other plugins which brings to many problems. It make thinks complicated. If you want to open different instrument for every instrument you have to load icon in DAW. When Logic pro introduced channel strips I was amazed with that and I switched from cubase immediately. Now this days almost every DAW has that future. We have created in years our presets with virtual instruments and plugins and icons which we can load instantly. And now we have to forget that and create presets plugin in plugin. Pfff. Plugins and presets are there you have just to find way to connect. I can't believe in 2020 we have no midi controlers to connect directly with plugins and make things easier. Prove me if I am wrong.
@emphatic001
@emphatic001 4 года назад
Great. It would be cool if it could be skinnable in addition to using backgrounds. This way, you could load up a Sylenth1 or a Spire and have all controls at the same place so you don't have to adjust where to look at the screen. And tiny plugin interfaces could be zoomed in without looking crap. But I guess that would mean having these companies involved. Also, sliders for ADSR controls would feel a lot more natural, I guess.

total game changer well done, cant wait for more details. ps maybe a smaller version the mini with say 5-10 encoders for fx control mainly. is this limited to 127 steps is there no new protocol to allow finer increments for controlling vst/vsti's?

@@FigittyFau If this thing or something like Synth master suggests - is released with open source code and API on Github it would allow people to come up with stuff like OSC etc.. The plugin mapping concept is very cool, if you like me work in Pro Tools. A dream come true. I'm mainly looking for a solution to control plugins like EQ and compressors, don't need a big screen for that, it's closer to an "analog feel" without another screen. (for me at least) Hopefully they will come up with a smaller version, with just knobs and a OLED text screen below. Great work though, I which you the very best! Regards. 👍

f you ever consider a version minus the plugin display and in a Eurorack pofrmat I would suggest releasing the software to drive these displays in some API form on GITHUB to allow developers and hackers to be able to customise things just how they want. This kind of thing hardware wise offers so much potential. For example for OEMS !

Sliders are more expensive. Also, they are absolute -- you must mechanically move them to sync them up with the value. Relative knobs are cheap, and you can sync them in software.

Design wise this is really bad. I totally dislike the knobs on the sides, top and bottom. Could you make it look like a real synth with a tiny display for the values and remove the vst screen entirely? If you do want to have a screen, why not add this as an extension to this controller and plug it in on the back, so you attach it to the controller? Kinda how a Minimoog looks. Where the keys are, is the synth with all the knobs. Where the knobs are is the screen that you can attach in the back as a separate buy.

This could be what i'm looking for and i'm really interested. It looks quite rudimentary though in terms of design. I'd really like more if the encoders were laid out in a standard synth format. The way the encoders are laid out doesn't really reference anything so it doesn't really relate to any particular interface. Having multiple plugins / controlling multiple plugins at once would be a nice feature. 4k monitor screen?
@mpmidi
@mpmidi 4 года назад
The layout of the controller is very important. Could have placed the encoders around and outside the controller's screen, or all 32 at the bottom of the screen, or don't use a screen at all. The placement of the encoders is practical, as it allows to map via the nearest distance to the controller parameter. For example, if the Cutoff filter is on the left upper side on a virtual synth, it makes sence to have the encoder near mapped onto that. Also, this layout is a kind of universal solution to control any plugin (effects and instruments) of any design/layout. With the custom image backgrounds, you can "group" encoders in the same manner that are grouped on the controlled plugin. If you look at any plugin's interface carefully you will see how the designer separated controls in different groups by using different colors or border lines. This makes it intuitive and easy to the eye. And the same concept can be replicated using this controller.
@palaHD
@palaHD 4 года назад
Yeah like a push but screen in the middle instead of pads,I do love this though but with that kind of implementation of the encoders won't it just be ludicrously priced ?
@MadelnMachines
@MadelnMachines 4 года назад
@@mpmidi It is indeed a difficult problem to solve. Perhaps a version could be designed where everything is laid out into the sections of a synth style interface - such a 4 knobs for Osc 1, 4 knobs for osc 2, 4 for Osc 3, 4 knobs for each envelope, 3 for each LFOs etc. In such a case i'm not sure a display would be needed. Then you can develop some sort of intuitive muscle memory of knowing where the parameters are intuitively. One thing that could be an idea is to have the background of each synth having a line / cable looking graphic that leads to the controls that you have mapped to show how the knob mappings relate to the plugin. I like the idea of having custom sections. One thing that could potentially work would be to split a plugins GUI into the various sections and have a corresponding section of knobs below each portion of the GUI to make it more universally applicable. Just throwing around ideas anyway. I like that finally you can get a midi controller that you are actually looking at the plugin whilst tweaking it rather than just focusing on the control which is completely visually disconnected from the interface you are controlling. I definitely think you're onto something and i'd love to give it a go if the price isn't too expensive. 4K or 2k screen resolution would definitely be appreciated as an option.

Another thought occurs.. when in musical "flow" mode - having to move eyes between the plugin display and the encoders and their displays is an added mental distraction. So for some workflows - particularly live - having instead attractive "skins" for the encoders and omitting the central display would be better. Specially if some creativity is put into making the information and encoder readouts dynamic and readable (KOMPLETE KONTROL makes virtually no use of the possibilities in its two LCD displays - a wasted opportunity by NI ) - simply the use of colour plus font styles for example. So s well as the above design I would seriously explore the euro rack possibilities more. And leave the central plugin bit for the computer display. It would also of course be much more compact - which is very often a key criterion.
