20+ years of making tracks and I've never used an MPC, but watching your workflow was an eye opener. Seems like a lot of fun! And I have to say, I love that you leave those "oh wait, I fucked up" moments in, AND show how to fix them. That's something essential that I think a lot of people leave out of their videos. I've known too many people that get discouraged when something weird happens and just throw their hands up rather than taking a deep breath and thinking about how to fix it.
Your “from scratch” takes never fail to fascinate me, mostly because I for myself find, um, basic techniques and tools I never got my head around. But watching you bringing it all together (and I love that you can laugh at the little glitches and mistakes) encourages me to dig into the “small” things. The basic stuff that you put in there so quickly and in an almost natural way motivates me to take a couple of steps back now and then and just learn/recall and become more familiar and comfortable it. It is always a pleasure to watch you creating these tracks! Thanks for sharing!
Mad respect for your fluency on all the gear you use in your videos. I can only imagine how much time and dedication it takes to get that comfortable with all this technology. Definitely feel that it's my biggest hurdle with making more music...learning and being able to harness the technology. Been working with the MPC One for a couple weeks now and your video shows me what can be possible with some dedication and persistence. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you for pushing MPC workflow to house/techno artists. Live II with the massive sampling, cv and two midi networks has been game changing for my writing.
Love your work on Novation Peak, your Sequential synth, the Eurorack exploits, the Oberheim Xpander etc etc... But Akai is where your real talent comes to life: the Music (yes - with a capital) you create on any MPC is just way better than on any other piece you play or have played. If Akai ever needs an hi-level senior MPC specialist...
My MacBook with all my DAWs on is getting a battery swap at the moment so I have been using my MPC one exclusively for the past 3 weeks. I absolutely think it’s a great machine and I think if it was one of the first things I bought, would have reduced the GAS I had when I started producing
Wish I would have went with MPC instead of maschine. I’ve had nothing but heartache with this thing. Hoping to find a used unit for decent price, or trade in some Roland gear and bite the bullet and buy one
@@mattryan6886 For me its somehow the exact opposit... I just cant get to grips with the MPC... Its so ilogical in many places... but maybe that just the way they always were... I dont know but I'm using it less and less.
@@ickebins6948 my maschine 2 software w/ mikro mk3 controller will not record any patterns. I can only get it to record when I use maschine as plugin in AB live and record to midi tracks. I’ve heard you can schedule w/ NI for customer service I’ve help
@@mattryan6886 The problem with the MPC is that the USB connection is not the best and lastly I tried to get my mpc to work with Ableton via ableton link... Nothing works, they add features that are buggy or dont work at all... Its just to much bullshit if you just want to make music from time to time. I'm now getting a Push2 and work with ableton.
could you make a video about how you would finish a song on the mpc and put the sequences together with good breakes and build ups including automations and stuff? making an excieting arrangement is kinda what i struggle the most with using the live.
Nice video, I tried to keep up but got mad lost in your workflow!!! You make it look so easy. I'm still learning on my Akai mpcx but thanks for the video. Keep them coming I'm a new subscriber.! PS that Retro Mpc live II is fire though!!!
Jo Ricky, first thanks for all your videos, I really enjoy them. Your vids inspired me to try out working more with samples, and I'm having a blast. But I'm having a hard time understanding all the licensing stuff that comes with samples. I don't know about others, but I would love a "post mortem"/"x time with" with tracklib video. You could talk about how it's working out for you and maybe how you handle releasing music that uses those samples.
pro tip: tune everything down to -6db. pro tip: use the PARA EQ effect on kick drums. go to the 2nd page and turn the high all the way down, or to your taste. go to the first page, then turn the low hertz of the kick up. this equals fat kick drums. your kick was clipping because of the filter you used in program edit.
I have a feeling you'd love the X more than the live ii if you don't move around much... You might have a quicker workflow given the extra buttons / shortcuts and the 16 q links. Just a thought thanks for the vid 🤟🏾
I bought the MPC X a few weeks back because I did not understand the Live (mk1) much... now it all makes sense... complex but much better... and the CV out to my synth rig is gonna be handy..
@@RickyTinez the X is a very aesthetically pleasing machine... And you have a very aesthetically pleasing channel... It's a match made in heaven.. And those Q links.. I'm telling ya. Confucious say let your studio flow like water 📿
Thanks, Ricky! Could the Live2 replace your 4000? I'm debating whether I should sell most of my machines and focus on the Live2. Thanks for your insights!
on Tracklib, where are you legally when that company is gone, with both material you have used to create original works or bought and haven't used yet? I'm really apprehensive with companies like this, but severely intrigued with older works for sampling. Sorry if this seems like a dark question, but to assume something will be around...is an optimism I can't afford, especially in this ipo entrepreneur pump n dump age we live in...
Ricky, I'm a frustrated Maschine user that's been using Maschine since day one, but tired of NI not improving the workflow, instead making it worse. Shall I take the plunge on the Live II?
I like what you did but I question why you’d use a sample that you’ll have to pay for when a virtual instrument will give you the same sound but without all the work
Hey man. This is super helpful. I’m going to take the plunge into MPC One-land this week after mostly using an iPad and some hardware synths. I’m looking for a way to have a dedicated recording station instead of my iPad doing double duty... as well an iPad. It was either an MPC One or a Blackbox. But based on your review of that I’m going with the MPC. Great to see your workflow. I’m curious what “other gear” you are referring too when you comment on the old school way of pattern programming the MPC excels at in comparison to modern pattern programming. Be nice to see a video on how you play it “contemporary”.
Yo Ricky really enjoyed the tutorial. Just bought the Live 2 and then went on vacation, but I'm excited to dive in fully when I get home! I was curious, would you consider making a video about exploring breakout controller options for live performance (i.e. keyboard, faders, pads for mutes on other on/off settings, assigning to plugin parameters, x/y, pitch shifting certain sample). Seems like there's so much potential there. Also, I'm curious if you have any experience with faderfox products. Keep doin your thang! Always inspiring. Best, Dan
Ricky do u or have u ever made trance or happy hardcore on an MPC I would like to get one for hip-hop production but I also like to make hardcore and trance what would the MPC be like for that style?
Love your videos Ricky! Just ordered myself a Live 2 and can't wait to get started. I've been meaning to ask: what headphones do you use? I don't recognize them. Thanks :)
I own 1st. Eventually I've paired it with jbl speaker, it just makes sense. Knob on the back is somewhat strange. I miss 'mix', 'tc' and other buttons. But overall It's great
@@J-Hz I've been looking at it more as an option now i can plug audio interfaces info it after the firmware update. Having separate track outs is quite a thing
He always has his gear used for filming in the description at the bottom and I'm pretty sure it goes right into the interface. I think it's a Clarett Pre.
I gotta say it blows my mind you have those amazing headphones to listen and hosa cables for your audio connects. Those things have been the worst for me in my experience. I hope they are sponsoring you or something!
haha really?! maybe i haven't noticed how good cables sound. My Rosson Headphones definitely help in hearing new things about my gear and music. maybe cables next? so far it hasn't stopped me yet
@@RickyTinez Dude do not fall for this witchcraft. A well-made cable that works is the same at any price point - the only difference as the price goes up is longevity.
Can someone PLEASE tell me the EXACT charger/model number that comes with the live 2. I purchased one from someone and they sent me a printer charger with it smh!!! It doesn't work!! I need a charger ASAP so I can charge the device back up. I've been on 26% for 2 days.
Hi Ricky! Thank you for your videos, I'm really learning a lot from you! Now I'm considering to buy MPC Live 2, do you have any issues with the memory there? 2Gb sounds like not a lot.
I love my maschine+ but something is appealing with live2. I am just worried I will not connect with the workflow. but my GAS meter is way high for the MPC.
I'm ignorant when it comes to this style of music. How the hell do people who use nothiing, but samples not go into absolute financial ruin? Maybe I'm not getting the concept, but holy shit $50 minimum per song you sample? And that's supposed to be a deal? I've been wanting to dive into electronic and old school hip-hop. How the hell does anyone afford to create in these genres?
You only pay that if you are going to release the music. The sub lets you download your sub amount for you to work with. If you want to release it you pay the extra. Tracklib is great for finding samples.
Unless you are kanye west noones coming after you for sample use. If you are just joe schmo, you can release all the music you want, youre fine. I have been sampling my entire life and releasing music and have never had a problem. I also dont sample obvious mainstream music, and chop everything, unless youre just looping freddie jackson samples, youre fine. Ignorance of sampling is funny to me
@@jonathansoko1085 youre right. Sample whatever you want as much as you want. By the time you get noticed and start blowing up, then maybe you can start paying for samples. Until that point, Sample whatever to your hearts content.
He's being sponsored by Tracklib... I don't think he's going to openly encourage piracy. Sampling it that way would work, though, but the downloads are high quality WAVs instead of compressed files. You could also just sample off RU-vid or Spotify.
