You could've converted the first loop to a drumrack and then adjusted the start and end points in simpler/sampler. If you want to layer you can do that inside each pad by creating new chains.
to everyone thats complaining that this isnt really an MPC work flow.. truthfully theres numerous ways to use the MPC. its just up to you. Dilla used it differently than Premo and Premo used it differently than Pete Rock etc. the work flow he was showing was more so for the MPC 60 (hence the thumbnail) which was a much more tedious work flow.. only this time he shows you how to do it on ableton.. thats just HIS way of translating HIS way of using the MPC within Ableton. i personally have an SP-303 and SP-555 workflow iwthin ableton. its all up to you and how you use it.
The Chromatic range trick was EXACTLY the sort of trick I’ve been looking for for years!!!!!!! Only thing that mpc users need now is a way to simulate 16 levels as well :)
great ableton workflow here for sure-im using a similar style but with an mpc 2000xl and ableton 9 suite-I will definitely try this out-Big Ups Fred Frog
Wouldn't really call it an MPC workflow, but there's only so much you can do to emulate that classic workflow. Maybe one could get close with some clever midi bindings.
If Ableton would put Time-Stretch / Pitch-Shift in Simpler / Sampler this would have taken 1/4 of the time to do and would give even more control. But the vid is great, love the shirt. Nice job.
ahhhh....the elusive USER mode, sweet. Been waiting to see how to do this with Push and really when you get down to it, it's so easy. Freddy is the guy to go to for the real techy sh!t....It is MPC with groove, edit, and automation@ ur fingertips.....PB in da house!
great vid but question --- when clicking user mode, the midi mapping does not allow to program to keys on push... any tips? just a blank screen when user mode is active.. thanks
Is it possible to map the clips to a MIDI controller that isn't push in the same way as Freddy did with 'user mode' in push? To map the pitch of the sample to a range of pads? MIDI mapping only allows 1 pad to trigger the clip. I guess you could duplicate the clip and re-pitch the duplicates but is there a way to achieve the same technique as shown in this video?
yeah thats one way to do it. but he kinda covers his choice with what he says about taking the other sample and NOT using the sampler. it's his preferred way to get sounds without have to tweak them individually as much as you would on a slice to midi. seems like he prefers to treat the stem as a whole and avoid the things that are gonna be a problem in the mix like clicks and pops and what not. then he rearranges manually. Slice to midi works as well but then each clip has to be treated individually. it just a manner of choice at the junction i think. Im not a big mpc guy but i know a few and this emulates their workflow pretty well. as long as u treat the sounds, slice to midi should be fine tho.
lamebotmusic ***** - I love Freddy but i've got to agree with Cat andbeats on this one.. I found the whole 'MPC' link rather tenuous. Looking forward to the next session though regardless.
The warp seems to already be turned on. Did you already know the BPM of the sample and set it before starting? Your BPM and Sample are both at the same BPM. This is something that's very important to know for beginners.
Triggering the audio clips as if they were MIDI notes is what they meant by MPC workflow. Not that he would be using an actual MPC machine. This was quite eye opening for me. Audio hits harder than un-tweaked MIDI.
Any midi keyboard or pads can do that. Awesome feature thats been there for years and years. If you set the clips to "Legato" launching things get even more interesting...
ZilchAbleton I see now. So are you saying that the feature he used there is Push specific, but there are Max devices I could use for any normal midi controller? Do you happen to know the names of them. I've been wanting to pitch whilst keeping the time stretch in place for a while now.
djdooban No, you don't need Max, just any midi controller that sends note messages. Select the clip, go into midi mapping mode, press and hold the key you want to play back at original pitch, then ( while still holding the first note ) press an hold the highest and lowest notes you want for the range. I believe you can even map Group launching like this.
Right, never had user mode configured properly. I tried this and it is great fun. It is different from using slice mode, I think its better for some reason. Possibly because I'm not using the fecker correctly.
zedster911 Freddie is originally French and moved to England some time ago. He was my instructor in 2012 in london - class act - very patient fella who gave us a lot of freedom to experiment
Does anyone know how I can haz a drumz sound on ableton pro? I dragged a sound of a hat and I made a filter to take out all the high frequency but then it just sounds like a wobble. How can I haz a kik?
Jason Caldwell you can do it with your laptop keyboard too. click cmd + k and assign clip to a keyboard character with your launch settings into "1/16, 1/32. or Off"
ik im using ableton now along with maschine. but when i first used the mpc it kinda taught me to be very selective. almost like the limitations helped with creativity. nothing againts ableton i honestly love the software
I hear what you are saying, its like that with crate digging if use records instead of mp3's you are going to be more creative with it and force yourself to use the sample because you have spent time finding and buying it
He use too much volume on the first track of the snares and seems Thant he don’t know how to use the classic Roland library in terms of quality selection :(
And I’ve forget ridiculous sequence of note every year they come out more and more inexperienced and perhaps recommended in the world of electronic music and djing
