The MPPT charge controller is an integral component in any solar system, off grid, RV, or cabin in the woods. Internally they have fuses that are soldered to the circuit board. This easy modification brings these fuses outside the housing where they are easy to service.

Yvan, interesting why some have a fuse that requires this much work to replace! A short cut design or just expecting to sell a new unit. Was this in the older bus?

Yes this was in the GMC, no solar installed in the MCI 102DL3 yet

I have the 100a tracer model. Are one of the fuses for the display/interfacing and the other for the charging? The display on the charge controller won't come on, the remote display won't connect, and I can't interface using a USB to a pc. But it still charges. Great tutorial by the way!

@@LacroixCruiser It's easiest to snip away the plastic of the fuses and solder your new fuses to the remaining legs still soldered onto the board.

How often do the fuses blow? I've been running a 60 amp for over a year and knock on wood I haven't had a problem. I've not heard about people blowing fuses in them in any of the solar groups I belong to.

It’s only happened once .
@brucefay5126
@brucefay5126 3 года назад
Once is enough to warrant the modification/upgrade. I will never understand the thought process that is used to decide that an internal fuse is better solution than an externally available fuse holder or, even better, a resetable circuit breaker. The cost savings just isn’t significant.

Mr Lacroix. Is there any hope for my solar charge controller after having mistakenly introduced solar power without the battery. I pulled the back and couldn't find any fuses. That's got me worried. Thanks for any help you can suggest. Bob

In that case you may want to contact the manufacturer

Have you had to replace any of the terminal screws that hold the PV or battery wires in place? I have a unit where the Phillips screw heads were stripped and Epever doesn't seem to have a solution. I haven't opened mine up yet.

@@LacroixCruiser I'm going to subscribe from my other YT name/channel, Off-Grid And RV Living. I hope you never have to but if you do, I'll be waiting. :D Epever sent a reply saying to use a thick rubber band on the end of the Phillips screwdriver but I'd really like to replace the screw so I can be sure of getting a tight connection. 15-30 amps DC is a lot of juice for a loose connection.

Agreed, that doesn’t sound like a long term solution.

curious if you checked the fuses before removing. i have a similar controller and all the fuses tested good (continuity) but it's totally dead. more detective work ahead.

I have no power going from my charge controller to the battery - is it possible the internal fuse has blown? I may have plugged the solar panel in before the battery to the CC as I was rushing. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Very possible, disconnect it, open it up, and check.

@@LacroixCruiser Thanks Lacroix. Looks like a broken fuse. Unable to get the fuse out though. Is it possible to use 30amp fuse wire for the job? Surprised they solder them in - any reason for this? Thanks, Joe

I unsoldered mine and wired in a fuse holder externally.

@joesnow739 3 года назад
@@randolfefrilleestranero5900 yes, the internal fuses had blown. Used fuse wire to fix them. Tied it around holes on the existing fuses as it was solder down. Works like a dream now!
