This is how we grow up❤. Every one helping & working in the yard/ garden, since you are small but every think was home made and fresh ,we also played in nature with no toys, no t.v ,grew up alone our parents ,gransparents working and we grow up healthy, strong ...our gransparents even made soap in home ,because in comunism era you didn' t find soup ,shampoo etc but we has strong hair & healthy, we brush our teath with baking soda sometimes because you find tooth paste hard ,but believe baking soda make your teath strong ,white ,kill bacteria etc . Now we live in big city with every think to buy and we are not so healthy, our kids grow up with chimicals etc so sad.

"Palincā“ (Palincah with a soft " 8:11 h") or "Tuicah" (special "t" pronuced as in "tsunami" same soft h) you could call them "moonshine" from fruits. Palinca is double or triple distilled. Starter, digetiv or moonshine for talk after. Palinca over 50 degrees, usually 60.

I live in Canada now, but I'm Romanian, my grandma used to have animals, she had lots of fruit trees and her own veggies, crops , making her own cheese, wine, palinca ( the prunes drink) the cherry drink, "visinata"😊, I miss the Romanian food and those veggies and fruits that have a taste, also fresh eggs from her chickens😊😢. And even now my mom back home has her own jars of jam, pickles etc. "mamaliga " is the name for the corn flour dish, is just corn flour mixed in the salty water until it tickens. it can be done with cheese as well.

Romania having 4 seasons, you only get fresh fruit and veggies from april to late october, now if u have gardening or a plot of land to grow a vegetable garden you have little bit of surplus so that was and still is the way of preserving stuff. It was very common for ppl to do this 50 60 year ago when having a fridge with freezer was a luxury

In Banat - in the area my father is from (and where my grandparents lived), soup is a food that is always present on the table. Doesn't matter if it's a regular meal, or a wedding, or a funeral, soup is always served. Another thing never missing are the cakes and pies. I spent most of my summers there. My grandparents would do it like this: they boiled a chicken (with carrots, and some onion, maybe even some celery); the broth is served with the carrots in it, homemade noodles and parsley; the chicken is removed and cooked a bit more in the oven and served with mashed potatoes. The broth is enough to last a couple of days. So the next day you would get some of the same soup and either some sauteed cabbage with salted pork or sausages or beans with sausages. I'm not sure if sauteed cabbage is the best translation, but can't think of a better one. In the mornings we often had milk (sometimes tea) with eggs and sausages, or cheese with tomatoes and we'd finish breakfast with bread and jam. And the cakes and pies.... I've never seen another area with so much variety (maybe it's because you don't get to see everything as a tourist, but I think it's just the local customs that brought this variety). Every family used to have a secret cake recipe in my fathers home village - that would be dozens of recipes just for cakes. And then there are the pies and cookies... an endless variety of home made sweets. My grandma's secret recipe was a cake made with a spongy cake batter with walnuts in it, a delicious cream that I never knew how it was made, and everything ornate with grated walnuts.

8:36, yes, the most dangerous object in a Romanian house is the plastic bottle... you never know what it contains. In Romanian homes, everything is recycled: plastic bottles will always be filled with various drinks (we even developed a mechanism/object that allows soda to be made in and bottled), organic waste is thrown into the garden to make compost, any wire is used for repair/strengthening fences/household objects, old textiles are used in the production of carpets (Ikea type), wheat residues (wheat bran) are used to make a liquid used to sour soups so on...

Fact about your kuku. I am from Romania, from a region (Banat) bordering Serbia, Hungary and close to the region were this blog was filmed (Oltenia). In our countryside speech ( who is a mix from romanian, hungarian, serbian and german words) maize is kukuruz, Also you can try to hear the prononciason in serbian (kukuruza) or hungarian (kukoricza) language using Google translate. Also in polish language is kukuridza and in ucrainian is kukurudza. KUKU everywere.🙂 Another thing: regular romanian food is not spisy (hot spicy), this is an option for those who like it. Also, it is clear in in Jet Lag Warriors blog theat was a aditional dressing.

Mamaliga (polenta) seems similar to the Cou-Cou you mentioned... a simpler version, I'd say. Cornmeal, water and salt is all that goes into it. We love it either as a side, instead of bread, or as a stand-alone dish - mixed with cheese and sour cream.

Our palinca can get form 30 % to 60 % alcohol there usually making a 40-45% alcohol because thats the procentaj that the taste is the best. We also boiled wine and tuica in winter jut to warm up in hard winter.

The romanian kuku is called mămăligă. I am guessing is the same. Corn flower, water and a bit of salt. Boiled slowly and stirred very well. We are eating it as a substitute to bread. I am sure you have the same, after all the corn came in Europe from the South and Central America. She exagerrate a bit regarding the spice. in comparation with S-E Asia, Central Africa and Caraibe is not as spicy...indeed some types of food can be quite spicy in Romania but not at that level. All those jars from the beging of the video are a consequence of the climate. From the begining of the autum until next summer not much is growing and people had to find ways to preserve the food.
@MrGiant

In the mountains here in the US where Ilive people do the same thing. Jars of preserved food everywhere. We did not do that much on the island where i am from because different foods grow year round because of the tropical climate.

Visinata. Is an high alcoholic drink made with sour cherry mixed with sugar topped up wit high stegnt alcohol/palinca and macerated for 3 to 4 weeks. Is very sweet and syrupy, tricky it wil get you drunk fast without knowing, serve either as appetizer or with desser as digestive. Ladys tends to prefer this as is smoother than palinca

Now is 3:45 am. Good morning, mr Giant! 😊 at pickles we call MURĂTURI. They are made with hot water+ salt ( 1 Table spoon of salt, 1 litre water) . Accidity is verry good. VIȘINATA( vishinata) is a luqeor made with VIȘINE ( vishine). I don't understand english, americans why they complicate theyr life and language 😅. For two different objects, situations etc you use 2 words. For example this. You say " sour cerries" , but this fructe is VIȘINE( VISHINE). they are different like cherry. VIȘINE are translucid and exclussive dark Red. Cherryes are yellow, Red, even...Black 😊. MAMALIGA is the same like in " My cousin Vinny" movie with Marisa Tomey and Joe Pesci. They eat " gritz".

Truth is that Romanians are like vampires but in a good way. We like to treat our guests as well as we can and when we see them having a good time and enjoying themselves we get energy from the good vibes of our guests. If you ever come to Romania, best is to plan for a long trip so you can stay for the moment and take it slow. If you rush through all the touristy places you will miss a lot of nice things. Hello again; well, Romania is almost 80% rural area and until the end of the First World War, Romanians lived almost exclusively in the countryside. The nobility was (especially later) mostly foreign and in Transylvania, Romanians were forbidden from entering the cities (I believe you could only get inside to buy/sell animals/vegetables/fruits/other types of merchandise and then you had to get out before the gates were closed). The common peasants had no right to vote, although they paid taxes (I believe there was one vote per village, but I'm not sure if the mayor/priest/teacher each had a vote themselves); in Transylvania, the phenomenon known as "magyarization" was prevalent, where if you changed your name to a Hungarian one, converted to Catholicism (Romanians are traditionally Orthodox Christians) and started learning Hungarian, you would be welcome into the "proper" echelon of society, otherwise you'd be cast aside and left to rot in the countryside. In Vallachia, the Ottoman Empire kept the region as a buffer against the Russian Empire, the local boyars were abusing the population and in Moldova, they were under Russian domination (later the URSS cut Basarabia away from Romania and started an aggressive process of russification). During World War II, Hitler invited Romania to join the Axis, we refused so he allowed the Hungarians to conquer the north of Transylvania in order for Romania to join and prove itself before the Führer, in order to gain that territory back. Afterwards, we were forced to switch side and fight on the Allied side (siding with the Soviets) who then brought only chaos for our country. 50 years of corruption, planned economy and Ceausescu's cult of personality brought us to ruin and, as a side-effect of communist rule, our "discrimination" criteria aren't based on color, race etc. (Romania had and still has many African and/or Arab and Asian foreigners who come here to study, work or open businesses and we've never had trouble with them, if at all); one might consider a person's "fatness of their wallet" and the size/number of their connections and acquaintances as a criteria of being considered "upper/lower class" - if you know people and have the dough, you're someone, otherwise you're trash. However many people are warm hearted and mean no harm. :)

what she shows under the house is not onion. it's leek. the only thing I found in english that matches, but I am not sure 100% . she says "oltenian onion" because the oltenians eat a lot of leek and its a romanian joke to call it like that. i think because we usually eat a lot of onion, so the others eathing a lot of leek makes it being their onion lol. what a weird game this joke has involved in the background. also, someone offered to send you some palinca in the comments i read yesterday on the last video I watched, if he does I am really curious what you think about it lol. make a reaction please :)) i drank all these drinks, not a fan because they are strong and I do not like hard stuff, only wine and beer. even though I am from the capital Bucharest and live in a flat, my father used to do visinata(sour cherry drink - the one they drink) or zmeurata (same thing but from raspberries-zmeura) or even palinca and tuica in our apartment. he had some device that looked like he was a crazy chemist lol. if I remember correctly, the palinca is the version of tuica that is being rerun like 3-4 times through the same process in order to reach concentration. I think I heard about someone having 90 degrees palinca. imagine making tuica which is strong as well, maybe vodka like? and thinking "I'mma do this 3 times more to make sure" hahhaa pentru romanii care nu au inteles de ce se auzea fanfara, de fapt spiritul romanesc a summonat capra si ursul de iarna si sunt sub geamul lui

lots of people make the folly dough ( the same kind or similar to the one used for baklava) pie like that... and it can be with cheese filling, or even cabbage or meat... it's got Turkish or Tatar influences but yeah... in Dobrogea region you can find this version of pie a little more popularly. There's also the linzer, which is made with a tender type of dough, like in a tart, but it's structured like a sandwich: sheet of dough, apple filling, sheet of dough, baked until it's a nice golden brown, and then it's powdered with sugar before serving. And there are also the types of "pies" like the strudel ( puff pastry with apple filling) or the ones made with a brioche dough.

You should swap the screens. You want to show Romania not your face, don't you?

You don't come to the man video to tell him how to make the clips.

@DinaA506 Why not? Because you say so? I gave him advice and he appreciated it.

@@ciuzdamm Because it's his channel and he makes the videos the way he wants, not the way you want, if you don't like it, don't watch. Simple. 😉

Until last 50 60 years pretty much every family was self-sufficient. Due to communist party politics food in the shops was rather scarce
