This was for sure the episode that solidified Gary as one of the best characters. He's a bit flaky, a bit of a creep, but when you need him on your side, he is _there._ Now _that's_ a friend.
Hell yeah he was there. The unicorn in the woods, the multiple times he was tucked in the bushes with a rifle for support, tracking down this pedo and handling it himself simply because of how time sensitive it was. Calling in the 'cleaner' only when things were sorted. Gary was a wet mess, but he was there when needed, absolutely.
I liked that Gary was the one who tracked down and saved the girl while Ray was chasing the wrong lead. Gary was often played as the dummy character but he really pulled through in this scene.
Yeah, honestly, I was shocked that he managed to pin down the location with his shady contacts. I was so relieved to see this episode end on such a radical note of true justice.
I like when shows do this, give even their secondary characters a chance to shine, and show they are more than just one thing. So many modern writers try to make their main character seem more competent by making the side characters stupid or dimwitted.
It's incredible how Ray's beheavior was different in this episode. For once Ray didn't plan and execute, he ran completely on instinct the whole time. Anyone who wronged him or his mates got dealt with quick and cold. The thought of someone selling a child into slavery hit that switch and Ray went "No, not on my watch."
But isn’t the point kinda that he abandons his good instincts in favor of blindly going after everyone who he felt had wronged him, when in fact the child trafficking was random and had nothing to do with him. He fails in this episode.
@@nattygraber1375 Time was of the essence, the girl could have been gone if he wasted too much time. So going wild was kind of the right move. And even the most violent criminals have two lines you don't cross, rape and pedophilia.
I believe you are both correct, and Scott Ryan (Ray) shows this very well in the episode. While Ray loses his mind like any of us would in pursuit of the people who took his friend's daughter, he also destroys a few already-strained relationships, including his friendship with the owner of the strip club where he works, costing him his 'front' job, and at one point threatening to blow the head off a man's mother with a shotgun. HOWEVER, his quick-although-somewhat-irrational thinking also results in Gary acting equally rapidly, resulting in threatening the correct people and thus getting the correct information to find the girl before she is sold to some real pedophiles.
@nattygraber1375 That was the point. He got comfortable at the store and paid the consequence. The point was that cold blood switch he can flick is easier for him. Thats why in the end we leave off with him obviously not planning to stay in the taxi business.
The sad part is, somehow people would find a way to turn a system set up for nobility into something exploitable. And soon after it started, the equivalent of SWATting would take place, people would maybe even use AI just like what happened to that highschool principal not long back, make AI generated evidence of wrongdoing to get bounties placed on innocent people. The sentiment is well placed, but a different system is needed.
@@BillySotherden Some things that you will read are written in the past tense, which means it could have happened as recently as a couple of hours ago, or perhaps as long as 30 years ago. While ambiguous, the writer's use of past tense language implies that this encounter occurred some years ago. The fact that they are commenting on RU-vid also tends to suggest that they are no longer imprisoned, further hinting towards this abstract concept of 'time' and 'past'.
@@BillySotherden Prison Warder..? Staff member..? Visiting another prisoner..? I can think of plenty of possible scenarios. & so what...? What's your point..?
Fun Fact: In the abduction scene earlier in this episode where the little blonde girl is taken from the department store, you can see the creepy blonde pedo walk past their aisle in the background wearing a pair of sunglasses and looking at the two young girls. A subtle reminder from the producer/actor Scott Ryan (Ray) to always be vigilant, as predators are always on the prowl for kids. This show is chock full of easter eggs like that.
No joke, I got this on my Recommendation and I've seen lots of comments aaying the same too. I guess the algorithm is reviving this show to the surface once more.
This show flew under my radar for a while. It’s so well done. I can’t think of a better song to end the episode. The fact that you don’t see the violence, and are only left with the blood and the swinging bulb as Ray slowly walks out is super powerful. Ominous justice. Everybody should fear this man’s wrath.
Last time I looked up this scene it had about 5200 views. Now it has 355,000. Do I sense that ‘Mr. Inbetween’ is finally getting the recognition it deserves?
Damn, that's good acting. His expression going in made him look like a totally different person.. Dead eyed and determined. Then he opened the door as himself again.
I almost have tears how this scene is a masterpiece. The whole episode is an amazing study for future scripwriters. And Nick Cave song fits soooo perfectly.
Man, the music choices in this show were always (or at worst almost always) badass and always fit so well. Slapping some Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds over this was just chef's kiss perfection!
an absolute insider tip. Almost unknown here in Europe, I came across this series purely by chance and am simply thrilled. For me, the last episode of season 2 is one of the best I've ever seen in a series. Mr. Inbetween is an Australian masterpiece.
American here - I loved the Underbelly series, especially the first two seasons. Also, what about Rake? Cleaver Greene is such a character!!! Anyway - Aussie Aussie Aussie!!!!
Wow very nice! The way the scene was shot with that heavy one note & slow motion, to when he opened the door & they screamed, then mute was intense! Then when he walks out the music kicks back in as he walks away bloody was a billion words into a speechless scene. Even in the silence we could hear them scream as justice was served! Great cinematography!!!
This episode and "Monsters" are tied for the best of any TV show ever made. In my opinion, of course. At the end of "Monsters" when Burl Ives' version of "Riders In the Sky" strikes up as Ray ventures down the train tunnel sends chills down my spine every time.
as I sat reading comments, a minute or two after watching....I read your comment and it hit me, that track is still playing in my head....down yonderrrrrr. I am happy for the info on the artist.
I mean the thing is being that vigilante will end you up in jail, you aren’t the law so they treat it as you being quite senseless and unfit for society
I love how he disrobed upstairs in preparation for what he knew would be a bloodbath. Went in to that room like a bladed hurricane and came out knowing he'd delivered justice. This show was a surprise for me and a scratch to an itch I was barely aware of. Fantastic.
@@banecastle8772 Likewise. I had seen clips on here, like the 2 guys knocking his daughters ice cream to the ground and a scene from his therapy meetings then I finally looked it up and saw it was years old and had 3 seasons. I grabbed them all, binged the lot of them and was like holy crap that was a good show. Normally I would object to the cheeky look in the camera during the final seconds but all things considered, I can't fault this show when I enjoyed it so much. From the first episode, seeing how the story telling was very linear and not jumping back and forth between 3 different plot lines. That alone was refreshing. We were on a ride, following this one man. I was all in, even rewatching some scenes multiple times because they were just so good. Another refreshing aspect was that he wasn't a psychopath like Dexter. He had emotion and empathy. The protective instincts, the feeling of pity and loss over a friend, the humour of covering for his mate with the "pee pee" movies then telling her the truth when it didn't matter anymore just to see her face. In many ways, just a good guy making his way. But holy hell he's not shy when the storms come. It was subtle and maybe some missed it, but a lot of his character I felt was perfectly summed up when we saw that tattoo on the back of his neck. What a brilliant addition to put in a show like this and hold off showing it until we've seen it proved true for a couple seasons. Just awesome. This will remain in my collection for sure.
@maxthibodeau3627 says he sitting on high horse whose never been abused, I wonder if you say the same if it was your daughter or sister or wife abused, I don't think so 😡
@@sgtsnokeem1139 Likely not. If Trump was on that docket list when Ghislaine/Epstein were arrest, the elites would have most certainly slipped it to the public by now.
This show was amazing, when I started the episode I had 0 idea it was going this way and my heart was in my throat the moment Ray asked Brit “where’s Maddy” and it remained there until I saw Maddy get out of the car and hug her mom. Then it was nothing but adrenaline as we cut to Ray. This show was so magnificent in every single way it seriously was just something I thought I’d try out and it’s one of my favorite shows of all time.
Yeah but you can’t say for sure every single person on it WAS actively doing anything. Yes it looks incriminating to be on it but just offing people for being on it is a step too far.
they managed to get close enough to the prison where that scum maxwell is to get a foto of it. so that's close enough to aim a shot at her spine. she has it coming.
This is great. Leaving what he had done to your imagination is really powerful. Many great directors have done this instead of letting gore and blood take over. Playing Nick Cave isn't a bad idea either. Great scene.
@@maxthibodeau3627 You obviously haven't watched the show if you think he's a "Punisher type". The Punisher is just some comic book character who is seeking retribution as a life goal. This character Ray is a hitman committing murder for a living, but in this particular example, I would hardly call it murder as these people deserved even worse than death, but this character Ray decided to rid the world of their presence for free.
Most likely one the most underrated shows in the last 10yrs. Far better than most that’s on Hulu/FX and I’m loosely, very loosely associated with one of the major shows on Hulu at the moment and I still think this show is better!! It’s a fucking shame that this show wasn’t bigger. Ray should be up there with Tony, Walter, and Omar.
I bet it does more often than we know. Media's twisted, buddy; always has been. We have no idea how many murders around the world had pretty damn logical reasons for going down. 🤷♂
It actually has played out that way a couple times I know of and all done by dads just goes to show you hurt a man’s kids like that chances are he’s coming for you and he’s willing to take the jail time
Love this episode so much, this one and Nice Face are fuckin S+ tier TV, both stuck in my mind for a loooong time after seeing them. Also the "I will" tattoo is fuckin perfect.
I just finished the 3 seasons of this in a week. It's short episodes (25mins ish) so it's not much run time compared to most series which is usually 45mins to an hour Edit, well worth the watch and the Aussie sense of humour is awesome
100% agreed. I've always felt like Australia is the last Developed Civilization and continent that isn't afraid to make and publish certain types of comedy and content.
Love this show and Ray the anti-hero. One thing gets me though, the show tries to be realistic, but the amount of murderous crime scenes Ray leaves his fingerprints at during the course of the three seasons and the Coppers only ever get him for a quick road rage dust up? (and only then because they got lucky) There's some poor detective work going on there.....
You are assuming that a) coppers even investigated this house and found the bodies in the secret room, and b) Ray and Gaz didn't get to work after this scene to clean up the scene.
@@user-ot1ue5qc5e It wasn't just this scene though, every crime, every shootout, Ray made no effort to clean up after himself. The local crime scene investigators would have had evidence of him and his work all over the place?
@@bmccarty2012 TV doesn't wa t to teach 0eople how to actually commit crimes so they do things intentionally wrong... Example they almost always intentionally mess up military uniforms so those who do stolen valor trying to look at a movie as refrence get caught.
A relative was briefly interned recently due to depression and met two female patients there, perhaps of about 25 years of age. One was perfectly normal and had a baby years ago, but was raped and got completely insane. The second was continually sold by her mother at 12 years-old to an older man who raped her, and she was also abused by her stepfather, developing bipolar crisis or something of that sort. This is to show that most obvious truth: rapists and pedophiles that are PROVED criminals (false accusations are in fashion nowadays, be aware of that) aren't civilized persons, and don't deserved to be treated like that. The same applies to anyone who protects them in any manner, specially by some sort of law bullshit.
In my head canon Ray was a member of the Special Operations Engineer Regiment and I therefore saw him using a shovel, the traditional melee weapon of his old regiment, to kill them as a sign he saw his actions as deeply personal.
