"Jane Austen taught me never trust a man in uniform." that was exactly my thoughts when they first introduced Captain Ossory. we learned our lesson very well.

I found Mr. Malcom’s List to be a refreshing addition to the period rom-coms. I love that they gave Miss Dalton two equally charming love interests instead of making every other man an odious creep like they do in most movies. I also loved that the movie valued the female friendship between Miss Thistlewait and Miss Dalton, it felt akin to Lizzie Bennett and Charlotte Lucas’ friendship. Honestly the film feels like the clear heir apparent to Jane Austen, I think she would’ve approved of the story. The critics are just haters letting their bigotry show. OT: I think the reason Mr. Malcom’s apology to Miss Dalton was so striking was because men in rom-coms don’t apologize to women, their actions are supposed to speak for them. This was an annoying trend I started to notice in Stranger Things (wrong genre, I know) and in Bridgerton, specifically Anthony Bridgerton who is physically incapable of apologizing to a woman, even to his mother her deserves all the cuddles in the world.

The reviews I've seen so far have been way too critical of this film. Yes, it's predictable, but that's not a bad thing. It's a fun, lighthearted movie with a good amount of drama.
@taylorgayhart9497
@taylorgayhart9497 Год назад
I am also the belief that predictable isn’t a bad thing for me I feel like I like to know it’s coming, that’s why I rewatch the same movies and shows over and over again lol obviously I’m an extreme circumstance, but I really do think that critics need to stop thinking of predictability or some thing inherently bad.
@valeriecee54
@valeriecee54 Год назад
I concur completely. To me, having a good story is more important than being seen as predictable. And besides, as someone who doesn't watch a lot of romance movies or period dramas in general, this movie's "predictability" is foreign to me. Thus, this makes watching Mr. Malcolm's List a fun introduction to these genres.

I recently bought the book, and I’m barely 10 chapters in and I’m OBSESSED with how cute it is! I unfortunately wasn’t able to see it in theaters (live in a tiny town, movie theater only really brings in children’s movies and things like Top Gun) but I’m excited to buy it once it releases physically (or comes on HBOMAX)

wait wait wait....HE'S SPEAKING YORUBA IN THE MOVIE?! I completely freaked at that bit, I assumed everything was just straight up colourblind cast a la Bridgerton season one, but it's more like 2 where they actually wrote in specific cultural background to the character.

@yaynayormeh

That was actually the one bit that bothered me in the movie. If this is a situation where it's not just colour-blind casting, but Mr. Malcolm has a different cultural background, then it raises more questions than the film has the time or inclination to answer

I read the book and then watched the movie right after! 10/10 adaptation. It had the sweetness, the tension, and comedy of the book while having my favorite thing: color blind casting! I've read Incognito by Suzanne Allain and loved it as well. I laughed out loud at multiple points. She's an autobuy author for me now.
@heathermcgivney4448
@heathermcgivney4448 Год назад
The book is delightful. I haven't seen the movie yet, but the clips you've shown makes it seem like a fairly faithful adaptation. And the story of how the movie got made is great too: it was featured on a podcast as one of the best unmade scripts, then the opening scenes got made into an "overture" featuring much of the same cast. Then the overture got the script sold to make the movie. I think you'd really like the book, and Suzanne Allain's newest book Miss Lattimore's Letter. Aside from being great stories, both have some really charming references to Jane Austen, if you know to spot them.

The movie was released here in England this weekend, last night I watched it and this afternoon I'm watching your reaction to it. I saw you had a video about this when I was looking into the Netflix Persuasion debacle and couldn't wait to get your response. Your reaction was as adorable and inciteful as I was expecting. I also live in Bath so the line about it being quite the destination for Septugenarians raised a few giggles in my screen. What I'm about to say might seem like a criticism of the film, but it's not intended as such. What I like about the film is that it's modern. It was written in 2009 by an American not in 1813 by an Englishwoman. This film follows all the structures and tropes of a modern rom-com movie rather than a novel of the Regency. If we updated the EXACT plot to today and have the Zawe Ashton character be the head of a publishing house (They're always in publishing) who gets humiliated by an Insta post going viral, it would be the same film. Cast someone like Vivica Fox and you could play it on Hallmark. What saves this movie and why I actually love it are two main factors. Sope Dirisu & Freida Pinto have smouldering chemistry that I buy whole-heartedly, and Zawe Ashton steals the whole movie. She is a goddess amongst mortals in this film.

I might be in the minority there, but I LOVED both Netflix’s Persuasion and Mr. Malcolm’s List for how it respected its white, Black and Indian female leads on screen, both movies were directed and written by women and that was very empowering. One can’t argue on that. And I love the book version of Persuasion on its own! I think both movies will age well for different reasons. I enjoy the theater influence in both movies as there are several scenes where the female characters look at the camera and I love the humour and the editing of both movies. According to me, this is how period romance should be on screen, sweet, fun, witty and with multidimensional characters. Bridgerton didn't give me that. However, Mr. Sunshine on Netflix did it and I highly recommend this fantastic show. It’s way more dramatic but it still has humour and the romance is Oscar-worthy. It didn't need to be extremely explicit to be engaging. I’m so glad more modern period dramas from the West are going for the pure vision of romance on screen.
