Just saw the movie. Has everything like the show. Powerful emotional. Tears of understanding, tears of joy, tears of sadness since I feel like him in regard to living by just living life.

I saw it yesterday. I don’t think I’d watch another Monk movie and that’s heartbreaking because I love Monk and I’ve watched reruns over and over. It doesn’t have the energy of the original show. The first half hour, I almost turned it off repeatedly. Monk was so dour for so long. Molly got over the death of her fiancé within a heartbeat…and yet the ENTIRE series was based on Monk’s NEVER getting over the death of Trudy. That disconnect in dynamics just didn’t work. The best things about this movie were Brooke Adams (Tony Shalhoub’s real-life wife) playing the publisher in the beginning and Richard Kind as the funeral directors. And the ending sequence was lovely. The actress who played Molly was really good but the direction was not right and I’ll tell you how I knew this Monk movie just didn’t work. For the full hour-and-a-half there was very little time when I wasn’t comparing these actors in their roles to how they had been throughout the series. And I kept feeling something was off. Some of it has to do with aging & plastic surgery, but that’s not all. The spark in those characters was gone. They couldn’t pick up from where they had been throughout the series. They had such well-developed relationships over all those years that there was a sense of vacancy among them when they were put back together. The phenomenal closing of the final episode of the series, where characters were saying goodbye to each other & showing hints of their impending lives, was so poignant! They should have found a way to start this movie with something relevant & meaningful in order to rekindle their relationships. That was the giant error that set the movie off on the wrong foot. And I hate that I’m saying this because I love Monk the series so much. The villain in this whole scheme was just a little too flat and unbelievable. There was something slightly cartoonish about the characters in Monk the series. And it worked!!! They walked a fine line between farce and thriller. This engaging energy was missing from the movie. I suppose for somebody who never saw the show, it might work, But I wanted my people back with their edgy interactions and their believable relationships, but I didn’t get it. Without giving things away (although I did one, but I saw that in reviews already), there were a few scenes that seemed like they were the reason that the script was written the way it was in order to get people to that "payoff". Monk, the series, had a flow to it and didn’t make me feel like I was being set up as a viewer. Hint to the creators: If you have any thoughts about developing another Monk movie, or rekindling the series, vet what you’re planning to do with avid fans like me who will be able to show you where you’re being inauthentic and not doing justice to the characters that we all grew to know and love. The series was such a well-executed tour de force that viewers like me, didn’t care when you changed actors playing Trudy or Dale the Whale. We didn’t have a problem with Monk’s home being an apartment one time and a house another. The characters & the plot lines held everything together. In the “Last Case”, when Monk was more animated, the movie did better. I hope the producers keep that in mind if they ever plan to revisit Monk. Frankly, they should’ve written a story where Tony is now married to Brooke Adams, with her as the sheriff she played in “Mr. Monk Visits a Farm”. They could put them anywhere, in any kind of setting, and it would be fantabulous! Brooke was terrific in all her Monk appearances. The chemistry between her and Tony was spectacular. Who knew she was such a great comedic actress? There's the spin-off series!!! Title of the first episode: "Sheriff Butterfield Ropes Mr. Monk"!!!

Given COVID and Monk's prior history of contamination OCD, it's not believable that he's among people without, at minimum, an N95. Is this an alternate history world where COVID never hit?
@onionbubs386
@onionbubs386 7 месяцев назад
The pandemic is part of the canon. I wondered why he wasn't masking either, but I figured it's probably because a mask would cause audio issues and make it harder for Tony to be express emotion.
@throckwoddle
@throckwoddle 7 месяцев назад
@@onionbubs386 Thanks. I'm sure those are the reasons, but it would have been much better if they pretended it never happened, or placed it in 2019. I only have mild contamination OCD and I don't go out without masking (and a few other precautions). I think this breaks the believability of the movie and probably won't watch it because of this. Thanks again.

Here we go. Once again, making fun of obsessive compulsive disorder. Listen, I love Tony, he’s a great actor. But the writers of the show and this new movie are still in stigma mode. Please please please get out of it. Too many people suffer from OCD. I’m one of them.

Think about the fact that, even though he’s OC, he is valued and included socially, and though people roll their eyes or laugh at him, they do not dismiss him as a person. I imagine that not so many OC people get that kind of acceptance. I think it’s a step in the right direction but I do get what you’re saying.

I agree. I think it missed the mark because the personalities of the characters just weren’t there like they were throughout the series. If you look through here, I wrote a long critique of the movie. I was hoping it would be as good as the series, and I was disappointed too.
