Mr. Plinkett's Star Trek 2009 Review (part 1 of 2)

I had recently re-watched Star Trek so I wanted to discuss it and my thoughts on it in detail. Finally. This review is more of an analysis on the making of the film and Trek in general more than your typical Mr. Plinkett complaint-fest. Enjoy friends!

It's really interesting watching this in 2019, where all the points about how most the movies were a sequel, reboot, remake, and about how many options of entertainment services there were. And now all of that is HYPERCHARGED.

@@ElectricBarrier "arthouse and other smaller types of films" You do know that arthouse style is like, 1% of smaller indie films right? I'm with Cheezy here, there's a nearly infinite amount of original and great indie movie with unique premises, takes, and stories. The problem are that most people don't actually care about "original" films, they just care about big budget films from Hollywood. So all of the originality that exists doesn't get financially supported, so less originality is successful, and thus Hollywood follows suit. Every single person that complains about a lack of original movies should be putting their entertainment money into buying indie films from independent creators/small studios. if everyone actually did that, the Hollywood problem would ALSO solve itself. Even if Hollywood kept not being original, the indie creators would finally have enough money to increase their budgets and get even better.

I saw an interview with Gene Roddenberry's kid who was, for awhile, crusading for his fathers original intentions behind Star Trek. In the interview he was invited to the set of the new Star Trek and talked to JJ Abrams. I can only imagine how the conversation went. Did JJ know that the kid wished his fathers work would just be honored as intended, or was he just happy to be there seeing Star Trek return? To be fair Gene's vision was only, truly, good under the constraints and collaboration he was forced to work with. But, slowly Star Trek would move to something further from his vision of adventure in space by an enlightened and hopeful humanity. Not all the following Trek was bad, but it was further from this idea. At the moment, I can recognize almost nothing in common with that vision in the newest vision of Star Trek. Otherwise, I completely agree with Mr. Plinkett (Mike).

@hitomisalazar4073
@hitomisalazar4073 5 лет назад
Part of what irked me so badly about the Timeline/Reboot thing was, when the movie came out (At least in my region), they didn't fess up to it. All the advertising and trailers they were showing locally to me played it up as a straight up prequel to the original series. The first hint at all that it was a reboot was when I entered the theater and saw Kirk's father die in the first 10 minutes. It was a shock, and not a pleasant one as it was a bait and switch. And it never really recovered from that for me. Because Abrams didn't really want to make a Star Trek movie, as it showed. He wanted to make an action movie which... isn't why I go to see Star Trek. This isn't to say Trek can't have action scenes. But it isn't the appeal or the reason that you pop in to check it out. It's about exploring ideas and the nature of humanity as, well, to be honest most Sci-Fi tends to be about.

I just found the Mr. Plinkett reviews and I've never laughed so hard in my life. I almost hurt myself watching the Star Wars prequal reviews. These things are the best. Also, Parallels is one of my favorite TNG episodes so he got that shit wrong!
@odojang
@odojang 7 лет назад
Quite right. Parallels (one of the great TNG episodes, TRUE sci-fi) is about the intriguing idea of quantum parallel universes, NOT parallel timelines. Parallel universes means you may exist in an infinity of variations and that every action and decisions have consequences; one of Star Trek's great messages, highlighted by masterpiec episodes like City on The Edge of Forever. Parallel timelines would mean that there is no consequence to anything you do if you alter history; you just create a new history and yours continues happy and your new history continues happy so nothing matters, all is fine; something Star Trek NEVER agreed about; except in the universally declared shitty Endgame final episode of Voyager, (and ST 2009) every single time there was an alteration in time, they all (except senile old Spock) did everything to correct it, because a change in history effectively DESTROYED the timeline to replace it by a FALSE one. Nothing could be more irresponsible than that and thus, nothing could be less Star Trek than that. Inept Orci & Kurtzman (who also destroyed the Transformers franchise and the Spider-Man franchise) just confused the two to give Abrams what he wanted; a clean slate to do with Star Trek a demo reel to pitch for Star Wars... and in the process, destroy Star Trek as well; changing a mature, thought-provoking and entertaining sci fi show into a kiddie live action cartoon show set in space.
@jadencamaya305
@jadencamaya305 7 лет назад
odojang
@odojang
@odojang 7 лет назад
On the contrary; Star Trek has been most consistent on this fact; you do not alter the timeline without consequences; the main one being, you destroy what was in favor of what now is: the morality play this creates is the fascinating point explored with the story and Trek always took the stance that it was wrong to do so. Sci Fi then becomes what it is best known for; a reflection about us, reality and existence and how our own actions impact on it all; that we are responsible for or own decisions and must rise up to that responsibility. Only Janeway broke that rule among Trek captains; hence why Endgame is seen as the lazy bad plot contrivance to end the story that it was. Archer stopped the aliens from altering WWII; Kirk restored what McCoy had changed; Picard stopped the Borg from changing earth History; Sisko stopped Darvin from killing Kirk... even Janeway opposed the Krenim Empire from playing with the timeline before she decided the send everything to hell for the sake of making things better for her and her friends. Nu-Trek brushed it all away as something of no consequence to let Abrams do "his" Star Trek Wars with the cope out of "but I'm not changing anything, you can still have your real Trek and I will have my demo reel to pitch for Star Wars." The fact that he uses Spock, of all characters (the very one that convinced Kirk that Edith Keller HAD to die, return Captain Christopher to his life, let Gary Seven complete his mission etc), is all the more "un-trek" and proof that neither he nor Orci & Kurtzman understood anything at all.

I'm coming to this thread from the future but it seems that Mike -- I mean, Mr. Plinkett has a weirdly strong distaste for parallel universes, like they somehow invalidate the storytelling of Star Trek. I don't get it though. Parallels is one of my favorite TNG episodes, and it's not like the existence of other universes makes the one we're in less special.

I actually found the Plinkett Star Trek reviews before I ever saw his Star Wars reviews. As a lifelong Trekkie they made me laugh SO hard. (Purple space bazooka!) The infamous Star Wars reviews are excellent, but to me, this is one of the best reviews Redlettermedia has ever done. It's entertaining, funny, and the way the Hollywood system operates nowadays is explained perfectly. They are afraid to take chances on original ideas in favor of remakes, rehashed sequels, reboots, and an emphasis on properties and franchises has really killed the diversity of films nowadays. Fortunately by this point in 2018 I have witnessed a reaction to this trend in better quality cable TV and on demand content and some very well crafted smaller films that have actually made a decent impact. I also really love how much emphasis Mike put on how everything in this reboot was HYPERCHARGED in order to appeal to modern audiences. I feel this applies to most contemporary big-budget productions since the release of Transformers. Studios don't understand or care about the concept of proper pacing anymore and barely give the viewer space to breathe. Even anime director Miyazaki is quoted as saying that's one of the most crucial elements of filmmaking.

I don't see that problem with Parallels. That's like saying "Why are you so upset about your mother dying? There's millions and millions of similar people in the world"
@Loseirdo
@Loseirdo 8 лет назад
+Crowley9 Similar. Not identical. Parallels literally made it so that a potentially infinite number of every person to ever exist all exist simultaneously in alternate timelines. Every decision you have ever made was made differently by a different version of yourself in another timeline. That means that every mistake you've ever made has been avoided by one of your numerous copies. That means that there is a version of you with a perfect life, thus rendering your life completely devoid of any kind of meaning. It also means that free will cannot possibly exist, because literally everything that _can_ happen _does_ happen. All the terrible things that have happened to you in your life are simply the result of you being in a less than perfect version of the universe. Parallels was the single sloppiest, poorly-thought-out episode in all of TNG because it rendered absolutely everything that ever happened in the show, and ever would happen, completely pointless. All those tense moments when the crew was struggling for their lives, desperately trying to figure out the correct course of action to take, are rendered sterile and fruitless, because the crew succeeding has _nothing at all to do_ with how competent they are, but is simply due to the fact that they're in a universe where they succeed. We see that in one of the parallel universes, Picard was killed during the events of The Best of Both Worlds. We also see that there's another universe where the Borg have completely destroyed the Federation. So all those clever maneuvers and thoughtful storytelling and action-packed sequences are rendered totally pointless. In just one episode, TNG essentially retconned everything interesting or exciting in Star Trek out of existence. All so they could set up a romance between Worf and Troi. Screw you, Brannon Braga.
@Loseirdo
@Loseirdo 8 лет назад
+fartmagizewarth Everything you described is exactly what's wrong with the episode, but I don't think you actually grasp why. First, it's not simply that there are an infinite number of parallel universes -- it's that there is a universe for literally every single contingency in the space-time continuum. In other words, for every choice you could make, there is a universe where you make a different choice. And for every choice someone ELSE could make, there is a universe where THEY make a different choice. And so on and so on. By the end of it, you end up with every conceivable eventuality all existing simultaneously. Like I said, it completely negates any possibility of free will. The actual possibility of "choice" disappears when all contingencies are simultaneously existent across the multiverse. As I said, it renders every tense moment in Star Trek completely hollow by telling us that if it doesn't work out in THIS universe, it does in some OTHER universe. So, essentially, what we're seeing is just one of the many, many realities. If you don't like it, please flip over to channel 53049, where they're airing a completely different universe. Maybe that story will be more to your liking. The thing about Mirror, Mirror was that it only suggested the existence of two universes -- the "original" universe, and the "mirror" universe. It was the duality that was important in that episode, and the duality that made that episode work. Parallels took that and tore it to shreds, saying, "No, there aren't two opposing universes, there are actually quadrillions of universes that are only different on a quantum level". Everything that the series ever accomplished before this was completely destroyed by that episode, and everything that happened afterwards was pointless. For all the bogus time travel and space-time manipulation, nothing even mattered. There would always be a universe where they DIDN'T destroy the galaxy, or they DID complete that crucial mission, or whatever. Every single possibility is realized in the Star Trek universe thanks to Parallels, so there's no reason to feel any kind of attachment to the events depicted in the show, because we, as viewers, know that they are just one of the vast possibilities. As I said, it ruined the show. Lazy writing was the death of Star Trek. That explains the movies, actually. But All Good Things is still the best episode of anything to ever be made. So whatever, ignore my blathering.

A man was walking along an endless beach throwing washed up clams back into the water. Another man approached him and said "Why even bother, there are so many that it will never make a difference". In response he threw the clam in his hand back into the water and replied "It made a difference to that one"

admittedly parallels does mess up the multiverse theory something awful. The general idea of multiverse theory is both infinite in width and depth. Ie there are an infinite number of both different and identical universes. Parallels describes a new universe at each decision made by a conscious being. In summation multiverse theory does not ruin anything... but parallels was shit.

I watched this film yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it, even if it didn't follow the timeline of the original Star Trek (or perhaps did due to the "fracturing universes" theory), it was still a highly competent and enjoyable movie (and this review was brilliant as always Plinkett). I LOVED Star Trek The Motion Picture when I saw it in the theater. It was real Trek and EPIC in scale. It had lots of Stanley Kubrick elements. TOS Star trek was great because of the original actors/characters. This is like going to a family dinner to find your Mum, Dad, siblings and pet dog you've loved since you were a kid have all been replaced with fake people and another dog... all trying to act in a similar way, with lens flares to distract from the heart churning emotions.

My biggest problem with these movies was the random romance between Spock and Uhura. WTF did this come from? It just doesn't match ether of their characters nor did their connection seem genuine or natural. It felt like someone grabbing two actions figures and bashing them together and calling it kissing. Than that's taken and slammed it in my face thru the whole damn movie. There was just no real build up and I know it's not a romance movie BUT since it is a large play in the movie- some more development and possible self conflict would have been much more interesting than this bullshit naggy girlfriend crap.

1) Zoë Saldana refused to sign the contract unless her character had something to do. 2) They noticed a few scenes of Nichelle Nichols jokingly hitting on Nimoy, and figured that had to be an important characteristic, despite apparently not noticing the same thing being much more prominent with Nurse Chapel.

@@djackson4657 Spock having a girlfriend isn't necessarily a problem; Vulcans practice long-term monogamy just like many primates: it's both practical and fulfilling for many. The problem (and insult) is in implying that (1) he would compromise his professional ethics for sex, and (2) that a bridge officer on the Federation flagship only got her coveted post because she sucks a mean dick.

So we spend 25-odd minutes hearing him say how it doesn't really matter, only to go "that's like getting upset about the Prequel Fi- ooooh...." and completely negate everything he just said. Even after all this time, I still find that amusing. Also, how shit, how did I NEVER notice the pizza roll during the intermission sequence? I've watched these videos numerous times and never realized that. To quote Keanu Reeves: "Whoa." But yeah, I quite like Parallels. I'm a firm believer in the multiverse, but that doesn't make the reality we live in any less interesting or important. Unless it's like some comic book sales-drumming event, what happens in one reality is extremely unlikely to affect another. So who cares that a me in another timeline is in better shape with a wonderful wife and cute kids. Although, to be honest, knowing that's a thing does make my more miserable and lonely life a little more bearable. You know, knowing that somewhere out there is a happier me.

Here's the thing - it's a SHIP. Star Trek II showed it best. Like old sailing ships trading broadsides. Thought was involved. Generally mature people doing what they have to do. Star Trek 2009 turned the Enterprise into a fighter plane, Spock into a big Vulcan crybaby, and Kirk into a boring man-child who was unbelievably promoted from cadet to captain. Oh, and they made it in a fucking brewery. Cold filtered photon torpedoes!
