@lehcaraz1
@lehcaraz1 3 года назад
I realized that there was abuse earlier before the reveal. The clues were there. He came unglued when his dad came in the room and busted things and then went out the window. Why, just because his dad came? The mother knew about the abuse because in the next shot when they run to Elliot on the ground the mom is telling the dad this is all his fault. Why would she say that? I felt then something was wrong between Elliot and dad, I thought maybe physical beatings, but also possible sexual abuse. Then the movie theatre sealed it for me . Elliot was so cold and hateful to his dad in that scene. There was something more than him having cancer between them to make Elliot like that and say he could never forgive him. He picked up the Mr Robot jacket and put it on and went in the theatre. (During that whole scene he was Mr Robot because he made full eye contact with dad and was confident.) and he told Elliot who was sitting next to him to shh because the movie was starting. There are more along the way like when he tells Mr Robot his backstory on the boardwalk and he says he dad was so mad he told his mom about his "cancer" that he wouldn't talk to him again till he died. That further proves the mom knew about the abuse and hid it. When the dad died his mom asked him at the bus stop why he was sad, she says the dad was weak and that Elliot should be glad he was gone. She was referring to the end of the abuse.

Therapist here: so to respond to the “no faith in your patient” comment. My traumatized clients/patients need to be guided to their realizations slowly and patiently. If you push a traumatized individual to confront trauma without creating a safe space, or establishing trust, or giving them proper tools to cope then you are asking them to go back to a space where they were just as helpless and in such pain as the original trauma. So basically you are doing the same damage twice. Trauma takes soooooo much time to unravel. Side note, this is one of my favorite episodes of tv ever from a therapist standpoint and also from an entertainment standpoint. Can’t wait to see y’all react to the finale! Love all the work you do
@TomJones-wx5on

Imagine taking away all the coping skills (no matter how unhealthy) and just leaving them with pain rather than replacing those negative ones with proper coping skills first. Especially if those unhealthy skills are what basically kept you alive for decades. That shit takes time.

@@TomJones-wx5on Right? Honestly to me just as someone who loves mental health and wanted to go into it (too much ADHD for all the academic learning honestly) kudos to Krista for doing the best she could with the at gun point do years of therapy in minutes situation she was in. @@mixmymusicplease exactly. also, technically elliot knew the truth, but he was protecting himself from it. i mean, mr robot was protecting elliot from the trauma that could cause him. of course, him knowing the truth is better ultimatelly, but it needed to be a process for it to be safe for elliot to handle. the point of my comment was that defending vera for telling elliot the truth is stupid, because he did it for his own personal gain and not for elliot's well being.

Holy shit I knew the episode was different for stylistic reasons. I didn't like it when I first watched it last night but I could tell there was likely some kind of artistic intent I was missing out on and would only figure out after the fact. The one thing I did click on is the whole thing DID feel like a play like deadass a theatre production with the absurd drama of the backdrop (a storm with dramatic timing) and the angles it was shot from. Honestly I can't even put my finger on it but there was something distinctly theatre like. Elliot DID say Vera just wanted a show and the whole thing was a production put on by Vera with him as the director.

Admittedly, i watched this special VR short where Elliot and her go on a date in season 1 and it adds a lot of context to that relationship. Its pretty dope. I highly reccomend it if you have a headset. If not, i think you can still watch it on youtube, but being a literal fly on the wall for it is sick. I felt for Vera's humanity when his backstory was revealed. But yeah. He raped and then later killed Shayla. He kidnapped, molested, and threatened to kill Krista. He's killed a lot of his goons. Pat...dude...you are good but you have to understand that Vera was never helping Elliot. This is basically how abusive men work. They act all "OOH I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU MY SWEETHEART"....then if we don't bend to their will...they threaten to hurt us..or hurt our friend or relative...make inappropriate advances at the victim...then and the end they act all loving. It was the cycle of freaking abuse. the helping part was the honeymoon/care stage. i know alot about this stuff...and i've seen guys like Vera exist in most media and people romanticise them.

Disagree with Pat. Krista did the right thing. She didn't know that that was the root cause, but I'm sure she had suspected it. And if you go back and see Elliott's aversion to the male touch from pretty much every male character in the series, and his multiple personality disorder, you realize he does hit all the typical beats for someone who has sexual abuse trauma. I'm sure Krista would have led Elliott down that path, if he had not hacked her it made her feel unsafe. It's not a subject that you can force on a patient. They have to come to that realization or their own, or in Elliott's case have him recognize that mr. Robot is hiding that truth from him for his protection. Elliot needed to let his guard down. Viera went about this in the worst way possible. In the real world, s*** like that can break a patient. And it can drive them further away mentally

Infact....no abusive asshole deserves him...even if he was "helping" him...while he sees this as helping...I saw it as a some stupid horrendous ploy to get into Elliot's life as some sociopath on a white horse to clean house. Did he expect Elliot to be grateful????? He is no savior in Elliot's life. I even watched shows like YOU and other stalker stories bc most of them show that no matter what stalkers do...it's no love. When i saw the reveal my immediate reaction was "i guess but were there any hints?". In the next scene Elliot freaks out after Vera goes to touch him and then it clicked, the hint was there from the start. My theory was that Elliot killed his dad, because a) he hid Darlene in the closet b) the bat and c) Vera's story which parallels Elliot's trauma. But i think its better this way; it would have been too ridiculous and unbelievable if that was the case (or if it was both)

Pretty sad that some people are a little too pissed at those who like Vera's character. They're missing the point. Vera is an abuser, and a very good one at that. The abuser has charisma, and can and will give affection, aggression, and most of all, confusion. All while exuding charisma and concealing their very nature by masquerading as a friend. They are reprehensible, and yet can elicit pity, sympathy and even empathy. Of course some people would come to like this guy. Sure, his deeds were disgusting. But put them aside or witness him in the moment, and you might see a visionary. Maybe an idiotic visionary, but still one regardless. It sucks that he had to go. We were in that crowd too. He was a good character. But in that situation, you don't try to empathize with him. Elliot would still be seething in the blow of the revelation he just realized. Krista, well... what would you expect when faced against a kidnapper, abuser, violent addict and potential rapist? IRL, people would try to escape. Maybe not Elliot, but then again, Vera only focused his attention and manipulation onto Elliot. And at the moment of revelation, Elliot was too busy to focus on escaping. There's a reason why Stockholm Syndrome is a thing. Considering how Krista almost seemed incompetent at the start of the series and that Vera actually brought out Elliot's repressed memories, it's not hard to see how Vera 'helped' Elliot. It was for a twisted reason, but it was still a form of 'help' regardless once the help is detached from the helper. Also, go back and notice how in the second paragraph, you can replace "Vera" with "Edward Alderson".

Vera wasn't helping Elliot, he literally spelled out his plan. He wanted to break him so that he could own him forever. All he says is bullshit, the only reason people buy into it is because he's so crazy that he believes it himself. Krista's intent was to gradually guide Elliot through an understanding of his condition, approaching his traumas in the safest possible manner. That of course got interrupted by Elliot admitting to being behind a terrorist attack that took thousands of lives, and you can't really blame her for it.

a lot of comments way off the mark here. vera may have been acting in bad faith and trying to manipulate and control elliot but he did still help him. I think Krista was wrong to keep the truth from Elliot. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to therapy. I think she felt bad for Elliot and didn't want to hurt him more, and maybe didn't trust that Elliot could handle the truth. But, he CAN and DOES handle the truth. He may have continued struggling with his repressed feelings for years. What if he stopped seeing Krista? I think it's better to just be honest and then deal with the fallout.. that's what therapy is for. You guys saying Vera wasn't helping are completely missing the entire point of this episode. In the last episode Vera kept talking about how everyone has a role to play in the world. Vera's role was to help Elliot come to realize the truth. And after he fulfilled his purpose, he died.
