Chiptunes are often made from very simple/pure sounds - square, triangle and sine waves among other things. A tuning fork is designed to produce as close to a perfect sine wave as possible when its forks vibrate - and many of the parts in the Floppotron are likely similarly shaped enough to a tuning fork that, when vibrating, they produce those purer sounds like those in chiptunes!
