Late last year, Tim Dunn - railway historian, TV presenter, scarf wearer and all-round Top Chap - visited Strawberry Hill as part of his filming for Network Rail's "12 Doors of Christmas" series. That video came one of NR's most watched in that series. Tim and Network Rail have kindly edited an extended version of that film for the SETG, which we are delighted to be able to share with you.
Thanks Tim!
As always, if you enjoy the video, please consider lending us your support at www.setg.org.uk/donate. Every penny we raise brings 3417 closer to a return to traffic.

Mr Upton's monologue whilst sat in first class is one of the most eloquent statements of why preserving trains like these is important and worthwhile.

Well said Mr Upton, we need to preserve some of the mundane of yesteryear.

So glad they preserved it. Good memories of them before they were swapped for the awful 455’s which seemingly will never get scrapped… The VEP’s were fantastic. Just noticed that the unit had the route code for Guildford via Cobham which was where I rode them to Waterloo in the good old days before the service was slowed and cut back.

This is epic work. I can't wait to have a ride on it when it's done! Brings back many memories of going up to London with my Mum back in the late 80s and early 90s.

I rode on the VEPs when they were first introduced in 1967. My daily ride to school between Byfleet & New Haw and Walton-on-Thames, as well as longer runs up to Waterloo with mum in school holidays. Really looking forward to seeing this unit back in service somewhere soon. Thanks for all your efforts everyone.

Great sense of humour here, grand stuff! I'll be sure to chuck a quid or two in the pot when I can!

Glad to read that you found it fun - the SETG try not to take themselves too seriously.

Excellent. My own local trains were mainly 4-CEPs, but I did ride the 4-VEPs on occasions. Lots of memories there.

This is gorgeous, I can't believe this is the only one of two still in service, I was part of a small group looking after two CIG units on the Dean forest, sadly no longer with us :( vandals destroyed then beyond economical repair. I would love to help. Would be amazing.

When VEPs were introduced onto the SE Division I had to write a publicity leaflet saying how great they were. Since they were usually replacing HAP or CEP stock, their hard seats and high capacity made this hard work!

Indeed, the HAPs and CEPs were far more comfortable.

They look a lot better in the original blue livery rather than the later blue/white BR livery. Spent many ‘happy hours’ (debate) travelling in these after they were moved to the Victoria/Kent coast routes. Pretty hellish when packed with commuters. I used to stand if the only seat available was the middle space in a three-seater, as it was pretty impossible to sit comfortably, especially if occupied by anyone even remotely obese. But good to see a unit being restored.

I remember the VEP's working out of London Bridge with their lary Gatwick lines on most, it was a train to the bridge then down to E Croydon then to pick up a VEP to Brighton for a day out. Of course the real big hitters were the REP and CEP, I do believe the CEP's had the most powerful third rail EMU traction motors for the boat trains from Victoria and you would see a 12 car set headed with a MLV thundering down to the coast like greased lightning as the MLV had the same power output as the traction car of a CEP so 16 cars power for 13 cars weight made them very frisky :D

Would these have run on the Waterloo Reading route via Virginia Water. Loved these or similar on that router and the secret standard class compartment. Also great to see the old NSE maquette, love it!
