Mrs. Astor and the Academy fiasco | The Gilded Age Season 2

Mrs. Astor’s loyal friend, Aunt Agnes, is at the Academy, along with Ward McAllister and Mamie Fish, but the rest of the crowd there is thin. (Mamie ultimately abandons them for the Met, as her only loyalty lies in whatever the majority is doing.) But where is that damn Duke? It’s like both of these theaters are showing Red, White and Blaine, and he is Mort Guffman.

I hope Bertha didn't outrightly pawned off Gladys to the duke. George's expression after asking Bertha what she did to secure his attendance says alot. There will be trouble in paradise.

I feel sure she didn't. I can't imagine a mother marrying off her daughter for some sort of European title.

I'm affraid that's exactly what might happen, as this part seems to be based on the life of Consuelo Vanderbilt, Duchess of Marlborough

Ashlie Atkinson was hilarious in a single episode of Boardwalk Empire. She appeared as Giaconda Rosetti, wife of ruthless gangster Gyp Rosetti in season three. She portrayed a bossy wife to perfection.

They say it was compared to the MET which was a showstopper funded by New Money.. THe JP Morgans, Goulds, Rockafellers were all New Money families at this time who couldnt get into the Academy I believe.
@soheesweetheart

lol I know right. I believe that is how the Actual Academy of music was described to have looked. No wonder many didn’t show up either, lol. Most of the old money crowd are middle to elder age, they have back and eye problems, whose going to watch an opera they can barely see.
@raphaelledesma9393
@raphaelledesma9393 3 месяца назад
But that’s true. In fact, the main appeal of the Academy was that it was exclusive and small which means they can easily gatekeep who attends. Nonetheless, the reason the Academy is no more is that it burned down and it never got back its place as the premier opera house due to the MET.

Apparently, she has been "toned" down for the show as she was outrageous in real life as were her parties.

Bertha was smart... A marriage of convenience is much better that access to society with no surety of business deals or marriages. The Duke took the better deal, hopefully he courts Gladys so she will want to marry him

There's something at once both fantastic and crude about Bertha. I love how she is soo headstrong and determined but at the same time I literally hate how her relationships with her children is soo transactional. I read more about the real life character and she did really sold her daughter that way.😢

Has anyone noticed how rarely (if ever) we see Mr. Astor in these scenes? Mrs. Astor is almost always with Mr. McAllister for social outings, so maybe she's lonely? Or has a lot of time on her hands to be so preoccupied with social registers and snubbing people from her bubble of influence?

In real life, he was a philanderer and embarrassed her at social events. She eventually got his friends to keep him away when she hosted.
@soheesweetheart
@soheesweetheart 5 месяцев назад
Mrs. Astor deliberately, asked friends of her husband, to keep him consistently occupied, unto late hours, because he was a known philander and drunk, who would inconveniently embarrass Mrs. Astor, especially during social gatherings. Their marriage was an arranged marriage, and a not so happy one. The Moment she gave him a son, they stopped seeing each other. Her formulating of New York High society with her cousins, Mr. McAllister, setting herself as the Queen Bee, was a product of her mental health and coping with her domestic life.

I read that Mrs Astor decided to stay in Newport during Opening Night so as to not be seen to take either side. I have no idea if this is true but I think if so, then the historical Mrs Astor did the most pragmatic thing.

I was kinda hoping that the gilded age and Downton abbeys time lines would run into each other and we'd see a young Cora and Robert eventually lol but it looks like gladys is taking on a similar storyline.
