This is just for a bit of fun!
Emulating an Amiga on a PC is a simple task, install WinUAE and your done. But what if you want to emulate a PC on an Amiga. This week we take a look at a bit of software called PC Task that claims to do just that.
Question is, how fast can my 030 40mhz A1200 run it?

When I was in university I spent an entire evening printing out a handful of EZPlot graphs using PC Task on my stock A1200. It worked but excruciatingly slowly. I think that was the day I realised I needed a PC and my Amigas weren't going to cut it any more.

18:10 It is compared to IBM PC/AT, so a 286 class system, but emulated CPU is NEC V20, co a IBM PC/XT class system (with 8-bit system bus). That is why 8 MHz 8088 CPU is roughly an equivalent to 4 MHz 80286 CPU. The 8-bit system bus is also the reason, why you can have a maximum of 1 MB RAM.

Thanks for the tip about TSGUI. I've been using a commandline image writing utility, and while it works just fine, it's a bit of a faff using. Going to pop TSGUI on my A1200 once I've finished installing it into it's new tower case.

An 8M RAM 8086? Wow... That would have been impressive back in the day... ;-) Nice vid... I had both my Amiga and PC (cobbled together from other people's old parts after helping them with upgrades) back then, so I never used PC Task. And my Amiga then was a plain 1200 with no RAM/CPU card.

I'm wondering if PC Task uses WriteChunkyPixel to address the screen, if it does it should be able to be sped up with patches like FBlit and BlazeWCP which uses the MMU to speed up Chunky-to-Planar conversion, so it could make the games run a little bit faster. I guess I'll try it on my own A1200 later if I can get some PC games onto it.

Please let me know how you get on. Anything that boosts the speed would be welcome.

It would be great if you achieve that Cammy. The biggest drawback on this stuff is video speed. I actually own a 030 50 that can do the task around the original 8088 speed, but video is always holding it down. I remember to use PC-Task back when i had my old 040 33, and it was quite usable, but, again, video speed was too slow.

Used PSpice (circuit simulation software) via PC Task on my mates (now mine for the last 20 odd years...) Blizzard 1230. Was a bit slow, but was good enough, and prevented the need to queue for one of the Uni PC's. Also used to use the Mac version of Word via Shapeshifter on my 1200. The queue for the uni Macs was never as long, so I used to just nip into the computer lab with my Mac disk, fire up a Mac and hit print! Never tried games in PC Task, but I have seen someone on RU-vid running Tomb Raider via PCTask 4 on an 060 Amiga - actually looks okay, albeit a tad slow!

Hi - nice video, i used the IBM transformer / Emulator or whatever it was called on my Amiga 500 back n the day, we used a vary basic word processor ( wordstar maybe ??) at work so any home work was done very slowly. I had the luxury of 2 x floppy which made it a bit easier With the stock 500 the emulated dos was slow and memory was low lets call it @ 400k but enough to run the word processor The only benefit was i could save amiga word docs as rtf or maybe plain text and copy the file to the ibm formated disk - take it to work, load it up in Msdos works and print it of Later when i got my 386 i just used a null modem cable and terminal software and transferred via serial ports - but that was for a short time only as the 386 got used more and more, the Amiga 500 became a games machine only and no productivity software was done on after a while Regards George

Hi - i am usually in 2 minds about floppies 1. if it does not work i bin it 2. i will try and format it on the native machine eg amiga, if that does not work try and format it in say a ibm or apple. I only have PC's now, but at work i have given floppies to a workmate with Amiga and another with classic macs Sometimes a fresh format will fix it all up, but you never know how good it will be or if it will last, nothing worse that something important on a floppy and it fails the next time or some time later. I have had good floppies fail, others that are unused for 10-15 years not work, and some "daily usage" ones still work" Last xmas i reformatted my Pentium 2 with dos 6.22, used all the floppy disks that came with the gateway machine, plus all the driver disks for sound card, ATI video card, and scsi card - they all worked - all made @ 1997 My kids at school had there own floppies, my sons was orange and my daughters green, i have about 2 or 3 of each and 1 failed the rest worked, they sued it every day for homework ( or game swapping not sure ) some of the orange ones were washed with school clothes !!! One thing is if you dont use a floppy the magnetic signal may go weak / bad, so you need to read them say every 6 months to ensure they still work For PC's i backed up most floppy to a image using DCF But year aback in the day when they were plentiful if it failed or grunted it went in the bin, the ones manufactured after cdroms came out are very low quality Regards George

Just to try. I've managed to "resurrect" some old Amiga floppy in a not readable state using a soft heat method. Simply left those take some heat just below my A1200 (w a Blizzard 1230 IV) chassis. After some hours they turned readable. I suppose it has to do with humidity and the internal soft cloth protection of the disk. Avoid, however, those disks that produce too much "rattle" noises, as sometimes it could be harmful for the drive. Cheers, M

PC Task - there's some nostalgia. Alley Cat is the best game on a DOS PC from that time, but not sure why the image is flat and not in standard PC 4:3. Your display is working in full screen at 15.48, so not sure what happened there. Did you play the games on a widescreen monitor? Perhaps PC task needs NTSC to run full screen?

I was going to put an aspect ratio warning in the video. The rgb to hdmi converter stretches the image to 16:9 and there's little I can do to fix it. Adding insult to injury the Amiga also screws things up a bit with its processing of the image so yeah it's a mess in terms of aspect.

There are other games that could be interesting to try on PC-Task. PC-Man, a PacMan clone, had it's own internal clock, and was really fast even on 8088 machines. Some spanish games from the XT era could be interesting either, La Abadia del Crimen, Soviet, Stardust, Freddy Hardest, Mutan Zone, PC Rally, Rescate en el Golfo, Risky Woods, La Espada Sagrada... There are several ones. You can check them on the Computer Emuzone site, it's licensed. If you want to find more titles that could work properly under a 8088-spec emulated PC, you could try ti find titles of french manufacture, from Loriciels and such, they used to work well on XT computers... Sapiens, Mach 3, Bob Morane... Etc. All these titles were programmed with the slow 8088 CGA video and processing power at mind. So, as long as they're not fast-paced games, could perform decently under the slow video speed of the Amiga. Hope Cammy will come out with some improvement on this side. I don't have the chance to test them myself since i have my A1200 being recapped. But these titles are a good start. The only bad point about all this is that i fear the 030 40 falls a bit short for the task. A 50mhz CPU would achieve it. Apogee games like the Commander Keen series, or early Accolade games like The Cycles or Grand Prix Circuit would probably run OK. Ah, DON'T FORGET, to try the "8088 MPH" demo. It would be nice to see how PC-Task handles that little piece of art. I'll be waiting for a new video from you. Thank you very much for the time.

I tried commander keen 1 but it just shows corruption. 8088MPH doesn't work either, just hangs as it tries to load. Might look for another couple of early demos to try. Perhaps these links could help a bit. www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/525_dos_games_from_the_1980s.html computeremuzone.com/pc/?id=games&l=en www.abandonwaredos.com/browse-years.php?pag=573&l=Abandonware+games+by+year+of+release

@@CRG Interesting. I thought that 030's couldn't handle overclock. I have the 2018 rev 3b board, do i need to flash the unit? Another offtopic question, sorry about that. I didn't have the time to test my TF330 properly but i've heard that there was some kind of bug on older versions... Do you know what kind of bug could it be? Thank you!

8086 can’t access more than 640kb of RAM(well with sw tricks you can get up to 712kb). Also that’d be 8191bytes for 8K.

No problem. I always appreciate any comments and I didn't know about the ram limit on the 8086 until another commenter pointed that out. Thats part of the fun of making these videos for me, learning new stuff from all you folk that take time to watch and comment.

The V20 was an 8088 clone and the V30 was an 8086 clone, afaik.

That's interesting, I wonder what lm60 uses to identify the chip since the emulation is meant to be 8086.

The reason you didn't get the full 40 meg when formatting the C drive is because of the MS-DOS version. 3.3 could only address about 33 meg, it wasn't until MS-DOS 4.01 or later that could use a whopping 40 meg drive or bigger. More specifically it's the FAT (File Allocation Table) in use by the version of DOS.
@CRG

After installing msdos 5 I got the full 40mb and probably should of mentioned it in the video. Thanks for letting me know, easy to forget these thing when dos 6.22 is my normal go to version.

@@CRG No worries my good man. I should have said, and you probably know it now anyway, that it's the version of fdisk that imposed that limit, the one that comes with DOS 3.3 has that limitation, while 4.01 onwards can use larger disks. I started off with 4.01, upgraded to 5.0 when it came out, and 6.22 when that came out. I used PC-Task 2 and later 3 on my A1200 back in the day, both when it was unexpanded (as more of a proof-of-concept) and later once I'd added 8Mb Fast RAM and upgraded from the factory 40Mb to a 200Mb. Later I upgraded to an A4000/040 with 18Mb RAM (2Mb Chip, 16Mb Fast, 25MHz 68040) and PC-Task was somewhat usable on that. I don't think I used anything but MS-DOS 6.22 under PC-Task, perhaps 5, but certainly not anything before that. I remember trying Wolf3D on my 1200 and that was extremely painful - the screen transitions took MINUTES as the palette changed.

I used to run Win 3.11 on my 1200 040 + 32 Meg --- it was slow but just about usable. It was more of a novelty than a real use thing. DOS 6.22 was fine, but I usually ran a single disk version of 5.0. Never ran games on it though --- just SuperCalc and the likes...

Yeah I thought you'd need a beefy Amiga to try Windows. What sort of DOS games could you run on the 040?

I wish someone would try running MSDOS within a cascade emulation, something like PC Linux / W.I.N.E. -> WinUAE -> Basilisk II -> SoftPC -> MSDOS. Looks like perfect #DOScember entry! Someone?

That would certainly be fun. If you could emulate a fast enough Amiga you could do Amiga, DOS, Windows, Amiga.
