Thanks, Kip, for this! I've been *trying* to get the flight-planning part of the G1000 figured out. Eery video I've watched seemed to magically progress without me seeing exactly what was done. The UI on the G1000 is "simple" to those who already know it, but it's a nightmare to us noobs. I was able to set up and fly both of these flight plans per your excellent instruction. Super job! My next step is to see if you have any NXi videos.

Via Spad.next (or Axis and Os) ich connected the hardware-knobs to the AS1000 bindings and now ich use a knob from the GNS530 (inner, outer and push) to navigate through my G1000 MFD. It even makes the planning-phase a fun-part.

Thanks for the vid, didn't know you could hit enter on start or end airport to bring up it's info. Thanks for teaching me something new. Could you please go over the real world procedure for programming the flight plan? Would pilots know in advance the runways they're using or do you have to ask when you get to the destination and then program in the arrival while in the air? I would love for someone to cover a quick short flight to explain how to do that while communicating with ATC. Thanks in advance.
@KipOnTheGround
@KipOnTheGround 2 года назад
I do plan to do some full flight type of videos, so it’s good to know that’s what you’re looking for. I’m not a real world pilot, but listening to the ATIS will give you active runways and approach information at towered airports. Until ATC clears you for taxiing and departure, and an approach and landing, you don’t know 100% for sure, but you can be well prepared for what is likely. While the MSFS ATC will give you simple “climb and maintain” instructions for your departure, and also assign you an approach, it will not assign an actual DP/SID or STAR, so if you want to follow those procedures you just need to do it on your own accord in this sim. Hope that helps for now :-)

Yep! I actually like the new "lock" mode in the sim, though some despise it. Another trick that works with many knobs is to hold SHIFT while using your mouse wheel. It will double the rate at which it turns, e.g. it'll move 2 degrees or 200ft or 2 letters at a time instead of 1.

@heyjoe9302
@heyjoe9302 2 года назад
Excellent video as always, Kip. I learn so much from your tutorials and it makes me enjoy MSFS more. One question. When I enter a departure or arrival procedure, I sometimes get a waypoint called MANSEQ. This creates a gap in the flight path. Do you typically delete MANSEQ from your flight plans when they appear? Or do you delete the whole procedure and find one that doesn't have MANSEQ?
@KipOnTheGround
@KipOnTheGround 2 года назад
Thanks Joe! MANSEQ is a "manual sequence", which is a leg in the flight plan where you have to (as it suggests) manually sequence/advance to the next leg in the flight plan. This isn't something that MSFS ATC handles correctly, but during a MANSEQ in a departure/arrival procedure, you'd expect to get vectors/headings from ATC, and then eventually be cleared to continue on course. Once cleared, you'd advance to the next leg in the flight plan by pressing the SUSP softkey on the PFD. If you don't want to deal with the step of manually sequencing, you could just delete the MANSEQs before encountering them. It wouldn't be as realistic but it'd be convenient :-) It'd be great if MSFS ATC handled departure and arrival procedures more thoroughly in the future, but for now they're very simplified. Hope that helps!

You forgot to mention how to insert a waypoint in the enroute section. I learned that yesterday: highlight the waypoint that you want to “move down” and just start rolling the inner FMS knob. Easy, but not very intuitive.
@KipOnTheGround
@KipOnTheGround 2 года назад
Ah, yes you're correct that I didn't cover adding a waypoint between others. I think of it almost the same way, but as "where do I want to add the waypoint", so if you highlight the second waypoint, the one you enter becomes the new second waypoint. Thanks for pointing that out.

I understood how to create the starting point and ending point from inside the MSFS main map screen and understood how to plug in the various way points but how to actually have it display the flight plan. When I tried even though it was stating a starting point a leg and an ending point, the pink link only showed from starting point to leg, it didn't also show the ending point. Thanks

Kip on the Ground: Excellent helpful video. You are to be commended for your easy to understand strategy. I flew this exact route using every word of instruction and it was just like you said. Question: I cannot get my Range knob to range in and out. Could you explain how I can get it to work. You seem to just push the knob and it zooms easily for you. Also, somewhere along the line, I lost the MFD image of the route. I did however, view it on the VFR map. Perhaps there is something I can do to zoom in and out to see and follow my FPL. I did discover that by turning on the Nav mode, the FPL was followed automatically down to runway 25. I was surprised that I did not have to switch from GPS to Loc 1 to intercept the localizer nor the GS Glideslope. It was automatically done, even from 2700 ft at the iaf to the faf at 2500 ft. Have learned a lot from your amazing teaching. I heard you say, one could join your discord. What is that all about and if I did, what should I expect?

Nice clear presentation, but I have a question about the flp, I see that all the waypoints are the same altitude is there anyway to select each target altitude for each waypoint, cause in the navlog it has the right altitudes for each waypoint, but the flight plan just shows one altitude for every waypoint, any thoughts on this would be appreciated

Excellent video. Quick question: For some reason, my NXi always opens new trips with an IFR flight plan prepopulated when I choose to fly IRF. It asks low or high route IRF, then populates waypoints in the flight plan. I'd rather start from scratch. Can this be shut off in the settings?

Hi Kip! Great job on the video! Just what I needed. Two questions: 1. In World Map, we have the option to Save our Flight Plan; Can we do the same after putting in the Flight Plan manually via G1000? 2. How do you associate the Flight Plan to the Autopilot, or can it be? Do you have to manually move the Heading to follow the Plan? Thanks so much! Gus
@KipOnTheGround
@KipOnTheGround Год назад
#1 I'd have to test, but I'd guess no -- the "save" menu while in the sim/plane I believe will just save the state of your flight so you can resume it, though I've never used it. #2 yes, generally your autopilot's NAV mode will be coupled to the GPS so it will follow your route. First, make sure the G1000's NAV source is set to GPS (magenta colors on the HSI; if not press the "CDI" soft key to change it so it reads GPS and is magenta-colored) -- not VOR1/VOR2 (those are for navigating by VORs, not GPS). Next, you need to fly close to your course before NAV mode will activate. You can see me explain this here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fA2tDXZx1s0.html

@KipOnTheGround
@KipOnTheGround 2 года назад
It's part of the newer "Lock" cockpit interaction system. If you're on "Legacy" then you won't get the highlighting. You can change between the two under General Settings > Accessibility > Cockpit Interaction System. If you haven't used the "Lock" system before, you may need to reset your mouse settings to the default profile (use the blue arrows under the word Mouse in the control settings area to choose "Default". then rebind any custom mouse settings you had before). I'd recommend enabling the tooltips under the Accessibility area too for a bit until you get used to how to use the new system, because it can be a little confusing at first.

LOL I got pulled over in Baraboo by a tribal cop who gave me a hard time because I was still going the speed limit from the outside town before the speed change, but I saw him right as I saw the reduce speed sign and stopped before the speed change. He threatened to take my license because I was from MN and out of state. I told him I was on my way home from a ship and I had been at sea for 2 months and I let the speed get away from me, and apologized. I looked like shit from working my watch before getting off in Port Inland MI. Anyways he did a double take when I said that, ran my license, and called me sir when he let me go. He went from asking me what I was doing in his community because I didn't "have any connection here" to "have a good day sir, drive safe" pretty quick.

Thank you for yet another great tuotorial :-) When entering depaarture aiport, is it possible to use the 'nearest' list as a shortcut? Since we are alredy at the airport in question - presumably this would be a fast way to select the departure aiport. Awesome video. Really helping me get a grip on this. One question though. On the first plan you programmed the approach, and on the second plan you programmed departure and arrival. How to you know that the waypoint given on skyvector or simbrief is a waypoint for arrival and not for approach? Or am I missing something here? (probably am, as I am just starting with this). Could you also add approach even if you have arrival programmed?
@KipOnTheGround
@KipOnTheGround 2 года назад
Thanks! For the second flight I programmed in this video, if I actually flew it, I would have been assigned an approach by ATC into KBOI when nearing the destination. I'd then use the PROC menu to add the assigned approach. I also could have looked up the most recent weather info for the destination airport (or ATIS ideally) to take a guess at which approach I would likely get, and pre-program it. When ATC ultimately assigns you one, you'd just use PROC menu again while in-flight to load the approach they actually assign, if it's different than the one you guessed. Hope that helps!

To go from Direct-To back to flying a leg in your flight plan, open the FPL screen on the Garmin, and use the FMS knob (press it, then turn it) to highlight the waypoint you want to fly to. To activate the leg between the previous waypoint and the one highlighted, press MENU, highlight "Activate Leg" and press ENT. To fly from your current location directly to the highlighted waypoint, press the D-to button instead, then ENT twice to activate it.

Very helpful video! I had been trying to program flight plans from scratch using the PROC page instead of the FPL. I was noticing that while the flightplan looked correct, once i arrived at the end of the departure procedure, the system seemed unable to move to the enroute/arrival/approach procedures. I'm trying to understand conceptually why that method of coming at it all from the PROC page doesn't work. Do you know? Separately, i'm wondering if its necessary to have at least one enroute waypoint. I was trying to go from L35 to KPSP using the RWY 08 departure out of L35, and then, because the airports are so close, directly into an approach procedure for KPSP, RNAV 13 I think it was. Is that possible to do?
@Nork393
@Nork393 Год назад
Ok, after some more experimenting, I think my issue actually had to do with my choosing VECTORS as the transition option rather than a transition at one of the IAFs. In a VTF approach, when the flight plan gets through its enroute waypoints, does it then wait for the pilot to instruct it which of the waypoints to vector to, rather than automatically heading towards the first waypoint in the list? If so, whats the proper way to tell the autopilot which waypoint to head to? Seems like you can do this with the DIRECT TO function, or with the ACTIVATE LEG function in the MENU.

Great video! Learning the G1000nxi on the P100 but I ran into a problem. I’m routing EGPH06 GOSAM1D P600 BLACA DCT EGAA25. EGAA has no published arrival, so I end up with an enroute section that terminates at the waypoint BLACA. The next waypoint is the CF for runway 25. This results in the leg from BLACA to CF25 not connecting. I realise I can go direct from somewhere on the previous leg but I’d like to flight plan to be continuous so that the TOD and VPTH is correctly calculated before I depart. In the Airbus I could just clear the lateral discontinuity and link BLACA to CF25 but there doesn’t seem to be any way in the G1000 to link the last enroute waypoint directly to an approach without an arrival. Is there a way around this?

With the NXi specifically, you will be able to do this with Sim Update 10. It’s supposed to be released this week. Here’s a video I made about the updates coming including the ATC sync: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-U8UtAwcpDqo.html

What if ATC gives you an other runway after programming everything into it ? 😲

They could even give you a new route in an IFR clearance, too :-) Just need to be able to react to it and program in the changes!

Great video, much informative and clear, but a bit to fast :) My brain don't work in that speed....

Being a stupid rookie i always thought flying would be fast bcs you go just the beeline between A and B, but all those VIAs and airways makes it like driving a car in some roadworks-infested city. Why are all those "detours" necessary, i can also go a straight line guided by GPS, which is probably very "un-pilotly"?! ;-) Nonetheless thanks for your teaching us :-)

If the weather allows it, you could definitely just fly VFR directly to your destination! IFR lets you fly in non-ideal weather conditions, though it comes with more specific routes that ATC will assign you as part of your IFR clearance. For this video, I intentionally chose several different IFR routes to demonstrate since a direct-to flight plan is obviously much simpler :-)

@@KipOnTheGround Understood. If you can't see a thing you want as much "lighttowers" as possible and small steps between them to find your way ;-)

This system is incredibly frustrating to learn. I can follow well enough step by step, but each menu seems to have five sub menus which have five sub menus which again have five sub menus. And each input at whatever level seems to affect something where I have no idea on what tier subsystem it’s relevant to. It is one of the most unintuitive, clusterfuck interfaces I’ve ever seen. I input departure, arrival, then I attempt to do approach and it for some reason deletes everything I’ve previously inputted. I would love to understand how to manually input waypoints and airports, to change destinations on the fly, but I guess the world map will have to do. I’m trying to experiment to get a feel for how this system operates. Yeah right. This thing is a fucking nightmare to use.
