KIP that is a GREAT video. Those little tips really help us understand the G3000. Initially I didn't like the night flights but I realize the contrast for the instruments really works. You are one of only a few that use night mode for tutorials. Keep'em coming! !! !!!

Great video, I like this level of realism + fun + sim. Some videos dudes go WAY to into it, heavy moded sims and they refuse to use any sim features (ATC) or shortcuts, or any QoL assitance. Your style is the one I enjoy. You explain the stuff but you explain how to do within the game tools and in a fun way. Ie, I know how to set the BARO manually but I just hit the B button on my keyboard.

Thank you! I definitely like that kind of balance for the sim too. Using the mouse just feels so unnatural so IMO anything you can do to keep your hands on the yoke/stick is best, so I like to take advantage of all the shortcuts, while still knowing what they’re doing for me.

Hi Kip, another great tutorial. So I got 2 quick questions. At what point do you enable approach on an ILS flight and the 2nd question or more of an observation…when I try and enter my ILS radio frequency for the localizer I press activate but it’s not adding this frequency to my MFD. is this a bug you think? I’m playing on an Xbox ( for now, building a PC soon). Thank you sir.
@KipOnTheGround
@KipOnTheGround 2 года назад
Hey Beni, thanks! Approach Mode on the autopilot can enabled any time during your approach. As long as you enable it before the final approach fix (FAF, which is where you'll capture the glideslope), you'll be good. Just make sure you're switching the CDI (nav source) over to LOC1 or LOC2 for the ILS. You can give the G3000 mod a try if there is an issue with swapping the NAV1/NAV2 frequency, but I haven't flown the TBM in a while so not sure if it's a known issue. Make sure you press the "XFER" button after entering the new frequency in the standby field. You can find the G3000 mod here if you want to give it a shot: www.workingtitle.aero/packages/g3000/

Kip, along with my previous message, I am having a problem with all of my autopilots on several airplanes. When tracking a course, instead of crabbing into the wind as in real life, the plane enters a bank to counteract the wind and flies that way the entire route.. You didn't seem to have this problem. Do you know what I can do to fix this problem? Thanks
@KipOnTheGround
@KipOnTheGround 3 года назад
Weird! The whole route? The autopilot should bank to change your heading into the wind to compensate. I’ve never seen it not go wings-level after getting to the necessary heading to stay on track though! If it was constantly banked, I’d expect it would constantly be turning. Do you happen to be using any mods?

I've had that happen to me before. I think what people have been saying about MSFS is still unfortunately true -- it's good for VFR, but not IFR. They still have a LOT of work to do. I learned how to fly the TBM 930. I can land successfully in any airport using ILS. I never inserted the VOR frequency, at approach, the TBM switch from GPS to LOC the ILS automatic. Is that the best way to approach and land?
@KipOnTheGround
@KipOnTheGround 3 года назад
I always have the approach chart handy in case it doesn't automatically change over to LOC1 for me, and AFAIK it's standard to always have briefed the approach using the chart before flying it, so it's up to you how thorough you want to be in the sim :-) Sometimes I'll just let the G3000 do the work and not worry about it if I'm doing a more casual flight. I love using the ILS since it's both lateral and vertical guidance, and having around 200-foot AGL minimums is amazing. But I'll generally just use whichever approach the ATC assigns to me. If they give you a visual or other approach, you can use the ATC window to request a specific approach like the ILS. Since not every airport has an ILS, it's nice to be familiar with the different types of approaches, so you really can fly anywhere :-)

@KipOnTheGround
@KipOnTheGround 3 года назад
Unlike the airliners, you won't get as many callouts. You'll get a 500 foot warning, and a "minimums" warning if you've set up the minimums (I believe the "minimums" callout isn't working in the stock/vanilla MSFS yet, only in the G3000 mod made by a team called Working Title. So if you're flying the TBM a lot, I'd recommend checking out that plugin here (bottom of the page): github.com/Working-Title-MSFS-Mods/fspackages It's actually going to be integrated into MSFS itself! Microsoft hired the Working Title team as contractors to implement it, so I bet we'll see that later this year.

Great Video Kip, and thank you, it has helped me greatly. One question, you are using SimBrief instead of using the in-game flight planner with IFR low alt airways. Is the reason for this simply to demonstrate the authenticity of manually inputting the waypoints or are there other benefits?
@KipOnTheGround
@KipOnTheGround 3 года назад
Yes, i used simbrief just to get a route to manually input. The world map is mostly how I do it, but sometimes I’ll use simbrief if I’m using OnAir company as it gives useful info like fuel calculations. In both cases I usually will import the simbrief flight plan file using the world map too, to save time. But you can use whichever way you prefer :-)

@KipOnTheGround
@KipOnTheGround Год назад
First, lemme say that a LOT will be changing in the TBM's G3000 when the "Aircraft & Avionics Update 1" comes out for MSFS (as soon as this week even). It got an entire overhaul to be much more realistic and feature-complete. If you love the TBM, you're going to love it even more. That said, adding (or editing) waypoint altitudes is for using VNAV, which will be fully functional after the update. When loading an instrument procedure like a Departure, Arrival, or Approach, altitudes will already be loaded in for each waypoint automatically from the navigation database. But, you can add a VNAV altitude to any waypoint yourself, or edit the existing altitudes if necessary. If you want a preview of the capabilities the G3000 will have, you can look at the G1000 NXi and its VNAV capabilities that I use it in this video (the NXi has been updated a lot since this video too): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C-nlNQYdx9c.html

I found you need to tweak it a little bit in the world map. There are two drop down boxes underneath the location you want to land at and you have to select them. It takes some trial and error to find which options work best for a good approach so you can catch the glide slope, but it works. Alternatively you can always just manually land since your IFR will get you to 3000 feet with a good approach to the runway.

Kip, Excellent and clear video. This is the second time I watched as the first time I was lost as a newbie flight simmer. One question I have is that when setting up the approach initially in the G3000, you loaded but did not activate because you were too far away. Then as you neared KPSM, you activated approach on the AP. At what point do you do so in the G3000, or is it necessary or redundant to activate the approach in the G3000 if done thru the AP? BTW, initially your takeoff clearance said Pease and not Portsmouth. As a local to the area, I know that KPSM was/is Pease and was mainly a military air base. Viewers might have been confused by that if they caught it.
@KipOnTheGround
@KipOnTheGround 3 года назад
Hey DH. Thanks! There are two separate things, an approach activation within the G3000 and also an approach mode on the autopilot. On the G3000, activating the approach just makes the initial approach fix (IAF) the active waypoint in the flight plan. When choosing an approach from the Procedures menu, you can choose to either load or load+activate the approach. If you're in a situation when you want to head immediately to the IAF of the approach, you'd pick the latter option, e.g. if ATC assigns you the approach and then clears you to the IAF ("e.g. RNAV 21 approach via DARTS transition. *Cleared to DARTS*"). If you're just pre-adding the procedure to the flight plan but aren't ready to actually head to the IAF yet, you'd just use "load". Once you cross over the IAF, the G3000 will react mattering the type of approach. In the case of an ILS, it will automatically tune to the correct Localizer frequency and switch to LOC1/NAV1 mode (instead of GPS). Both lateral and vertical guides will appear on the HSI and altimeter on the G3000. On the autopilot, the Approach mode will activate the autopilot's ability to capture the glidepath/glideslope of an approach that has vertical guidance, like an ILS or WAAS/GPS LPV approach. When enabling APR on the auto-pilot, you will see a white "GS" in the right area of the autopilot status on the PFD indicating it's ready to capture the glideslope. I believe approach mode also adds some level of higher precision to the lateral guidance as well, but would need to double check on that :-) Hope that helps. I didn't realize it said Pease and not Portsmouth! Weird.

Thanks Paul! I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but you can set up the different autopilot modes before you actually enable the AP itself. So before you take off for example, you can actually pre-arm HDG mode and FLC mode for your initial climb. Then, when you finally arm AP, it's already set up to continue your climb.

For this approach you have to overfly PSM, then fly outbound on radial R-165 to IDEED. There you have to do a Hold in lieu of PT (Procedure Turn) with one minute legs where you descend to 3000’. The proc. Turn will allow you to make a 180 degree turn and align yourself with the 345 degree inbound course. During the PT you capture the localizer and then fly it down as a regular ILS, what you know how to do. It is a big no-no just randomly taking a different route than depicted. What if there was an obstacle there (a tall antenna or something) or in mountainous terrain a mountain ? The approach charts are very precise for exactly that reason. In fact during the approach the GPS precision gradually gets more and more precise and the same with the localizer and glide slope. You can download the NACO approach procedure from skyvector.com or directly from the FAA website. It is a great learning tool. Regards and good luck with your learning.
