This video is a review of the MSR Access 2 tent. This is a lightweight 4 season tent with composite tent poles. This 2 person tent is huge and yet weighs just 1.86kg. On paper this winter tent seems to good to be true. You have the choice of using this backpacking tent as an enormous 1 person tent or you can use it as a proper two person tent.
A true four season tent should be strong, have low fly edges and have plenty of solid mesh. A 4 season backpacking tent should be able to withstand all sorts of harsh weather conditions and keep you warm too.
MSR makes some great backpacking gear. We own lots of their camping gear including other MSR tents. The MSR Access Two is MSR's winter tent. However, I do have some issues that I bring up in this video. I've not massively impressed with this tent and it looks like the new MSR Hubba Hubba may have been pulled from production too. The Easton Syclone Composite tent poles sound great but I think they are too flexible even if they are unbreakable.

This is what they say about the MSR Access 2 backpacking tent:
Built to be the ultimate shelter for backcountry skiers, splitboarders and snowshoers, the Access 2 tent is lighter than a mountaineering tent, but warmer than our backpacking tents. Limited mesh on the tent body offers greater warmth on frigid nights, while the light and packable design saves you precious energy on the climb and descent. The interior is spacious for delayering, and the strong frame resists overnight snow loading. Quick to set up, the tent offers the protection needed for camping in less severe conditions, such as those near tree-line-making it perfect for accessing the bowls, ridges and powder fields above.
Ultralight Warmth: Limited mesh on the tent body keeps in all that hard-earned warmth on cold nights, while the light design keeps you nimble while skiing, riding or hiking.
Easton® Syclone™ Poles: Advanced composite materials resist breaking in challenging winter conditions.
Robust Frame: Central-support frame optimizes interior space and resists snow loading.
Quick Setup: Unified hubbed poles make tent quick to pitch in cold environments.
Additional Features: Rainfly vents reduce condensation; Xtreme Shield™ waterproof coating for long-term durability; two doors; two internal pockets; multiple guy points.
Includes: Tent body, rainfly, poles, stakes, guy lines, easy-load, wide-mouth stuff sack, setup instructions.
Floor Dimensions (Metric) cm: 127 x 213 cm
Floor Area (Metric): 2.69 sq. m

Another good review Andy, thanks man. Nice tent but you’re spot on about it not being quite up to harsh UK wet n windy weather requirements by the looks of things, especially at that price level. 👍🏻

Unfortunately it just falls too short for UK weather as a 4 season tent. It’s still a lovely tent though!

I feel I have to defend this tent, I own multiple Access versions and stand by how good they are as an ALL ROUNDER. Yes, you can get much stronger and more wind resistant, with a weight penalty. The Access will struggle above 45 mph winds, as would most (I have been in and measured the wind) - but I would avoid camping in those winds anyway, as you wouldn't get much sleep - even in a Hilleberg due to noise and flapping around, yes I know you can get caught out before someone has a go. Many seasoned Scottish campers, some on RU-vid testify to this tent as a good all rounder and I would agree. I love the space and tautness inside, and they are fully waterproof....most tents leaks through the stitching and panel joins, not through the body of the panels - and the quality in that area in the Access is excellent. Yes it dances around a bit in the wind, but the poles literally are unbreakable - I have already seen a Hilleberg Soulo BL with a broken pole and damaged fabric as a result (currently £925), so nothing is truly bulletproof. For clarity - my argument is for this tent as a great ALL ROUNDER and stand by it, I love all my Access tents and use them in all weathers. It is not worth £700 though that is for sure - I got it for less than half that amount, and the previous version which I feel is better than the new version anyway.

Yep, from my point of view, the more I have paid for something, the more care I would take of it. I’m not paying £1000 for a tent to watch it get stressed, deformed and shredded. I spent many nights in my wild country trisar (before they changed to Terra Nova) in minibus temps with the wind and rain rattling the tent. Then I decided one day that getting two of three hours sleep was not actually that much fun, so I change plans as and when I’m out there. And yes the Access is a great all round tent!

Have to agree with what you say. Have used both the Access1 and the Access 2 on many trips including the Cape Wrath Trail and found it to be a fantastic tent for space and weight. The two person was also great for my wife and myself when doing the TGO challenge across Scotland from one side to the other and never had an issue with it. Along with many summit camps as well. Just be aware of its limitaitons and dont go out wiith it summit camping during a storm. Will add that I have been caught out a few times on long trips and it held up fine. However the prices are just getting silly now.

@andyholtorp
@andyholtorp Год назад
@@Marksnowden1 that's the ultimate question! Depends on so many factors - budget, weight, space, strength - thats why I love the access, a good all rounder. It also has to be the right tent for you individually, your needs are going to be different from others. I have just bought a Terra Nova Voyager, another great 2 person tent that ticks a lot of boxes - I would just get all over RU-vid for detailed reviews and come up with a shortlist, then if possible, go and see them in person before commiting - good luck
@carlrichards5250
@carlrichards5250 Год назад
I also own an Access 2 (sold my Akto after seeing my mates Access 2) and think it’s a great tent. The 4 season relates to camping in snow in the US. You would camp lower down and build a snow wall etc to protect the tent. It seems only the British knowingly go to the top of a mountain with gale force winds to “test” their tent out! Nothing is more miserable than getting little sleep and having to drive back home the next day - you had to ride home on a motorcycle absolutely knackered in one of your videos! The last time I used my Access high up was on Grizedale tarn and we had torrential rain and wind for 17 hours. The tent buckled and flexed but stayed up and kept me dry. Now i go up to the top, take a few pics then drop and pitch further down and get a better nights sleep! Also if you leave the bag behind (110g) and change the pegs for titanium and carbon you can easily save another 200 grams! Unbeatable for the type of tent. Check out Norwegian Explorer- he camps in all extreme weathers but always preps the area to ensure his tent is protected.

I can only review it from a UK point of view. MSR officially sell it here to a vast number of retailers. They sell it as a 4 season tent, 'above tree line' tent and a winter tent. If they sold it as the ultimate 3 season tent and the price was closer to £500 it would be a fantastic tent but that's not how it's being sold. I love the look of it, the space, the vestibules, the unbreakable poles and the solid mesh with vents. However, it's a very expensive tent for what it is. The HH rating is very poor for any tent, you don't get enough pegs to pitch it properly, the poles are really flexi and the fly don't come down far enough. For this sort of money, and to sell it officially in the UK as a 4 season tent, it needs to be better.

Yeah, fair enough Andy, it’s YOUR review. Really enjoying the channel and the gear reviews. Please don’t turn into one of these channels where its all about spending a fortune on a tent and then recording yourself “surviving” a night in 70mph winds. Those vids are getting boring very quickly!
@barryfullick7981
@barryfullick7981 Год назад
@@carlrichards5250 Hi Carl, that gets 'a "me too". I recently unsub'd from one channel for the same reasons. It was just tedious repetition of more of the same. I now just take a quick look to see if that loyal, loving companion of his is is still ok, and then move on to watch something which informs me of places I havnt seen or new aspects of places I have, and which appeal to my sense of the aesthetic. Im not saying everything must be picture postcard perfect, far from it. Ragged wind torn cloud of a newly arrived Atlantic depression, being further torn apart as its blown across and over a rugged landscape, has its own majesty and stirs my heart and nourishes my soul, just as much as a misty dawn over the Norfolk coast or the open expanses of the Cambridgeshire fens where the horizon is ten miles distant. To each their own, and no one is compelling me to watch the stuff Ive grown tired of, but when I see the vainglorious "aren't I the hero" nonsense, being endlessly regurgitated yet again, I cant help thinking " what a tw*t".
@carlrichards5250
@carlrichards5250 Год назад
@@barryfullick7981 exactly! I think people are leaving these channels as it’s just turned into repetitive survival stuff, often destroying good gear with conditions never intended for it. I was on an ML course many years ago and we were taken up to Styhead tarn in gale force winds in winter. The leader was quite happy to watch all our gear get destroyed before declaring we needed to bail at about 1:30 am as all the tents had been destroyed. One guy had the flysheet of his brand new tent ripped out of his hands which disappeared over the edge never to be seen again. I noticed the leader didn’t bring his own gear, but had agreed to share the tent of another person on the course. I prefer stuff now with more interesting cooking ideas and different views (I’m amazed Andy Wardle has such low subs!). Also, I’m not sure I would take my dog out in extreme weather. I’m damn sure she would rather be at home in front of a roaring fire than stuck in a tent with me (especially the next morning when I’m grumpy from lack of sleep!)

Agreed with your comments. Not 4 season. That's a decent summer tent with a winter inner. I wouldn't trust that in anything more than a stiff breeze and drizzle. The HH isn't fit for a Yorkshire summer! 😂 The Helm 2 is better than that at over half the price with only a slight weight penalty. That's only fit for summer, and in that case I'd save a load of money and but the mongar 2! Virtually the same tent at 1/4 price.

Uk and Ireland is as severe as your likely to encounter. Even on my summer hiking trips the wind and rain can whip up . Apart from snow load , I reckon when it comes to tents , wind is the biggest factor. I’ve got a Helm 2 and it’s stood up to some harsh conditions. I’m of the opinion it’s basically subjective . You make a good point about the tent not being suitable for the mountain tops in bad winter weather, but even the lighter Hubba NX tents are good and strong enough for winter camping at the lower levels. I’ve had MSR Hubba NX and Hubba Hubba NX for about 10 years now and they’ve withstood some awful weather and I’ve never had any water get inside. I know they tried a different manufacturing method 5 or 6 years ago and it was disastrous, the tents leaked, but I believe they went back to the old ways and all is good again. My experience is they are bombproof in bad weather. Just maybe, as you say, not for mountain tops in the worst winter weather 👍🏻😬

This tent design is ubiquitous now, from really expensive tents like this one to the Naturehike budget tents. I dont really see much difference in the brands other than different fabrics etc, and the design of the poles doesn't seem very robust to me, as in the vestibules aren't supported by any poles and rely on the peg out out points to hold them in place, which means they'd blow inwards in strong winds. Also theyre all inner pitch first, which is a faff in bad weather! I've just bought the Vango Force 10 Nexus UL2, its a brilliant tent. Pitches all in one, lightweight (under 2 kilos) loads of space and a strong design with cross over poles, all this for £250. Thanks.

Many good points, but I will also defend this tent a bit. I spent September in the Himalayas climbing an unclimbed peak. I used the MSR access 2 as an attack tent to save weight. mainly pitched on a glacier. This tent was actually designed for use in snow, not sideways rain and not really for high wind. But it has the insurance, that despite high winds, its poles wont break. Many of the best 4 session tents pitch inner first. Quzars. North Face V25. Tango's, that is not an issue per sea. Inner pitch tents have far far better inners. This is also the case for the MSR. The inside is excellent for long periods (another reason I took it) and taught as a drum. However, it is too small to be a proper 2 person tent (at least for me at 6 foot 4). It is made of very light weight materials won't wear well long term I don't think. I agree it is not a proper 4 season tent. However as a very spacious one person tent. With the added bonus that though it may deform, if caught out in storm you'll be ok. Its extra pole makes a big difference.

Those composite poles look mighty thin, given the strength / weight of CCF another mm or 2 in diameter would add a lot more stiffness with little compromise in weight. Personally I'd rather invest in a Northen Lite 2

Msr poles are so flimsy, I've lost count of the people who have had a problem with them. And there always inner pitch first. They look fantastic and the martials used are always good, but somehow they just fall short for me. Especially when they charge what they do, and in this instance can't even supply you with enough pegs..

I don't understand the meaning of such expensive tents on the market? I think £200 tents also work very well, this is completely a premium for reputation. Go and have a look at Floating Cloud 2, I have bought Lanshan 2 since, the quality of this company is good. A real civilian tent, not a luxury.
@Im_With_Stupid
@Im_With_Stupid 17 дней назад
You're definitely paying a name brand markup, but you're not paying only for reputation. You're paying for customer support, available parts and repairs, a living wage for company employees, insane business taxation and research and development. See, all those cheap Chinese tents on the market, while they might be good tents, are 99% just copies of designs and technologies that MSR, Big Agnes, Nemo, etc. invested in bringing to the market. If Naturehike and 3F UL had to make those investments themselves, make parts and repairs available, pay ridiculous US business taxes and US/European level living wages you'd be paying $400 to $800 for their tents, too. Even as it is, one of the biggest reason they cost so much less is because the Chinese government is deliberately undercutting western companies to put them out of business, at which point their prices will increase substantially. They're doing a real bang up job of it, too, because so many people don't care where their stuff comes from or why it's so cheap. They care about pinching pennies so they can spend the difference on even more Chinese knockoffs.

Anyone else wondering if MSR are living on past glories? There was a time when I coveted MSR gear, not any more though. The UK uplands are rarely other than reliably wet n windy so often that its beyond understanding why any tent maker trying to sell into the UK market still makes these silly toy tents that pitch inner first.. And far too much mesh in tje pursuit of light weight. I believe that silly fad originated in Southern California where it is appropriate to the climate, but since we only experience summer roughly once in every thirty years, using that as a construction method is frankly ridiculous for a UK tent. Almost as ridiculous as all the b s about star-gazing through the mesh inner on warm summer nights. One last moan, stop bragging about YKK zips. Apart from a few specialised zips, they are just bog standard mass produced cheap chinese stuff. If you really want good zips source them in Italy. Yes they cost more, but premium priced kit deserves premium components, not the cheapest the makers think tjey can het away with.
@BackpackingUK
@BackpackingUK Год назад
So many brands have now outsourced to Asia. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. What makes me laugh is people who moan about buying Chinese gear (e.g. Naturehike, 3F UL Gear, etc) and preach about human rights, animal welfare and climate change, and yet have no idea 90% of their expensive gear is made in China, India, Vietnam, Taiwan, Thailand, etc, etc.
@Im_With_Stupid
@Im_With_Stupid Месяц назад
They're not trying to sell into the UK market. They make tents and sell them wholesale to whichever distributors and retail outfitters order them. The tents come with an information package that's going to outline their use primarily in it's main market which, for MSR, is going to be the United States. That means for use outside the US that information either needs to be qualified at the point of sale or the user needs to have some understanding of what they're buying and where it's coming from and based on that what they can reasonably expect in their particular use case. Even in the US there are places and conditions you do not want to use this tent in the winter regardless of what kind of tent it's described to be, but on the whole it's still a good 4 season tent, though there does seem to be an issue with those poles. I mean, you can't simply say "Well, MSR says it's a 4 season tent, so that means it's okay to pop it up on top of this mountain exposed to constant gale force winds and heavy rain and it's supposed to be fine." The same is true when the shoe is on the other foot, too. UK style tents in the US don't come with a warning that they weren't designed to perform well in the average US climate or have their descriptions altered for the US market.
