MSR Access 2 Tent Overview.

My new winter tent setup is the Four Season, MSR Access 2. Fairly lightweight, strong and with excellent internal space, what's not to like?
This is my review having owned a couple of these tents over the last few years along with the MSR Access 1. I have used the Access range of tents throughout the years, from stormy mountain summit wild camping trips to several multi-week long distance hikes across Scotland.
They have performed really well in some atrocious Scottish conditions and so far they have never let me down. However this time I decided to get one again purely for winter camping and it wasn’t based on my past experience with them, or their performance. But just the bright, or should I say retina splitting bright, orange colour 😊
Also maybe check out this channel where he has managed to create an outer pitch first hack 😊

I prefer inner pitch 1st and have only ever had this pitch of tent! It means you can move it about if you want to change the position too. Never had a problem with heavy rain while setting up but I also proof the inner as well. Love the colour and will look brilliant for night shots.

I've used inner-pitch-first tents for 40 years. Never once had an issue where my inner interior got soaked because it had to be pitched first. Sure, the inner can take a touch of rain as you toss it out flat on the ground prior to pole attachment, but nothing prevents you from quickly covering most of it with the fly while you connect poles and get them into the corners. Once poles are "up" pull the fly off the inner and drape loosely over the poles, reach under the fly while you bring up and attach the inner's clips. Viola.....dry inner during rain!! I own a couple of all-in-one pitch Hilleberg and fully appreciate the "perceived" advantages when the tent is small enough to pack solo but the thing I love most about the all-in-one idea is the very thing you can't enjoy with a heavier multi-person tent. It's pretty cool to throw my Atko down in one fell swoop and have ground cloth, inner, and fly all act as one piece. But with their bigger/heavier tents it becomes necessary to divvy up poles, ground cloth, and fly between hiking partners. This, for me, rather negates the benefits of an all-in-one pitch where ground cloth, inner, and fly all go up in a single effort. So pitching my larger Hilleberg ends up being rather like pitching my inner-first tents from a "process" standpoint: Get the ground cloth and poles from hiker #1 and get that staked down. In get fly from Hiker #2 and get that up. Then get inner from hiker 3 and crawl inside fly to attach inner. Re-stake for tautness and guy things out. Procedurally it just ends up feeling no less complicated than my inner-first tents...and maybe a touch worse. I might feel differently if I'd ever been caught out in a deluge so bad that it made me grateful for the ability to crawl under the fly to pitch the inner but, while I've been caught out in many many many rain showers, none have ever been quite that bad.

Very true and thanks for taking the time to make this post. I have never had an issue yet and don't understand why so many get all in a fuss about this type of tent. Thanks again and Atb.

A year ago i got my Hilleberg Soulo for 450 Euro (385 £) and it was only used for two nights and then the owner decided it was too heavy and sold it brand-new. I even got it with the sand color that i wanted. Since then I have used this tent everywhere here in Switzerland and last Winter in the Swiss Mountains and in the Snow where I live. I just recently used it for three weeks on Corsica. It is a dream, but I totally agree with you on the price. The MSR Access 2 looks like an amazing tent and I will definitely check this one out. Cheers

I sill prefer all in 1 pitch, or a tent where you can pitch outer then add inner. Far to often than not the weather is wet and blowing a Gale. Same when striking camp, pack inner away whilst still inside, then you can pack everything else away before exiting and taking down outer.

@@Andrew-dp3jm No I’ve not filmed how to do it but it is quite easy even in poor weather. Start with the MSR footprint which has lugs for the poles to slot into. Once the poles are up throw over the fly as normal secure it as usual except the doors which dependent on weather I either leave or loosely peg down. Then you can open the tent and get out of the wet at this rage you can put your pack inside even or just sit in it until things clear up. Or you can get on with clipping in the inner from inside. It’s easy to do except the transverse pole that can be a fiddle but is still okay even in trying conditions. Then finish the doors and guy out. I practiced in the garden quite a lot before doing it on the hill. Hope this helps.

Wow, that's bright 😎. Colour preference is a personal opinion of course... and yes. it will 'pop' against a dark night sky. Thanks for the overview. Buy it's footprint, most free standing tents use that (or webbing) to enable you to set the outer up first, then clip the inner up from inside sheltered from the rain. If it's stotting down when you put up a tent, it doesn't really matter which comes first, just as long as you when you're done, you can't feel it on your face when you finally crawl into your sleeping bag. It will all dry tomorrow...

Nice video, my current favourite tent is the Wechsel Exogen 1, which is also inner pitch first. I've found that condensation is another factor that means your inner is almost always going to get a bit damp with tents that pitch/ pack away all in one on multiday trips(unless you manage it routinely with a towel)

Tarptent makes all their new DCF tents with "double zip" sipper pulls. My TT Notch Li has them but my older TT Moment DW and TT SCARP 2 do not have them. C'est la vie. In my long backpacking life (I'm in my 70s) I've owned 3 double wall tents that required me to set up the INNER TENT FIRST. Got it soaked a few times while setting up in the rain. THUS... now all my tents are Tarptents that set up with the inner then PRE-ATTACHED and the poles running through EXTERIOR sleeves on the fly. Now the inner tents stay dry while setting up in the rain.

MSR Access 2 is very similar to European brand tent Zajo Litio 2 (2.3 Kg) and Zajo Litio 1 (1.7 Kg) - both with the included footprint - which I use for alpine bivouacs. (model 2017). Zajo is with 5000 mm floor and the price for 1 P was 100 € and 2 P was 160€. Very durable and can stand heavy rain and wind which is often in the Alps. The USA-made stuff is often too overpiced for what you get.

Sound advice about the inner & outer. I’ve never actually thought of it that way even though it’s obvious. I think in the last few years tents have got more expense. Wondered if it’s because it’s becoming increasingly popular past time. The orange did bring a certain warmth to the inside. Very nice indeed. Cheers! Andy

The tent itself is very aesthetically pleasing! The jury is still out with me on Y connecting poles (tbh tho, I've even broken a straight pole out of clumsiness, but they're easily repaired on the go). The weight is great, but it is pricey, not Hillie pricey, but still... Wondering if spraying inner with water repellent affects the inner breathability and therefore the condensation? Interesting tent and review, atb Sinco

Given the cost of DCF and the minimum quantities manufacturers have to buy, I can understand why MLD said no. My own dream tent would be a Solomid XL with a Terra Nova Voyager-style double zip window/door. Solid wall inner sized to be taut with the tent pitched hem to ground. Colour: subdued, possibly camo. I used an inner first pitching Tadpole for 8 years. Also a Mountain Hardware tent. They saw an awful lot of use but there was only one occasion when I had to pitch one in heavy rain. Drizzle, on the other hand, many times and they just didn’t get all that wet by the time I had the tent pitched. Inner first pitching in the rain turned out to be no real trouble. I hope I haven’t just jinxed your next few pitches. BTW, I have a Duomid now and I’m sticking with it.

Don't mind what colour a tent is as long as it's a nice subdued green. That looks to be a damn fine tent sir! Normally I worry with US tents that they're made for 'thru-hikers' on trails through interminable forests, but that MSR model seems to have the wind covered to UK specs! Might look at one to replace my ageing TN Voyager.

another good video and I understand your reasons for choosing the colour but this is the advice if camping on Dartmoor ( my local park) and surely it applies elsewhere. "Stay out of sight - backpackers should use very small and lightweight tents which easily blend into the landscape. Part of the enjoyment of experiencing the National Park is its unspoilt and vast landscapes, so it is important that other people’s enjoyment of Dartmoor is not impaired by tents dotting the view."

Great Video Ray, I have had my 4 season tent for years, brought it in 1996 made by Woods! in Canada, i have looked after it re-sprayed it, the design is just like the 4 season tents we seen know, but the weight is 7 half pounds!!! So this is on my list to upgrade, few questions one how is it for condensation? can not see any venting on the tent? want is the weight? how many pegs do you need to carry mine is 14! Like the idea of the bug-cord on the ends and never thought about spraying the innner which will help when trying to get it up in a snow or rain storm want kind of spray did you use Well that's it got me Googling the MSR Access 2 and lets not for gt the after service i have been talking to them for years great people getting gear replaced fixed that helps a lot for me. Light coat of Nikwax TX-Direct. (Nikwax TX.Direct® Spray-On has been specifically designed and optimised for breathable waterproof garments; it leaves a flexible water repellent treatment on individual fibres allowing moisture vapour to pass through, maintaining breathability.) Not much issue with condensation and if any it is on tent flysheet and not inner. However in deep winter moisture freezes so you get areas of ice on inner flysheet. Atb

The Duomid? I also hate the long reach out to get to the zip. Being a bit dim I'd never thought of the double zip solution though! Brilliant idea. MLD should do this. I can't see that it would add more than a couple of grams to the weight or hardly anything to the cost, but would be a great improvement.

Hi Dave, I had contacted MLD twice about adding a double zip and they stated nobody wanted a double zip and he didn't see any benefit to doing it. So in other words he is not planning to do it at any point. Also asked about doing the tent in black ( actually the dark grey DCF fabric) and again he said nobody would want that. Finding with lots of tent manufacturers that they are stuck in there own ways and think no matter what that there design is best and doesn't need any improvements or upgrades. Atb

I like a tent that you can pitch the fly first, and keep the inner second. and freestanding, and thats why i maybe going for the southern cross 2. and still light enough for an solo hiker. Gerard.
@RS.Outdoors
@RS.Outdoors 2 года назад
Many seem to prefer this and never understood why. In all my trips and multi day hikes have never had an issue with inner first even in the wildest Scottish weather. The benefit of multi setup is that you can pack the tent easier in a rucksack with separate parts. You can also put flysheet on its own on in the outer mesh section to dry whilst walking if needed. Note that many also like an all in one pitch but find if you roll it all up together the next day after rain the inner gets soaked as you compress it all together. As for the Southern Cross which i owned a long time ago I found it to be one of the worst tents I have ever owned, but just my own opinion ;) Atb

Great video. Looking at getting my first backpacking tent with a budget of up to £200. Is the ELIXIR 1 a good bet for some munro and corbett camps between april and october ? Was also looking at the robens starlight 2 but want to keep the wait down to around 2kg
@RS.Outdoors

Not sure on the Elixer 1 and would maybe save up little bit more and go for the MSR Hubba NX as it is good chunk lighter. There is also the TREK 900 ULTRALIGHT 2 PERSON tent from Decathlon which is 1.75kg and only £179.99 when back in stock. Great tent and 12 month return warranty for any reason. So try it out and if you don't like it you can say it was leaking and get full refund ;) Would check out Andrew Parks YT channel as he has reviewed most tents out there. Note I have a couple of tents coming soon to try out that may also fit the bill ;)

I can't tell if you have the "2022" model, which uses Easton Syclone poles, which are a type of composite that is lighter, and more flexible than MSR used in the Access, Hubba Hubba and others previously. I mention this because some people complained about the older poles breaking, but the Syclone poles are extraordinarily flexible and almost impossible to break.

@RS.Outdoors 3 года назад
Sadly I do not have a massive budget like most folks. So I have to sell one to get another depending on what I was wanting it for. Also nice to try out other things. the Robens is a great tent but a bit too heavy for me. When I say that remember I am also carrying several Kg of photo / video gear and this is often why I try to cut weight down on the camping side. If I didn't have all that extra weight then the slightly heavier tent wouldn't bother me. Atb

Nice tent, always liked the look of the Hubba HP but never actually bought one, preferring to stick with my Phoenix Phreeranger. Agree with what you said about pitching inner & fly together, said exactly the same on an instagram post 2 weeks ago, pack away even with just condensation on the inside of the fly and the inner is soaked when you go to pitch it again. I prefer fly 1st though as you can get under the fly, sort your wet gear and even cook before thinking about hanging the inner but the inner tent does usually hang looser. We have a Quasar and have managed to pitch it in a downpour with the fly draped over everything while we got the inner pitched. Do MSR do a footprint for the Access that allows you to pitch the fly 1st? they used to do one for the Hubba HP.
@RS.Outdoors
@RS.Outdoors 3 года назад
Think you can with the footprint and need to look into it more. Myself I have never used a footprint. Dont see the point in having a lightweight tent to bump up the weight with more material to carry, unless it is more something like a piece of polycro Atb
@Flexaret
@Flexaret 3 года назад
@@RS.Outdoors I certainly take your point re. the extra weight, when you've managed to get the weight down you soon reach a point where reducing it by even 100g starts to get insanely expensive, adding 200g + by carrying a footprint doesn't on the face of it make a lot of sense although in my case at least I couldn't in reality feel a 200g difference in pack weight. I carried a footprint out of necessity, a 20+ year old tent (30+ now) with a leaking groundsheet meant I had little choice. It's always a compromise with gear, there are always lighter options and often we choose a heavier option because it offers a benefit, perceived or real while others may make their compromises elsewhere.

The inner tent is about 90% solid fabric with just a couple of small mesh traingles for ventilation. This keeps the draughts out and so makes the inside warmer in cold weather. It also has an extra cross over pole that goes around middle of the tent. Also has an extra 4off guyline points but MSR dont provide the guylines for them.

@RS.Outdoors 3 года назад
Just found your comment hidden away in the system. Take what you want from my videos at the end of the day. As for the MLD tent which I will say again is that it is a fantastic tent. However I do not like the dcf colour it is currently manufactured in and the fact I would like a two way zip. When it comes to buying tents I do not have endless amounts of money and can only have one or two tents max at a time. It is often the case I have to sell one to buy another. I bought the MLD for doing the Cape Wrath Trail and hoped it would be good enough for some photography. The main reason I go out into the hills and mountains is for photography, hence winning several national awards. So I had to sell the MLD to buy the MSR in orange was going to be the tent I used had we got out this winter. It is a pain you need to add things to tents such as the MSr but no tent is perfect and all have a niggle or flaw of some description. Have been saving up for a new tent to duse on the Cape Wrath this year which I have wanted to try for years and just arrived. Even this and it's eye watering price I feel needs to be tweaked to get the best out of it. Atb
