I absolutely love these guys. I am so thankful that they maintained their humble surroundings (and budget). I think had they taken the show to Hollywood, it would've ruined the "home" feel of the show. I am so thankful for their creativity and that they were willing to utilize their creativity to entertain us. It will be a pleasure for me to pass on the MST3K "legacy" to my kids. :-)
I really enjoyed back in the 90s when I would get up before pretty much the rest of the dorm and go into the day room to watch MST3k Saturday morning. Great times.
I would give anything to have been a part of the making of MST3K. I think that would have been the most fun job in the world, and only a handful of people can claim to have done it. How amazingly special that must make them feel!
I always felt that way, too, about the closing theme. It always made me kinda sad. Then, when the very last episode aired, it was downright depressing! I truly miss this show.
I remember I heard Rifftrax, then the very first episode I saw was "Space Mutiny", which had the Rifftrax crew and is perhaps the best movie of Mike Nelson's run. So since then, I always default to Bill (wishing no offense to Trace).
Actually, at the time this was filmed, they were involved in making The Film Crew, which was cancelled after only a few episodes due to some legal issues. (Jim Mallon, who owns the copyright to MST, didn't want Shout Factory putting out the MST dvds and also producing The Film Crew because it was so "similar" to MST) So, they did Rifftrax to avoid any legal issues with "resembling" MST3k.
I really liked The Film Crew, too. The riffing was on point, the movies were meh but at least not annoyingly bad, and I liked the comedy they got from The Boss character. I also think the best ever Mike Nelson filmed bit, came from the Film Crew episodes. Specifically the Robichet bit. If you know, you know.
I actually fast forward the segments between the movies on an episode of MST. The ripping of the movies are the GOODS. It's cool they have Rifftrax but you can't rip a good movie. It's not the same. Still love the originals though.
@sipioc RiffTrax has started doing old shorts and bad movies again. Cinematic Titanic is much more like MST3K... but, without robots, neither of them are the same vein as MST3K.
@MichRockHop81108 Yes, go to rifftrax.com and you can buy the tracks ranging from 0.99 to 5.99 or you can get the pre-synced DVDs for usually 9.99. Any other prices will be on the website. Which reminds me, I need to get the Titanic Rifftrax to watch in the theater in 3D next year.
The one riff that gave me the strongest reaction was from "Deathstalker." The movie gave a very brief appearance of some barbarian-looking dude with a beard. And to illustrate (probably) that he'd just been eating, they had what looked like drops of glue on his face and beard. I guess it was supposed to be food; barbarians aren't known for their table manners. Quoth Tom Servo: "Guess what I've been doing!" And I thought, "UUUUUUGH!"
@MichRockHop81108 RiffTrax is Mike Nelson, usually Kevin Murphy, and sometimes others... such as Jim Crobett (the 2nd Crow, Brain Guy). They riff on more famous mainstream movies. You buy their audio track and watch the movie (Matrix, Iron Man, etc) with their commentary on the audio. The original founders and creators of MST3K- Joel Hodgson, J Elis Weistein, and Trace Beaulieau, along with Frank Conniff (TV's Frank) and Mary Jo Pehl (Mrs. Forester) do "Cinematic Titanic" with old Sci-Fis.
I was there almost from the beginning, maybe six months after they started on the Comedy Channel (later Comedy Central) to the bitter end on Scifi. I love them all, but I spend most of my entertainment budget each month on RiffTrax. =P If I had to pick a favorite episode, I'd say TSCWSLABMUZ. Favorite sketch -- MRxL.
i think most people feel that way more in part cause Trace had 7 seasons with crow while Bill only had 3 so i think most lean toward Trace more where Joel & mike have an even split of 5 seasons so it's easiar to draw a preffrance between those two, but i like regardless of preffrance they were all great
Did Keven ever produce that TV show about his movie year? Also, Mike will always be Neoprene. Polyvinyl Chloride is too low a ploymer for such a talent.
Favorite MST epp will always be Horror at Party Beach, grey, stupid, racist, absurd, bad science, crappy music, 30 year old teens, incredibly stupid monsters. Location scouting done by trolls. there just is no end to the ballet of stupid that is "Horror at Party Beach"
Bill Corbett has plenty of excellent Crow episodes: Space Mutiny, Prince of Space, Overdrawn at the Memory Bank, Final Justice, Pumaman, Final Sacrifice..
+Travis McDonald Maybe Trace was better as Crow, but my thought is, "If he's willing to work on my favorite show and do his best, I'm gonna love him for it."
