DUDE! That was awesome. We did it early this morning, left the car park at 7ish. We missed the the track at first and started to the summit route until we realised. I rebuilt the rock cairn and carved an arrow in the direction on the tree behind the cairn as well. We cut across using a goat track until we found this track. We then missed the marker and ended up way past your wikilocs track. But provided for some great photos and challenges. We found our way back to your track and up to the cave. Totally worth all the effort we went through to get there. We got lucky with a beautiful breeze the whole way up the climb. Coming down was much easier and we made a few mental reminders of our own to use as reference points next time and I built another knew rock can at the entrance marker we missed on the track. Stump on the left, cairn on top. We're going back to do the summit next time. I found it relatively easy, some hairy moments but easily dealt with and nowhere near as taxing on my legs as I thought. 2hrs up 1hr down and probably spent a hour up there. Thanks for the video really helped me prepare for today. Can't wait to do it again.

Mate, that is awesome to hear. Well done! that you rebuilt some Rocky marker cairns - very helpful. Not sure if you've done the summit before.... If not, you'll absolutely love that, until you notice it's big brother Mt Barney blocking the view.... And then the thought process is, "You're next!" Yeah, Maroon Caves.... I love it, honestly one of my favourite views any time of day. Thanks for getting back to me and letting me know, appreciate it Heaps. Cheers... 👍👍👍

@@jelbuilderfilms Yeah we're planning a day trip to the summit to work out a few things and then going to do an overnight hike and stay on top of the summit for sunset and sunrise. Definitely one of my favourite hikes now.

Hey mate, do you know the which mountain that is directly in front of Maroon from the cave you can see a trail going up?
@jelbuilderfilms
@jelbuilderfilms 3 года назад
That's Knapps Peak (651m) at Knapp Creek Scenic Reserve Park. I don't think it's accessible due to private land all around from my understanding.
@jelbuilderfilms
@jelbuilderfilms 3 года назад
Actually, you can access it. Here's some info how to get there: www.southee.com/Bushwalking/Ch13-BarneyBallow.html#page192 I've yet to do this one and another nearby peak called Ben Lomond - which currently apparently is closed off by land owners.

@@jelbuilderfilms What an absolutely epic day!!!!! My original crew bailed for various reasons so i went solo. Not really wanting to go and find the caves in very unfamiliar territory alone, I was just gonna go the main trail, but i met up with some randoms in the car park who wanted to team up and do the caves as well. We did the caves, but then we continued on to the summit via the west ridge. Man that was a heck of a climb!! Really feeling it now!!!

@@Spacegoat92 Hey, that's awesome. The views are great from the caves, aren't they? It's good you were able to buddy up, you never know who you can meet. Yes, you will feel it tomorrow too, 😂. I had a bit of fun too trailrunning this arvo as I explored Spring Mountain, here's my trail: www.wikiloc.com/trail-running-trails/spring-mountain-summit-from-new-beith-52997679 A great ridgeline trail only 30 mins from home with some awesome views.... but Mt Maroon is still the king!

@@jelbuilderfilms And I know what you mean about Mount Barney of in the distance taunting me as well haha. It looks so easy when viewed from the top of Maroon. I did Spring mountain as well a while back, but I started from the white rock side and walked along the fire trails. Just over 20km and 5 hours for that one. Nice view from the top as well hey?

Looks like another cave peak combo to add to the list! How long does the hike take?
@jelbuilderfilms
@jelbuilderfilms 4 года назад
Actually, this is a great little hike. Takes around 30-50mins to get to the caves from the Cotswold Rd carpark, obviously depending on pace. Very nice and fairly easy, only hard part is the scramble uphill from the firetrail to get to the trail under the Maroon rockyface. Good fun though, and the best views from the cave. Depending on time and energy, a good route is then from the cave west around to the ridgeline of maroon, and all the way up to the summit, and return down via the usual maroon tourist trail. Prob a 4-5hr round circuit all up but a great way to do it.

Can this be done as a solo hike or would you be best to do it with someone?
@jelbuilderfilms
@jelbuilderfilms 3 года назад
Depends on what kind of a hiker you are. This is perfectly fine as a solo hike and quite easy, however there is a steep hill climb just before the caves. If you struggle with steep uphill terrain, then maybe take a hiking buddy. I prefer solo usually as I like to keep my pace up, and I enjoy exploring offshoot trails and rugged terrain, which most people hate. The guys I took on this video are not that into hiking, and one struggled with the uphill section, and we had to leave him midway up, and help him down on our way back. You'll have no problem with this if you've ever gone up to Mt Maroon Summit before.

@@jelbuilderfilms cheers for the info. Doing it for the first time this weekend but will be bringing a friend with me and possibly someone that's done the summit before but not the caves. Is it anything like Tibrogargan? I've done Cooroora and loved doing that one but I won't do tibro that freaks me out too much. We both like going off track and exploring goat tracks when we find them.
@jelbuilderfilms
@jelbuilderfilms 3 года назад
@@chuzeychuze9905 That's great to hear. No, Tibro is waaaaay more risky, especially that initial Rocky climb. No, this is nothing like that. The uphill climb will burn your thighs though, bit loose too here and there, but there's loads of things to grab and hold. Just remember, keep going up until you hit the cliff wall, then head right or westward, and you'll come to the amazing caves. ..👍👍
@chuzeychuze9905
@chuzeychuze9905 3 года назад
@@jelbuilderfilms I actually found the chicken run goat track on tibro to get past that initial climb at chicken rock. Still a little difficult bit easier and quicker to do because not many people go that way. But that's as far as I went. The track kind of disappears a bit but you can pick it up again.

@@chuzeychuze9905 Hmm, never noticed that track... I'll check it out next time I'm up that way. Actually I recently did Tibro and put up a video about it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IMk4Eik7BPE.html It's a great little mountain to get the heart going.
