Mt. Rainier Railroad & Logging Museum Steam Train

The Mt. Rainier Railroad & Logging Museum has been a mainstay of steam operations in Washington for over 30 years, with numerous operational steam engines. During the summer months, the railroad operates weekend service between Elbe Station and the shops at Mineral, a leisurely seven-mile round trip. At Mineral, passengers disembark for a tour of the logging museum and engine shop.
Polson Logging Company 2-8-2 70, a 1922-built Baldwin, leads this weekend of excursions. This logging Mikado was restored to service by the Mt. Rainier shops in 2010.

They put Mount Rainier Railroad and Logging Museum #5's Ashton 6 inch 3 chime whistle on #70. For a while between 2013 and 2019 it was on #17.

What happened to Climax number 10 and Heisler number 91?

The 10 & 91 will need to be rebuilt to run again. The railroad is shut down right now, so that probably won’t happen for a while.

Then I must have made a mistake of my Heisler number 10. I thought that 10 and 91 were still operating. I don’t know much about geared steam locomotives. What I do know about them is that they have 3 types. Shay Heisler Climax.

Great job on this. I rode behind the Hammond engine, and it is an experience not to miss. An aside on the 7011 F9a. I was crewhauling when it rolled into Balmer Yard in Seattle with new paint. The old heads were reminiscing to no end, and to be honest, I never expected to see an F9 roll in in consist. I won't name the engineer that was instrumental in getting both it, and the MRSR going. It has an appearance in the Disney movie "Born to be Wild" as well.

What a beauty that beautiful looking iron horse doing her job actually used doing it too in the past there is nothing like the echo of the whistle in the mountains and iron horse going through it just sends a chill down my spine seeing the iron horse go through the mountains

I tell you you don't really see logging railroads anymore especially the ones that use the shay locomotives always thought they were pretty looking going up the mountains especially at Cass West Virginia

So how many (operational) steam locomotives does this railroad have and do they mainly operate them in the summer or how often?

Right now their operable engines are the 70, 2-8-2T 17 and Williamette 2. Normally the railroad operates a weekend schedule from Memorial Day to October, plus specials for Christmas.

As of now, the 70, 17 and Williamette 2 are operable. Everything else will need a full FRA inspection to be rebuilt. No word what engine would be rebuilt next.

maverick13_ bro unfortunately 5 has just been sitting since 2003 and while I’ve heard a lot of rumors about its restoration there has been no evidence to support any of them .The number five is my favorite engine of all time and I’ve never seen it run in person I hope I will someday

It was always the oddball for American Heritage Railways. Mt. Rainier isn't a huge all day draw compared to what Durango or GSMR are. It was clear that Mt. Rainier never fit with what AHR wanted, and Covid only sped up AHR wanting to sell off Mt. Rainier Railroad.

They are former Amtrak, but are three are originally Pennsylvania Railroad.

It came off of Porter Number #5, and is a favorite whistle of the crew's, and 70 is the crew's favorite engine just like Number #5 was when she was operational. So it makes sense that 70 would wear the Ashton 3-chime.

@@evanf1293 Never say never my friend, as of June 2020 from Trains Magazine, new owners are currently trying to be found to start up the business again, when we'll get to see action on this railroad again is unknown, but hopefully sometime next year or in the near future, we'll have to wait and see

A shame this railroad happened to be one of the many shortlines rocked hard by the onslaught of COVID. By least, I heard the news of them planning to make a comeback two years from now in 2025, now that it's over. I wonder if they'll still be using this and their saddle tank engine.

While the pandemic shut the railroad down, it’s clear it didn’t fit in well with American heritage operations. The railroad coming back once again as an independent will prove better in the long run.
