MOUNT ROSE TRAIL 💦⛰️🌲Hiking the Sierra Nevadas - Episode 3
The hike to the summit of Mt. Rose may be the most popular trail in Nevada as is evidenced by the full and overflowing parking lot on the weekends. On this hike you will get some incredible views of Lake Tahoe, Reno and Sparks, Various mountain peaks such as Mt. Tamarack, the 70 ft. Galena waterfall, and a spectacular show of wildflowers along Galena Creek and in the meadows. Mt. Rose is the 3rd highest peak in the Tahoe Basin and therefore deserves to be hiked!

You’ll start the trail at the parking lot of the Mt Rose Summit and will climb the gentle rising trail into the forest. Along the way you will see lots of Woolly Mules Ears and Lupines adding a variety of color to the hike.
Once you get to the forest of pines you’ll continue to climb the eastern side of Mt. Tamarack. Occasionally the forest opens up and you can see Lake Tamarack 400 ft. below on your right. Also enjoy the brief but beautiful boulder garden.
After 2 miles in you will descend into the Galena Creek Canyon. Waiting for you is the 70 ft, Cascade known as Galena Falls. You’ll continue on past the waterfall into a beautiful meadow with various creek crossings and tributaries of Galena Creek. You will see many wildflowers and if you are lucky you may even spot an Arizona Thistle.
The next section of the hike becomes serious as the elevation gain is non stop. You will pass through the boundary of the Mt Rose Forest and then encounter a series of 5 switchbacks up to the summit. There is no reprieve as you continue up. Soon the terrain changes and becomes loose dirt and gravel.
The summit will likely be packed but still offers beautiful 360 degree panoramic views. If you continue past the summit you will see another viewing area on the mountain, which I highly recommend.
