Great video! Looks a lot busier than when I rode it a few years ago - out from Lancaster, over here, a loop around Gisburn and back through the Trough - a tougher day out than I imagined :)
Yeah it was a strangely busy day. Sun had brought people out I think. There is a fair few lumps in that area, which makes it tiring. Need to pack climbing legs 😀
Cracking Vid Ian. Love the running commentary, very educational and informative. Was watching this with my 18 year old daughter (she's seen another video - Walna Scar) and the first thing she said was, "ohh wonder what he's got on his sandwiches today" 😂😂 Keep up the great work 👌🏻
Great picture quality, best I’ve seen yet thanks , it also gives me a good idea what to expect as I plan on doing this soon , only from hornby or Wray as slightly less climbing. I think 2hr each way should be ok for me , surprising how many was on this roman road so your not too alone . The shooters track to the Roman road is known as bottom road climb on Strava about 300ft down 300ft back up , ive been on that part only I did t know it was illegal as a was stopped by a ranger with a shotgun! I saw up there the 3 chairs which I highly recommend seeing on clougha pike . I like the remoteness up there and also the roeburndale part I have done on a road bike and was fine .
Yes should make a nice winter ride mate. Its a good surface pretty most of the way. You can turn it into a loop with the Trough of Bowland if you dont mind lots of road miles
@@davidegan8712 yes, a hardtail would be absolutely fine. I've done it on a cyclocross bike. Felt a bit underbiked on that but hardtail ideal for this.
Been thinking of doing this route, but trying to make it into a loop, not too keen on just turning around at the end. Route looks easy enough to try when the weather is not too good.
Fantastic video, I'm currently getting back into riding after a back injury, would you be able to give a few directions, or roads to look out for? I live in Lancaster, just how to find the start of this ride? Cheers for the great vids
Hi mate, I'm in Lancaster too. I started from near Littledale Hall, but you could also go from Caton. You want to take the road that starts at the Black Bull Inn. Climb to near the top and turn left. Then keep climbing and this takes you past the caton moor wind farm and near the start of this video.
Thanks for replying really appriciate it. So is that head up littledale Road hang a left onto roeburndale Rd then follow signs for the bridleway? Thanks
From Caton climb from Brook House by the pub up Littledale Rd, and then Roeburndale Rd. It's a long climb. Then turn right near the end of that road to descend a bridleway. Keep following that bridleway to end up in Roeburndale. Turn R at a T junction l and follow that lane which turns into the Hornby Road after a farm
Hi Maria I use OS maps when planning rides and I take them with me, but I don't produce route maps if that's what you mean, sorry. The guidebooks I wrote for the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales do contain OS mapping though.
I've done it on a cyclocross bike and the rockiest bit has been resurfaced since so yes you should be fine. Just one section which is a little bit rocky but it's not too rough.
