MTG - An Old Man HATES Planeswalker Cards in Magic: The Gathering! 

I quit magic and when I restarted someone played a card and said that it was a planeswalker. I replied that I only had mountains and no plains so why'd it matter? It mattered...

I agree! Planeswalkers created an unbalance in MTG. So when I play with friends, we always follow the rule of "only one planeswalker, in a deck". That way, it functions more like a "joker".

"Pfffbpfpfbpfbpfbfp!!! I DON'T LIKE PLANESWALKER CARDS!" - sums up my thoughts perfectly. I came back to Magic and saw these and was thoroughly confused. Like, "Okay, I'm a Planeswalker in-game. I control lands and tap them for power, cast amazing spells, and summon mythical creatures and bind them to my will. Sure, no problem. But now I can summon another Planeswalker and bind ~them~ to my will, presumably a being close to my own power level? WTF kind of sense does that make?!" Lore strangeness aside, they also add more corner-case rule issues, and most importantly are kill-this-immediately-or-lose cards more than any other type. Now the Legend rule, that change is fine by me. I'll agree that it makes no sense in a lore/flavor view. But from a gameplay perspective it was damn stupid that you could be prevented from playing a card just because an opponent played it first, so I'm they changed it.

Just started to see your videos a week ago. I had to look back from the bottom of what you´ve made and catch up. =) I love this mini-series inside your channel. Your opinions matter a lot to me Proffesor and the fact you´re puttin them out trough a wise elder person put emphasis on what most players agree with, just in this case sound powerful when you are hearing it from a person like your dad. Maybe he doesn´t know a thing about Magic but it force me to shut up my toughts and listen to something I could easily ignore if its coming from a person of my age. Great aproach! These are all very good points. Having had to face down many planeswalker cards from opponents during the first two months of ever playing Magic including a deck a guy had that ran 4 different planeswalkers, it's especially brutal. A Planeswalker-free Standard would be very interesting to see and play in.

Wow, what's it like to have a loving and supportive parent? I'm just blown away!! I do feel there should be a rule that only one planeswalker should be allowed in the deck. You should only have a 1 in 60 chance per game to get him out! It would also make them more economically feasible, who can afford 4 Jace the Mind Sulpter or Liliana of the Veil

I remember after watching the first video I did the math in my head. If he was 18 (in highschool as the video states he was) when MTG came out in '93 then that would make him about 39 now. I thought each player was playing the role of a Plainswalker, as portrayed in the novel Magic the Gathering: Arena (got the book and cards - Arena & Sewers of Estark)... so happy I kept all my vintage unlimited and revised cards from college (93-97).

I do agree about the legends rule. It's kind of destroys the fantasy when gideon is fighting gideon. I think we should bring back the old legends rule when if two appear at the same time, they both are placed in the GY.

While I like Planeswalkers as a card type (neat fonts of flexibility), and I enjoy the opportunity for story telling they've opened up, I do think there may be a bit of... saturation. Or at least overlap. If we're going to continue to get a relatively constant stream of Planeswalkers, I really hope the creative team at Wizards takes the time to give them legitimate impact on the lore and a place in it. And on a similar note, try to give all the abilities individuality, but with an overarching theme, that flavor both each other and the Walker. Don't just swap Jace's hairstyle for another Final Fantasy wig, shuffle his various "draw and/or mill and/or ponder" effects around, slap on a new title and call it a day. Look at Ugin, he's got great impact and flavor in the lore (master of colorless mana), cohesive effects that fit his character (ghostfire and the anti-Bolas), and while familiar to lore fans, he's still cool enough on his own to keep people interested. If you can't think of another substantial update to an existing Walker, make a new one! There's plenty of neat interactions you can do with the various colors. An example I've always been fond of was a red Walker who, in the lore, spent most of his life studying runic red magics from various tomes he's gathered on his travels. Thus, many of his abilities involve interaction with your library (You know, books.), such as milling 3, then dealing damage equal to the combined CMC of the 3 milled cards. I'm not professing to be an R&D expert, but I think the idea's neat, it combines the burning and chaotic flavor of red with library interaction for a neat twist (yes I know it's been done with red before, but not ad nauseam). And here's the kicker: *I'm not a professional designer/writer.* This was just something I came up with off the top of my head. If *I*, a lowly nerdling, can drop an idea of moderate competence with moderate ease, I find it hard to believe Magic R&D (the group that is so good at this they do it for a living) is running out of ideas any time soon. Just keep it varied guys. Planeswalkers are a good thing, but like any good thing, too much can be more of a bane than a boon. If you actually made it to the end of this miniature essay, props. Feel free to comment & debate. Its the reason this section's here, after all.

You guys are awesome! I also agree with Planeswalkers being a huge problem. As much as I like to play them, they change so much! The new Legend rule also doesn't really make ense, now. How are there so many of the same planeswalker? But I guess this is now the multiverse we live in.

Yeah, I hate the new Legend Rule too. There really should be only one and the Legend Rule should be the same for Planeswalkers: Only one Planeswalker of any one type should be on the field between players at any one time.

Yes! Can we talk about how being unthematic being able to play a planeswalker is? I, who is somebody playing as an unnamed planeswalker, summons a planeswalker to make the game less interesting! I think the use of planeswalkers could have changed the game drastically in a much better way. I would have used them as a special player power. You play AS a planeswalker, which changes and synergizes with your deck. Sorta like Commander, but more like the Runners/Corps in Netrunner. Oh, wait, you don't know what Netrunner is? BWAHAHAHAHAH!!!

So agree with this and I do like Planeswalkers. Probably why Hero's Downfall was made.

Jesus, my friends have 2 planeswalker each and i feel the struggle having to deal with this annoying cards. They dont seem to fit in the game, i almost feel the obligation to buy one so i can have "equal" conditions to win the game. And by the way, your dad is a cool old man! Cheers

Professor would you ever consider making a video with Wedge about the direction Wizards has taken the Lore since the Mending? Ive read the books since back in the beginning and was a fan of the lore but i find Magic has lost its charm to me in terms of story....and i hate the fact that Jace is sort of the "new" Urza with the amount of focus they put on him. Anyway id love to hear your thoughts on the matter and Wedge aswell. Love the videos keep up the great work!
