I love when you fix up the starter decks. I bought my son a lilliana starter deck for Christmas. We are going to upgrade it together.

the planeswalker deck? That's much weaker than the arena starter deck. The deck is fine for learning, but you can't even really "upgrade" that without tossing out like 99% of the cards. Assuming he wants to play it at LGS and notch some wins. If you want to get him a preconstructed deck, see if you can find discounted "challenger decks". These are starter decks that are developed to be a little competitive (one won a FNM at my LGS recently). Although keep in mind, currently no challenger decks are legal in standard (the most recent ones were from kaladesh and amonkhet). Or you could get him one of the guilds of ravnica planeswalker decks, which include a code to redeem for that deck in MTGA - which is a nice added bonus.

@@Jerry-zf3ip hmm. Did not know that. I thought amonkhet was still legal. Im really just hoping I can teach him deck building with it. I have a pretty decent collection so I'm hoping to show him how to value cards and synergies.

Awesome upgrade. I upgraded mine with a focus on cards that benefit from sacrificing my own creatures, being Open the Graves the center piece of it all. It has played decently so far, but watching this video gave me new ideas for other tweaks. Thanks.

I am new to MTG and this type of videos is exactly what I needed. I made this deck a while ago and it is quite fun to play. The only problem I had were creature swarms, I recommend trading two copies of Doomed dissenter for two copies of Golden demise, it became much better (for me at least).

Glad you took a crack at a monoblack Zombies deck. Unfortunately, this and nox's attempt (even though that was Golgari) proves that right now, the Zombie tribal does not have enough support to make a proper deck out of. Hopefully with Ravnica Allegiance and Orzhov getting more support, we'll see something happen with the Zombie tag (pls no more vampires)

great guide. i found that sometimes i would like to have a few bigger bodies on the board so i tried adding demonlord belzenlok and torgaar famine incarnate and so far it works really well

Ive learned the hard way not to kill chupacabras if you dont have to. Because the backlash of them returning them from the grave is very bad.

great video. def made me reconsider the monoblack zombie deck for upgrading. id still love to see how youd do auras of majesty. i think it makes sense to move away from the auras and go towards selysneya but itd be fun to see still

I think Reassembling Skeleton is another "free upgrade" worth considering. I would use them instead of Stitcher's Supplier until you actually start adding copies of Graveyard Marshal, Gruesome Menagerie, and Liliana. And I don't know if it's worth using wildcards on, but Skeleton Archer is also a fun common for intermediate versions of the deck. He's like an on-theme Ravenous Chupacabra if you've got 4x Death Baron :)

I just started playing this game yesterday, and I'm noticing that I'm missing a number of cards for the starter version of this deck. What I don't have is as follows: Skullduggery Rise from the grave I've maxed out the Path of Infamy Mastery Tree. Any idea why these aren't available ?

I added a few "ill gotten inheritance" to this deck, it really made a difference... but i focused the deck around life point damage

Is there any way of submitting decks for you to review or something of the sort? I made a mono black undead deck that is 13-5 at the moment in best of 1. However, I don't know what to add to the sideboard to play it in best of 3 or any changes I need to make to it since it's so different doing bo1 and bo3

I think that though zombies is a fine way to go with mono black, the super low to the ground aggro deck is better. I played one before rotation, with a lot of powerful kaladesh cards, but the core of the deck is still untouched, so I quickly made a mock up: 4 Diregraf ghoul 4 Skulduggery 4 Demonic vigor 4 Dead weight 4 Sword-point diplomacy 4 Sovereign's bite 4 Dusk legion zealot 2 Dire fleet poisoner 4 Kitesail freebooter 2 Midnight reaper 4 Vicious conquistador 2 Josu Vess, Lich knight 18 Swamp

Seems like a nice alternative take on standard aggro, although without 'zombie tribal' as an incentive, flavour driven players might not want to invest in this deck. Out of curiosity, how often, if at all, is Josu Vess stuck in hand due to the land count?

@@Readceras Not too often. 18 lands has a slight advantage in the algorithm for starting hands, so getting to 4 is consistent enough to justify him as a 2 of.

Zombies are not in a good spot right now. To many flying creatures. And mono white just is the better swarm deck. But I think Legend made the best possible deck that you can hope for. Maybe put some ritul of soth and Golden demise in. If you want to play black play Golgarii mid range or value.

This is of course only one suggestion for a mono-black deck. I think LVD looks to upgrade the base deck using a lot of cards that starting players already have.

Surely the main reason for not running Cabal Stronghold would be the fact that you have to have 7 other lands in play before it does anything. These games didn't get much past 5 lands, so Cabal Stronghold would have just been a dead card.
