When it comes to deck boxes for Magic: The Gathering and other trading card games, there's a wide variety of both manufacturers and styles.
Different players have different needs, and luckily for us there's so many different deck boxes to choose from that there's the perfect fit out there for each of us.
In this video I'll be evaluating flip boxes from BCW, Ultimate Guard, and Max Protection, as well as looking at some of the basic top loaders that those companies have to offer. I'll also look at the highly distinctive Leifkicker custom deck boxes.
Understanding what each box has to offer, and ways in which some boxes may be considerably worse than can at times be difficult given the wide selection on the market today, so let's take a closer look!

Speaking of BCW, I tend to use their "660" card box to carry my decks around in my backpack rather than single deck boxes, I wish there was a more durable version of a box this long, the carboard ones wear out somewhat fast when being carried abound daily in y backpack. I'm a Yu-Gi-Oh player and so of course my cards are smaller, but I've found that the Ultimate Guard is a brilliant deck box for Yu-Gi-Oh, especially since there is more room for the smaller cards. The only time it's ever accidentally opened (and this was with two extra coats of acrylic paint over the magnets) was when I launched it across a room, with around 70 sleeved cards inside, at an insect on my ceiling that was tormenting me as I tried to sleep. That was also quite a hard throw.

When the Deck'n'Tray says 100+ cards, they really mean it. I can fit two (single sleeved) 65 card decks into one of those boxes. It's really great as someone who travels a lot to have dice and two decks in one box.

Nice, I remember the time I saw your first video about card sleeves, it was amazing I thought Ultra Pro was the best card sleeves manufacturer but after see your videos I always buy Dragon Shield or if it's posible KMC.. would be nice see a video where you teach us to recognize authentic mtg cards and difference between old cards without expansion sign.

For the BCW box, have you tried rotating the cards 90 degrees, to see if they fit any better? That would've been the first thing I'd have checked when noticing the extra space.

After watching this video, I purchased an Ultimate Guard Flip Deck 80+, and it is incredibly nice. It reeks of quality! I really wish one of the local gaming stores carried these.

I blindly bought one before watching these, and I have to say that I definitely feel vindicated. It has a lovely material for both the interior and exterior, and maybe I'm not as strong as him, but I actually had to put my entire arm to generate enough whiplash in order to force it open.

The extra centimeter or two on the BCW magnetic flip case allows a glass sleeve to fit, so for people like me who have their commander in a glass sleeve it is preferable to other similar boxes.

+Mild Milk Gamin sorry, they aren't actually glass. They are just top loaders (I didn't know they were called that at the time). It is just what my friends called them at the time for some reason. Sorry to disappoint, actual glass sleeves sound awesome though.

This review helped me avoid some of the bad choices on the market. 8 years later, i still own the Ultimate guard Monolith and 2 of the flip boxes that are in reasonable shape.

Great video yet again. I know you tend to do these when you're tired so I can see how a tiny mistake like this can be made, but I am quite certain the BCW logo on their magnetic flip box is debossed, not embossed.

To be honest I just use my old you go oh box, that came with three of his decks, it works just fine and holds a bit of decks, and I have messed with the inside so that it has slots for the decks so they aren’t just floating around aimlessly

I wonder: Why don't you really show how sturdy the Leifkicker box is. Why not show how good cards fit in and how tight it shuts. All these things get adressed with the other products, while with the leifkicker you just go over astetics which are quite debatable (since tastes are different). I doubt anyone what's to shell out 50$ for the looks alone.

Joe Ainsworth Actually, while not much of an investment, the Khans TRI-lands are great for sliver EDH/Commander because you're in 5 colors. Do you need the fetches? I actually don't feel that fetches are all too great in Commander, and I'd rather have something like the Domain lands instead.

As someone who lives in the UK, BCW products are pretty hard to get, and often pretty expensive when I can find them, which is a shame because I really like their basic boxes for storing Commander decks.

Prof, the toploader by UltraPro comes in two versions. Only the ones with artwork have the really annoying massive flap, the plain coloured ones have very small flaps, like the old illustrated ones

Mostly cause it makes my wallet glare at me lol jk I honestly love these and I want to say that I bought a UltraPro Satin Tower because of your videos, and KMC Hyper Matte and perfect fit sleeves. How durable are the Leifkicker boxes? Are they likely to get damaged or to open randomly if tossed in a backpack? If I'm going to purchase a fancy deck box like this I want to be able to bring it out to FNM regularly to show off to friends and I don't want it or my cards to get messed up during the transit in my backpack.

Let me answer the question on why you buy a Magnetic Flip open cases. They are Gunslinger holsters for decks. They provide easy and immediate access to your deck to start shuffling and playing quickly and smoothly. You'll probably only own one or two, but you will always put your high traffic decks in them, like Standard format. As these decks rotate out, so will the contents of your Flip case, just as quickly and easily as when you game. They really aren't great at protection for protection's sake, but ideal for repeated play where there may be a high frequency of pick-up games.

Yeah, when playing regularly with the same deck, it can be useful. Specially, because it has magnets and that will make it more durable than even the high quality UP satin Tower, since it closes with just a little extra bump of its own plastic to just make pressure to the "walls", and that wears off over time, but magnets don't (i think).

I know his is an old video....but it's still relevant. I REALLY wish Ultimate Guard made their Xenoskin products (specifically, these 80-100card deck flip boxes) in the vibrant lime/neon green and sky/baby blue! I have zero problems with the faux leather ones, but I'd like to get a xenoskin in those colors as well. And, yes, I'm sure it has something to do with the dyes or some other physical problem inhibiting them from producing (or at least MASS-producing at a profit) xenoskin products in anything other than bland, primary colors.

I agree with you about the new ultra pro deck boxes except, that it isn't hard to take your cards out of them everything else you say about them I agree with and the old ultra pro deck boxes are far more superior to the new unless you enjoy artwork, then the new ones artwork are better because you don't have the lid going half way through most of the art.

Hey! Great videos! Really helpful info, on boxes, sleeves and such. I used to buy in the dark, now i make clever choices! I have one question though: Which of the many boxes you've reviewed can hold a deck protected with sleeves, and sleeve protectors? Cause in my understanding this deck will be "wider" and "taller " than most other decks. Maybe you have answered this question somewhere, then just point me to the direction :) Thanks for the help! Dommercoolstuff I would imagine that it depends on the style of box. Mine is quite easy. Most appear to be similar in function to mine, and I would say that card access is likely not a problem in any of them.

I've had one since Leifkicker first advertised his boxes on reddit about a year and a half ago. Mine has life counters that are held on not by magnets, but by metal pins going through to the inside of the lid (flush with the inside). The only gripe is that the top was initially very hard to remove, since it forms a sort of vacuum seal. That is, until it formed a crack on the side that went the length of the box. It is still a very solid box and gets a lot of compliments.
