I think the problem with the ultimate guard not being able to sat closed with the magnets is due to leverage. The heavy deck boxes are far away from the hinge side. If they would have switched the playmat compartment with the card compartment it think it would have a better chance of staying closed.
Glad to see a review on Dex protection. I have recently bought the supreme game chest (about 2months ago). I use it to store my 360 card cube single sleeved 225 sleeved basic lands, about 80 sleeved tokens all on the bottom row. The top row I store 2 Edh decks in the trays as well as 2 edh decks in the boulder 100+ cases. With a little left over room for my spin down life counter and dice. It’s a great product. Holds everything but a playmat.
I have the superhive and I love it! I can bring all my decks with me easily in their boulder cases, and honestly have never faced a situation where it has been turned upside down, so never noticed its lackluster magnets lol
I'm usually not one for old chinese proverbs/saying, but this came to mind when you literally dropped a Boulder on your own foot: "Lift a stone only to drop on one's own feet" It made me smile. Seriously though, thanks for the video. My cube is currently stored in a couple fat packs, and I was looking into other options. This was very helpful!
Hey Prof, you should order a longbox of random sports cards whenever you have to use cards for product testing like that. That way you don't risk your precious decks, extras, or commons.
T4silly , I find it more exciting to watch him risk valuables... It might also be scripted, or those are sleeved commons. Either way, even if it's ironic, I like it more.
I'm pretty sure he tests off screen using cheap cards, and only uses his valuable cards when he's reasonably confident that they won't spill out. Or, in the case of the SuperHive, he knew the Boulders would hold up.
The main issue I have with using Velcro as a closure is that Velcro wears down over time, as all the loops eventually become torn and the hooks break off. I think most of these boxes, especially the Ultimate Guard, would benefit from using a simple purse or luggage style snap catch or even the rotating hook catch we've seen on other products.
i got a SuperHive for my friend last week and it managed to fit their large deckboxes from other brands just fine. and even with her playmat it still fit some (3) of the cheap 2.99 80card deckboxes ontop of the playmat, just running left to right instead of up and down. i was quite happy with it as they had a LARGE collection of decks and it fit them all with the mat
1st box was the best. I want a box that can hold individual deck boxes (the real protection of a deck) and I can't imagine a situation that I'm hold the large box upside down or where it would would be shaken like that. (You mention something about the trunk of your car. I would think that's more an issue with your driving. :P ) Solid reviews as always. If you keep making videos I'll keep watching.
Awesome, I was JUST looking into these exact products and debating on them for both my Cube and my eight commander decks. Was leaning towards the Dex Protection stuff, but now I'm sold. Thanks prof!
Ohh, the velcro sewn into the box is such a good idea!! Cause all the velcro stuff I have tried ever comes off because its glued. Thanks for the video Professor!
i use the superhive and i guess it depends on how you use it. i use it for modern nights because i have a few modern decks that i always like to take with me. otherwise i have some dice , playmats and a pack of sleeves in it if i wanna draft. i dont really have any problem with it, because im transporting it in a backpack, so the lid cant really come off, but they are indeed a little bit weak, still like it a lot, you just shouldnt throw it around, in the backpack they are fine tho.
What I want is a "Mega Hive" were it can hold 12 of the the 100+ boulders a space for some tokens and dice tray. That way it can hold a big cube as well as a large commander collection. Also, many many more strong magnets. Thanks Prof..
I like the idea of Velcro as an alternative to magnets on deck boxes and so on, but back in the day the Velcropads were stuck on with glue and after a while they would come off. Not the same application but the Velcro used on those deck boxes sound like the Velcro strap used on the internal leg channel of my goalie pads. Meaning, that it's like trying to peal a turtle to get the strap off. I'm ok with that.
Velcro? You mean "hook-and-loop" fastening and the like? (This is a reference to one of the Prof's older deck box videos about Ultimate Guard, if you didn't catch that.)
I have a 720 card cube + 200 basic lands + around 100 tokens + dice. Didn't know Dex made these - got a Creation deck box from Massdrop and love it, so I just might hop on these boxes for the cube. Thanks for the review professor, a pleasure as always!
I have been using the Dex Protection Supreme One Rows for several months now, and I have to say, they are my favorite storage solution I’ve found to date. Great quality. One can get about 550 double-sleeved cards in each one. I use a single box for each color, although I wish they would broaden the range a bit. They don’t offer a green box, nor some of the other colors that appear in their binders.
This video saved me money and headache. I needed something for the card kingdom starter cube I purchased (thanks for that recommendation too TCC) and I would have gone with a brand name ultimate guard choice over dex protection had it not been for this review. I am very happy with the "one row" I picked up as it is perfect for this need. I give this review an A+.
I've actually been waiting for this review! I've been holding off on upgrading my Dex Protection One Row to the Ultimate Guard. I'm glad I waited, thanks for the video! I love all your reviews!
Prof Brian!!! I just want to say THANK YOU! I've been quietly watch in your channel since 2013? 2014? Anyways I just want to say how much I enjoy your channel. No need to get bogged down in the swamp with these sad lonely subscribers to hate and childish antics! Anyway. 1st time writing you! Didn't mean to sound like I was blowing smoke? I just respect and appreciate your work! Keep on rocking Professor! Your friend Monty!!
I know he said the Supreme One Row and Game chest from DEX don't hold deck boxes or top loaders, but I have two chests, and I am able to store the top loaders in them, normally, with no issue. I'm tempted to buy a boulder now and see if it fits, because they seemed the same height.
Been on the fence about the ultimate guard box. I really don't like the space devoted to the playmat rather than deck boxes. The lid coming open is the deal breaker. I've got a rainbow of their 100+ boxes. Will keep looking for something to carry them in. Thank you so much!
Great video as always. Still like the hive. I need something that fits boxes, and being able to also put my playmat in, is a bonus. I dont plan on holding it upside down, or anything aside from carrying to/from my car, so the magnet isnt an issue. If there was a halfway option, where it's more secure, but fit boxes, then that would be perfect
It's simple how that smaller company owner made such nice card boxes and ultimate guard can't. Ultimate guard just care about max profit and minimal investment. By the way awesome video, really high quality stress test on your products, were so many other people simply try to hide as much cons as can.
I'm a little bummed by the magnets on the superhive, but I won't be using it to travel very much and it fits exactly what I need at the moment so I'm still going to give it a shot
For me, I love my super hive as it lets me take all I need for an event in one large box. Multiple decks, dice, and the playmat. I can slide it into my backpack, and because it’s in the backpack, I’m not worried. When I get home, I can take it out and bring it back to the card room.
While the Supreme Chest looks absolutely beautiful, I think the SuperHive satisfies my needs better. And realistically nobody's gonna be shaking the box like that lol thank you for the great review though!
Professor, I have to say the Superhive was an interest to me. Small Standard collection, handfull of decks, lands for draft and extra sleeves, and my Liliana playmat, if the magnets were strong and it came with a shoulder strap I can see a very strong argument for buying it, but unfortunetly they lost my cash after this review. Thanks for the warning!
Yeah, i saw the Ultimate Guard SuperHive at the LGS yesterday and i too wondered what its purpose really was, given the fact that the top part can not hold cards as it seems intended for a playmat or two. I don't understand why they didn't make it just that much bigger to hold cards as well. That way the tray for dice and such would then also be interchangeable with their (twin) Flip 'n Tray deck cases, which are awesome. The lid not holding under stress is unacceptable to me. Your (generous) C grade should be for caution!
I like that Dex Supreme Game Chest. I’m mainly interested in having it, if I also had enough of those deck inserts to fill it up for each of my complete decks. Unfortunately getting enough to fill up the game chest would add another $36 Which is okay, until you get to the magnets which adds some hesitation for me
I think I prefer the ultimate guard one personally as it holds a play mat. I might add a velcro strip though. I recon if they swapped the card compartment and put that next to the hinge it would be less likely to pop open.
I honestly think that superhive should get a higher rating than a C. But I do understand the magnets issue. As a commander player with alot of decks I appreciate a box to hold playmat, dice and decks. Also like how you can use different options to hold cards in the box as well. Yes you are most likely to hold deck boxes in a bigger deck box so magnets are no worry to me as they will be protected 2x and carried with care or in a bag.
30 years of collecting...and I've tried everything...the best box for my 10,000+ collection is literally a couple white card boxes. "Well. this is for decks...not collections" Fair enough....The best deck box I have found is a Bundle box. It fits 100 double sleeved cards with ease....comes with an additional separate box for tokens or dice...seals nicely...and looks cool. I guess some people just have money to burn. I could buy a $60-$80 deluxe deck box...or buy two bundles that come with deck boxes....each to their own. Crazy to hear the "Buy Singles" Professor slinging superfluous bling.
For me, with the Archive, I carry 5 boulders, 2 decks, dice, extra sleeves, and an empty one for any new cards I may get. PLUS A separate thing for my mat. So I'd like something like the Superhive. That way, I can just toss in my lands I use for drafting and always have what I need. I mean, the original Archive by Ultimate Guard you viewed as too big and unnecessary originally too. Later review said you loved it and it was perfect for anal players haha.
I have the DEX protection game chest $35 fantastic buy. I like my decks in individual boxes, It's taken a few weeks for me to trust the chest. It's more convenient without the boxes.
Love your channel man. At first you seemed kinda eh but as time went on, i love learning more and more about magic thru you. Thank alot, u have made me a better player. Id love to see more of u playing games tho.
Honestly, I think the Ultimate Guard is the best. As someone who plays multiple types of tcgs, the Ultimate Guard Hive is very useful for keeping all of my different decks together in one solid box that I can just put into my game bag and be off. Just my opinion though.
I have a carrying card case from Quiver that my wife got me for X-mas. It is awesome. I carry my EDH decks, card sleeves, and die in it. I'd be curious on your review of it, Prof.
I think one of the smaller dex boxes would be good for me, considering I don't have a lot of loose cards & like stickering things so I don't think the scuffing would bother me. Honestly, probably means the stickers would stay better
Honestly I think the concern over the magnets on the Superhive opening up when held upside down is way WAY overblown. It shouldn't be hard to not hold it upside down.
Mr. Moose yeah, my thoughts as well. I have one and couldn’t be happier. I just simply don’t carry it upside down, and if it’s in my trunk and somehow ended upside down, I’d have to say I probably have bigger problems than my cards spilling out
Accidents happen, they can be mitigated with a strong seal. What if someone who does not understand the value of your cards wants to move the box, look at it, whatever? If it locks, he/she will sit down to open it :)
Honestly i really wish we had more products for actual storage solutions. Something where we can just store thousands of cards safely and protect them at the same time. While also offering sorting such as tabs for color, creature type, card type etc etc. It would be amazing to have something like a chest that stores say 10,000 cards, stacks easily, is made of wood(kinda a humidor), stores deck boxes (boulder). I would gladly pay 100-150 for something like that.
Have you done any reviews specific to holding EDH decks and accessories? I normally like to have 3-4 deck with me, a lot of dice and a lot of token cards. For now I carry it all in like 3 different boxes, but would be nice to invest into something better. Thanks!
Peter Balogh while not made for magic cards I suggest you Google Stanley organizer, each removable compartment holds an EDH deck and the bigger compartments can be used for double sized cards.
I use an organizer to keep all my EDH decks in one spot and even bought them for my kids. That way they keep their filthy decks... I mean they can organize their decks as they want
I think the best midrange deck boxes for EDH decks according to the prof are the (Twin) Flip'n'Tray from Ultimate guard there is a small model that hold 100 double sleeved card and a bigger model that hold 200 with space for counters and dice. The main problem is that you need another box for tokens as it can get really tight especially if you use double sleeved dragon shields but to be honest most deck box made for edh don't take tokens in mind. I think the products shown in this video would be more what you look for if you want to take as much deck+tokens set as possible in a single box while having a nice product.
I'm super happy you made this video, I've been looking at products like these to find a proper storage case for Legend of the 5 Rings. The Ultimate Guard Hive would've been perfect if it held more cards like the Supreme Chest, I really want to store my 2 playmats into the same box. But I can deal with 2 playmat tubes and a Supreme Chest for my playsets of cards.
I've been using an Archive with 5 boulders since you recommended it a few months ago. Just tried your drop/shake test with it after months of use (3 modern decks, 2 of them double sleeved and a land pack of 12 of each basic with 30 empty sleeves, as well as one empty box I put draft decks in) and it held firm. Maybe the magnet thing just doesn't work with bigger boxes.
Uh, the answer to that question about the magnets, could it be maybe that the UG box is much bigger and held more stuff while the Dex protection box was only 1 row? The game chest from Dex even used velcro instead of magnets because it probably knew that size would not hold up to magnets, whereas UG stuck to magnets with the similar size box
Sadly looks like Dek Protection doesn't ship outside of the US (unless I'm completely blind in their shipping options) for any Aussies or other non-us based folk who wanted to look at their products after this video.
Well yes but that'd apply for anything that ships only to the US. I'm personally more likely to favour other companies that don't make it extra difficult to acquire their sale goods. However for those willing to use such services you're 100% correct there will be a way to get it if they REALLY want it so good call.
You know. What I really want is a long thing that I can put a commander deck in. A playmat and it'd be cool if it could hold dice. The first two are the biggies.
I wonder how many of his cards the professor has damaged just to show us which products work best. Thank you Professor, we all appreciate your lessons!
I like the little boxes inside the supreme game chest. Could anyone please tell me where I could buy 12 of these without purchasing the entire thing? Also could someone tell me how many of these boxes would fit inside the legion garage? Thankyou
I've been watching these videos but I just looked to my left and noticed a 3d printer I own. I could probably print a pretty sick box lol. Wouldn't be felt but it would be cheap!
