Mtg Deck Tech: Mono Black Discard in Throne of Eldraine Standard! 

Players: "I hate counterspells, it's like I can't even play the game. It's the worst." Mono-black discard: "hold my beer. And then throw it away."

This deck tech warmed my heart. It looks like a solid deck. People would be foolish to discard it out of hand.

Way - way -way-way back in the day, I took a discard+rack deck all the way to a big tourney final...and won. The prize was an Unlimited Black Lotus (back when it was worth about $100). So, I'll always smile when someone brings up The Wrack.

I wanted to throw out a deck that is very strong now after the bannings. Here it is... 4 Growth Spiral 2 Deafening Clarion 4 Gates Ablaze 4 Guild Summit 4 Teferi, Time Raveler 3 Circuitous Route 4 Knight of Autumn 4 Gatebreaker Ram 2 Archway Angel 3 Gate Colossus 4 Plaza of Harmony 3 Gateway Plaza 1 Temple Garden 1 Forest 1 Island 4 Simic Guildgate (the 61st card) 3 Izzet Guildgate 3 Gruul Guildgate 3 Azorius Guildgate 2 Selesnya Guildgate 2 Boros Guildgate Side Board 4 Lava Coil 4 Pacifism (fast big like Rotting R) 1 Defening Clarion 2 Tamiyo, Collector of Tales 2 Time Wipe 2 mass Manipulation I've been playing this on paper in some pretty tough shops. I have not lost a single match in 4 outings. 4-0 1st place every time. Give it a try.

I noticed the sidelong glance at Ziggy when you were talking about the cat food combo.

I love mono black discard! However I'm swapping Cavalier for DOOM WHISPERER. Discard decks often get the boardstate to where both players are topdecking, and Doom Whisperer can surveil over and over to ensure you aren't drawing a useless discard spell and instead draw another threat. I play a LOT of MBD and Doom Whisperer has been an EXCELLENT late game finisher.

Ever since the announcement of Pioneer, Ive stopped playing Arena and kinda just forgot about Standard. Dev, you are gonna be my only connection to Standard going forward, and I just want to say thank you. and thank you wizards for pioneer.

Played something very similar the past few days and the number of times people conceded was absolutely marvelous. Something about being in top deck mode on turn 3 makes people quit.

Awesome deck tech. Glad to see a decent hand destruction deck in standard. I used to have a deck with hypnotic spectors, hymns, dark rituals, and animate deads. Good times. Keep up the great work.

Played a few games with this deck on arena best of one today. One drop into double drill bit is absolutely BACKBREAKING. Vampire of the moon is an allstar in this deck, its really strong at halting aggro and plays great defensively against bigger green monsters. Cavalier is mixed for me: he's slow enough that getting to him can be rough against aggro but in control matchups he's often dead in hand. I agree with some of the other comments, DW's uncontested in the skies as long as you've been peeling removal and the card filter is doubly good with Castles.

I've been running close to this same deck for a month now... Yet, DO NOT underestimate the power of vicious rumors... especially on turn 2, then drill bit for spectacle... It has also came in handy late game when opponents are putting creatures from the graveyard back on top of their library... Or when you run Hightower, like I do lollll Great videos, keep doing your thang ✊

I made a similar deck running 4 copies of Ashiok to get rid of decks playing from the graveyard (mainly cat food) and also add a milling win condition and it’s working really well

I have a leyline of the void in my sideboard for the pesky graveyard stuff, just an honourable mention

Hand hate and Mill are my two favourite styles of play, love this deck

I've been watching your vids for a bit. I've been working on a Mono Black Discard in Arena for a few weeks. I wanted to ask you something unrelated to this specific deck, though the info in your vids has been invaluable. Since I trust your opinion on matters of Magic I thought you might be able to give me your thoughts, I'm an old player, much like yourself. I started in 3rd edition. I played solid and hardcore from 3rd ed up to the Type 2 Ice Age/Alliances block. At that point life changed and I had to retire and release my collection into the wild. I’ve been toying with getting back into the game. I'm missing the tournament play. I’ve been playing Arena to try to get a feel for the current state of the game and more recent cards. It seems different now. It seems like it’s no longer about putting together a good deck and more about dropping a game ending card. I faced a deck that had nothing in it but life and Scry lands and the Sea God enchantment. I made him discard a lot and exiled his graveyard and watched nothing but lands go into the hole. I’d been smacking him with some weenies waiting for something bigger. Then he dropped Sea God and killed me in 3. The fact that a deck composed almost entirely of land that can actually win a game feels like something in the fabric of the game broke somewhere along the way while I was gone. Since you've been with it the whole time, did you ever notice a change, or tipping point of some sort? I just feel like I’ve stepped into a completely different game from the one I remember. It used to feel like playing a chess match but now it feels more like a frantic race to a 7/8 mana unstoppable game ender. It's like M:tG brought to you by the WWE. "Oh no he's against the ropes, one more round and it's over, He DREW IT!! It wins the Game!! Game over!" Planeswalkers feel weird as well, particularly since they're immune to most spells. That much power in a card with few solutions to just seems like an attempt to make the game play faster at all costs. Am I just an old man screaming about the young whippersnappers and their Hexproof 8/8 gods or has it really changed that much?

Dev, love the deck. What are your thoughts on UB discard? I have been doing ok with it and I don't even have all the decent cards for it. Thought erasure is so good..also blue lol. Keep up the good work.

I've been playing almost this same deck on Arena, ex pet I'm splashing red just for Cavalcade of Calamity instead of rider. It catches a lot of people off guard

3:00 I thought modal spells/abilities where you can choose multiple modes at once have to be resolved in the order the modes are printed on the card (I vaguely remember this being relevant back when Dramoka's command was the most played card in standard). So wouldn't a person never discard the card they draw off of Rankle to Rankle since the discard effect would resolve before the card draw effect does? This is probably just a minor thing, but it is a rules question.

V excited for this deck Dev wanna try it on Arena! Rankle doesn't work like you think tho cos his abilities happen in the order on the card they discard then lose 1 life and draw 1. So you can only make them discard the card they drew with Rankle last turn if they've not played it.

Can the attacker order Rankle's abilities in any order they want? If I have no cards and opponent has 2, can we first discard then draw (so now I have a card)? If I have 2 cards and opponent has 0, can we first draw the discard (so I loot and he's still empty)?

Tried this deck out. Its pretty poor. Runs out of steam quick and cant handle some of these decks which can get 3+ creatures out in a few turns. It really needs a more reliable card draw.
