It also has the added bit of sounding like the word "fury" which seems about right for what these Valkyries are/do. The Furies of course were a group of 3 vengeful beings in Greek mythology.
Got a suggestion you should start telling us how many rares and mythics are in the deck and how many of them are brand new for arena crafting purposes would be a great addition to the techs thank love your work keep it up my wizard the best MTG content out there
Hey Dev - This deck list is fantastic. I built the early part of what I had to support this and played that in Historic constructed and got to gold in MTGA for the first time. I appreciate you. Keep spreading love and being kind, sir.
1:10 Ohhhh okay, that explains it. I was having a really difficult time understanding Orzhov Angels and it's probably because I was subscribed but hadn't liked the video yet. I didn't realize I needed to do both. I have now liked the video as well, and the deck makes a lot more sense. Thanks for clearing that up!
Firja's retribution is an absolute missile. II step allows vigilance creatures to attack and additionally remove a potential blocker or troublesome creature during the attackers declaration. This deck seems to be very good indeed =)
I built my own version of this deck before seeing this video, and I'm stoked to see that my choices were pretty close to yours. I don't care if it ends up being competitive or not - it's just fun to play, and I'm going to keep playing it.
I loved the Cleric deck, and these make it so much better! Running the Angels in there as the high curves, where Clerics fell flat a little, and threw in 2 Heliod for good measure. :P
Minus the dollar amount the White Castle could be considered a free roll with 10 plains main deck and perhaps with four of the castle (not saying four is the correct number) at least one of the angel spawning lands could be playable. Despite the risk to the consistency in untapped mana when you need it I’d think the castles (at least two) at the very least would be playable here. Always love your stuff dev, keep on rockin in the free world my friend :)
Hm. I went the build around Vorinclex route... I’ve been fighting angels all day. I may have gone the wrong way, sorta.. We’ll see how the testing goes. Also, that outro. I am born anew.
As always an excellent video. I miss those days of watching your videos and immediately going across the street to my local LGS and picking up the cards I was missing from the deck and bashing peoples faces in FnM and PPTQs. Now our store has all its tables piled up in a corner and it’s depressing I can’t even walk into that place :( I used to spend 5 nights a week there :(
About Righteous Valkyrie, I hate to say you this Dev, but I told you so! I knew when you previewed this card that it was much better than you seem to realize at that point. If Angels was going to be a thing, Righteous Valkyrie was card to make it work. But it takes a big man to admit he was wrong and you certainly are that giant. That being said, I've tested your deck (with a couple of small tweaks) a few times already and it rocks!
One small bonus of playing angels is that all the cards are really pretty. Eldrazi may be good, but id much rather look at angels than eldrich horrors.
I think it's Fir-ya. There's Jarl of the Forsaken in the set, which, as we know from Skyrim, is pronounced "yarrel." Maybe that was supposed to be a hint? Idk
Damn, this is going to be really meta deck. First result for "Kaldheim decks" even before release was this deck, and now your first video is this deck. Need to find a good counter for it :)
1:34 I think it's more like "Firya" since it is based on Freyja ("Friya") a Scandinavian 'J' is usually a'Y' sound rather than a 'H' sound. BTW I've been messing with Righteous Valkyrie, Rampage of the Valkyries and Maskwood Nexus to make anything an angel including Maskwood token creatures.
Angels is somewhat standard viable in MID too. Not the orzhov midrange, which I find too slow in this meta, but a mono-white aggro version. Starnheim Aspirant (and Unleashed), Youthful and Righteous Valks, Angel of Destiny and top up with select 1/2 drop white weenie clerics. Carried me to Mythic on Arena in my first set back after 20yrs. Goes under Epiphany or survives it resolving, goes under this deck too usually, competes with ramp green for midgame speed on the board if you untap with an Aspirant. Sketchy matchup with full-blooded white weenie, which is faster but lacks enough fliers to hold if it doesn't curve out well.
I like the deck, but i rather play Esper Angels. It's better than i thought. Linvala finally doing work and works better for me than the Marshall. Cool vid Dev.
Been working up my version, glad to see this tech. I think Angel of Destiny goes in, not a fan of Resplendent Marshal. I think Skyclave Cleric can grab some land spots and synergies well with Righteous Valkyrie.
Ok, love the angels tribal, but can we talk about how busted Maskwood Nexus would be in an Orzhov Angels deck combo with Starnheim Aspirant, and your deck can just go off with mana efficiency and you can also throw in tons of awesome cards that are not angels that become angels when Maskwood Nexus is in. That card is going to warp the format in my opinion. I'm sure everyone is looking to put it in an elves deck, but I really think it shines in Orzhov with all the creature type bonuses and mana sink. We will see.
For what its worth Dev, if you were to pronounce "Firjas" as it would be in Icelandic or Old Norse, the J's are pronounced as A "Y" noise. Like Yacht. Great videos as always though!
I know this was made 2 months ago and Strix is going to drop soon but curious if you have seen the Abzan Angels list utilizing Eerie Ultimatum, most of the angels you listed and the mill angel, green mill saga, binding of the gods, and ramp?
In limited I was having amazing performance out of Hailstorm Valkyrie, good enough that I think it could perform well in constructed. If you put in snow lands instead of basics (not even considering the duals which you might not want since they're tapped), you'll be able to make it huge and trample through.
I’m loving angels in standard. Well I did until I realized how stupid angels go in historic. Also why no angel of destiny? that has been an excellent finisher for me when playing my own version of angels
Can always trust on our Orzhov catlord for a great decktech! Curious if you teste a more clerics-angels build, taking a merge with the clerics from Zendikar and Vito as a lifelik payoof
Halo, guys! I went 9-3 or 10-3 tonight, just in the games i played after work. Orzhov Angels steamrolled me one of those times and i was using Izzet Giants. They are strong
Do you think blue white Angels could work at all? I like the look of the valkyries, but would still want to play Skycat Sovereign, Watcher of the Spheres, and Lofty Denial.
Like the dollar budget one thing about mtg is I tend to play low to mid budget decks. If I can find a whole deck under 100 dollars its definitely worth a purchase
Ziggy, Dev, and bit a of a playback to oldschool Dev spitting a few bars. Making my morning cup of coffee before going into work. I feel just a bit better. Thanks Ziggy! Also Dev I guess. Haha.
in Norse, i is pronounced "ea" as in ear, ( also as a short i), "j" is usually pronounced as a "y". Ergo, I think Firja is pronounce Fear- ya. I think there is a you tube video on norse / icelandic pronunciations and videos on the pronunciations of Norse gods
I've just been playing the ridiculous tibalt combo deck non-stop because it's hilarious and I'm sure it'll be banned soon. As soon as it is banned this is going to be one of the first decks I build, looks sweet man, thanks for doing all of the legwork.
Can someone explain why starnheim unleashed has 2 (X)(X) costs? Isnt it the same as having 1? If you pay 2 for one X and 3 for the other X, it makes 5 angels? So why not have 1 (X)?
@CHARLES PARTON I mean I'm currently holding a book by Old Norse specialist and PhD Mathias Nordvig (has a RU-vid channel check him out) that says "i" is pronounced as "ee" so I think I'll trust him.
