MTG Lore: I Am Avacyn 

Looks like Avacyn won't be sorin through the skys anymore.....

Avacyn was my favorite MTG character. I loved her so much that I made her costume for Halloween and Cosplayed as her at a convention. All my friends knew how I avoid spoilers and prefer to be surprised at the prerelease but when I decided I wanted to dress up as Avacyn at a Midnight Pre-release they were like "someone has to tell her before she finds out by walking in and someone tells her she's dead!" I ended up running into the Anguished Unmaking art and flavor text 2 days before the prerelease and was devastated. When I heartbrokenly went to 3 different groups of friends I found out that they all knew and none of them had the heart to tell me. >_

I am so sad Avacyn is dead cause she was such a great character, but it made a great story.

The fact the Sorin looked away as he unmade Avacyn makes it seem as if he actually had an emotional attachment to his creation.

"He spoke ancient words. A ritual, a promise, but backwards. Taking back a gift he had once bestowed onto another." What a line, still gives me chills

Avacyn was the reason I even gave the color white a chance, which lead to my first red-white deck in Avacyn Restored. I even made a red-white SoI deck in honor of her this time around. R.I.P. Angel of Hope. You are and always will be my favorite legendary creature. :'(

When I was reading SOI I was hoping Sorin would manage to cleanse Avacyn of the corruption and that this would be enough to Ignight a Plansewalker spark in Avacyn she would be an Angel Plansewalker.

I read "I am Avacyn" the same way I heard "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath. Yes, something is wrong with me.

And them good old demons were sucking marrow and blood saying this will be the day we un-die! I don't even know what this is anymore but it was fun!

You know some of my friends often felt that Wizards of the Cost never gave a good reasons as to why Sorin could not make another Avacyn. I told them that more then likely Sorin created his arc angle and the Helvault pre-mending, and see as he is kinda a introvert and out of touch with the going on of other planes, just assumed his drop in power was do to the incredible amount of magic needed to create them. What do you guys think?

Hey guys, quick update! I got a new computer last Sunday and since then I've been tweaking with the audio settings. I'm not able to get the quality I expected. An Angel that we all could learn from. A figure of hope, love, faith and honor. May her lessons live on in our hearts so that we never fall to the corruption and so we never give in to the evil that she protected us from.

Well she has bit the dust

sorin is such a badass, I cant imagine what he was feeling when he had to unmake avacyn...

Turning Avacyn into a parched angel much have left her creator feeling Sorin the chest. At least she had a funeral by pire.(pyre) Too bad she didn't listen to him, he had to wing it. Despite this, Sorin's judgement was a bit harsh. Maybe a new angle would be the best way to combat Nahiri. His old method of stonewalling her didn't seem to do much. Now he will have to deal with Emrakul appearing innistradosphere. Perhaps the old chapel have something besides Avacyn in the basement to help him fight. If things keep going on the way they have been, Jace bettarun before the stakes are too much for even Sorin to take. Then again, Sorin has proven that he can dish out extreme punishment if you are in Avacynity around him. Trust me, Sorin's Vengence is something you don't deal with. I don't know if I can think of a more Grim Nemesis to face than the Lord of Innistrad. I passed him in a draft once, and I still have a Markov shame.

What do you call an angel that does bad things? Ava-sin heh... heh..... *quietly leaves*

I truly love hearing the lore of magic! This is one of my favorite characters, shame she had to die, or is she really gone? Just have to wait and see!

Wow, I was sort of expecting the ending though because of the card languish unmaking but still..... no more avacyn :( I love your channel Sabien MTG, in my opinion it's the best way to learn about mtg lore (only way I do :p). Also I feel so lucky to have started to truly get involved with MTG just before SOI because it is just an amazing set! And im sure I'm not the only one to think that.BRING ON ELDRICH MOON!

As a fan, I was devastated by this ending, despite it being known thanks to Anguished Unmaking. It was a lot more sad to read it and see this from Avacyn's point of view, and really does make us sympathize with her and what's been done to her for really a stupid misunderstanding by Nahiri.

I've watched many episodes but never Avacyn one so interesting that I had to comment! Love your work, keep it up!

lol, when the set SOI was being designed, it was codenamed TEARS by the staff. Definitely worthy of the name!

I love the art work change of the avacyn card. "I'm here to help!" "Are you ready to die for your sins mortal!?"

What makes this story so hard to read. It's Sorin looking away as he Un-makes her. He poured everything he had into Avacyn. The cruelty and sadness Sorin has to feel must have been unbearable. I always think at the end of the story. "No good deed goes unpunished."

Avacyn Restored was one of my favorite sets. I pulled Avacyn in that set and fell in love with her lore. It's funny because my friend's favorite character is Sorin and he always reminds me that he made (and now killed) my favorite angel. I will make a commander deck for her so she can live on. Thank you for these lore videos. This one and "to kill a titan" are my favorites so far.

You were able to conjure an eldrazi into my world with your strength alone. I should already be a mangled corpse in your home. So?" The blades grew closer. But then they dropped. "I dont have the energy to kill you sorin. Between holding an ember of what was once my spark and all of this...all i want to do is scream and run." Sorin shruged. "I understand that feeling. More then you know. Tell me,do you know why i made Avacyn?" "That archangel i fought? Not really. Your point?" "I made avacyn as a manifestation of my promise to protect innistrad and its people. She was made with my blood,my magic and my steel as a promise that there would be a dawn that would always come. And i unmade her. I came here because i see with perfect clarity the extent of what ive done. I should have been there on zendikar years ago,even if i was asleep. I should have done something to help you or at least try. And i should have tried to do something when phyrexia came. You used to be a kind and merciful person nahiri. Yet here you are, maddened and utterly insane. The people of zendikar as you know them have long left this world." "Then what should do? Leave them?" "...i never said that. But if you want to help zendikar,help yourself first,before you do something you cant undo. think on that." Sorin began to leave. And nahiri looked at her surroundings. The lithomancer finaly let herself colapse...and her eyes shut. To sleep for the first time in who knows how long... To be continued

The Planeswalker Arlinn's world is in disKORD! Avacyn should've paid attention to her Markov Manners! I don't know which demon I like most, Griselbrand ORmendahl! I think I Hav-a-cyn that I need to be forgiven of! I'd like this card for my Highlander deck, but it doesn't go in the SORINson blue Canadian Highlander deck! I heard that Nahiri is on the run, I hope Sorin is going to JACE her down! Sorin just beat Avacyn in a fight, Git-Rogged, Avacyn! This church has everything, and really like it, but I told the Saint that it's a bit TRAFTY in here! Dang, Jace, you're really DELVing into these SECRETS! After Sorin killed Avacyn, he SKULKED out of the church! What is this MADNESS? Has Sorin succumbed to DELIRIUM? We should INVESTIGATE this further! I wonder if Garruk is still SKULKING around! Vampirism... it's the MARK OV the Markov bloodline! Seriously the injuries Sorin got during that fight will certainly leave a SKAAB! Olivia Voldaren should be bald, so whenever she goes to a party she could say "Vold-ar-in the house!" Seriously, the guards guarding the church are scary! I heard one of Sigarda's angels tell Avacyn that her church has a "Sick-gard-brah!" I'm going to call you "Ben" from now on, because whenever you say a bad joke, I can say "SIGH...Ben!!!"

I've bought 3 boxes and 2 fat packs and won 2 tournaments, paying out with 8 boosters each and have still not pulled an Avacyn. For the love of god if I ever win one card from you, make it this one. Please!

Bummed that one of my favorite characters is gone. Avacyn is the commander of my angel deck. Still need the new one so it has all the variants of Avacyn. Ah well, at least Sorin is still around.

It really sucks that Sorin had to unmake Avacyn. He rushed ahead where angels fear to tread. I feel staked in the heart, like, I just want to fly away.

It might of been just Devil's Play or just another Blasphemous Act that drove me to Murder that Doomed Traveler, but I now know that I have Dead Weight on my shoulders due to the Divine Reckoning of the Dearly Departed. I Hope you can forgive me for my Desperate Ravings, but I have a Feeling of Dread that might be caused by my Madness or it may be just a Curse of Misfortunes. This is my last Plea for Guidance before I'm sent to the Gallows at Willow Hill, so can you please explain to the Gavony Township that it was my Evil Twin who did it and not I?

Hey Seiben, i got some questions for you, What do you think Eldritch Moon is going to be about? We Know for one part that Sorin is going to battle against Nahiri/Gisa, that's confirmed with Olivia, mobilized for war, but, what about Geralf?, and Thalia and the order? and finally what do you think Jace, Tamiyo and Lilliana (crowman)will do now that Avacyn is unmaked? i will like to see a video about that, or a tweet... thx (sorry about orthography)

:D I wish Avacyn had got a CLUE. The fact Sorin had to unmake her was MADNESS. -_- I suppose in the next set Jace will INVESTIGATE and discover the true source of all of the shenanigan's in Inistrad. It was pretty badass that Sorin didn't SKULK in fear of Avacyn; and took her on like a bad ass. I would love for sorin to create a new Avacyn... and in the next set we get an Avacyn Restored card or something. Nahiri is coming for sorin and he will need all of the help he can get... and I am hyped for a new Liliana vess card next set. Maybe they will reveal that one of the demon lords are behind the madness on the plane.

I dont buy the whole, "revenge for what happened to Zendikar" motive. To me this is a simple ex-lovers quarrel between Sorin and Nahiri. Once Nahiri arrived on Innistrad, had her little ball busting talk for Sorin not going to her aid in Zendikar, she saw Avacyn and something on her mind snapped and deduced that Sorin chose Avacyn over her for companion. She got jealous, kicked the "new girlfriend" ass and tried to take Sorin by force, failed, and got thrown into the Helvault where she had countless years to plot the ultimate scorned ex-girlfriend revenge........and the rest is MTG history. Well that's at least my lame conspiracy theory :P

I pulled an Anguished Unmaking in my SOI pre-release box, I was super bummed for Sorin, cuz it gave me a heads up about how the Avacyn story was going to end. I'm excited to start hearing more about Eldritch Moon!

I love both of the artworks for Anguished Unmaking, especially the promo. They capture the emotion of the moment, in which Sorin must end Avacyn, who is almost like his daughter, perfectly.

What a great, yet sad ending for Avacyn... I'm betting that left him a little SOR-IN upset to have to put his protector down like that. I hope its worth whatever deal he worked out and this army will set Innistrad right, cause I feel a great battle is nahir...i. It would be great to see the vampires bring order to the plane and I hope they O-livia, but it's too early to tell. Maybe even an OB-stacle might arise for Nihiri as she fights with her ;-) demons? I haven't a clue. Either way, we'll soon have a "full moon" on our hands that will answer all our quest-ions and give us the rest of story. This sets lore has been excellent so far, really enjoying the flavor, story, and playing it as well. Thanks to you Seiben, for making these videos, which are much more fun to watch than to just read! Looking forward to more content!

You could have mentioned the part where Sorin is like: "IDGAF if you kill them (Jace and Tamiyo)" Too bad, wish Jace would have died.

Anáil nathrach, ortha bhas betha, do cheol déanta...Sorin broke what could not be broken...he spake the charm from end to begining...thus he became the king without a sword and Innistrad became a land without a king.... (appropriate nods to Nigel Terry and Excalibur as a whole)

Damn, that was actually really emotionally evocative... Am I the only one that thinks that would be ruined if Wizards just undoes it and bring Avacyn back somehow? There needs to be some semblance of permanence for an actual goodbye... Right?

Avacyn, with the head of her spear buried in her creator's chest, leans forward, whispering low to the vile vampire, "Stabbed through the heart, and you're to blame. Darling, you give love... a bad name." ... or something silly like that. XD I remember when Anguished Unmaking was spoiled. A lot of folks got up in a tizzy about it being too big of a spoiler. But in this case, I feel like this story is proof of 'Context is Everything'. And now that we have context, there is so much more weight to the card. Actually, what is funny is that the card didn't even give it all away, since the art isn't accurate to the state that Soren was in when he unmade Avacyn. Granted, he was on the mend already, but he had to have looked quite the mess. XD

You know what would be hilarious? If a player used Descend Upon the Sinful to exile red Avacyn! Flavourwise, would a second Avacyn appear to destroy the first Avacyn? Would the second Avacyn be committing a sin by doing so and then need to be rathed as well? Would this pattern continue for eternity? Wizards! These are the questions that need answers!

They didn't just kill Avacyn, they completely revoked her existence... how rude. Lets get an Angel Planeswalker now to make up for this.

Post-corruption Avacyn wasn't as aloof as her previous self, as she went from Sorin through the sky alone to seeking out people to kill. If you wanted to see her, you didn't have to Jace her all over Innistrad! Rest in Peace, Avacyn. T_T

Much like many MTG angels before her Avacyn could not save herself. Let's hope that Sorin doesn't have an existential crisis like General Tazri, otherwise Nahiri's rampage will be stopped by no one.

Spoiler warning in case you haven't watched this video yet. People should watch the video before reading comments anyway =P In the last FNL Seiben asked what do you guys think would happen to Jace. I knew he wouldn't die but I feel stupid to not have guessed that it would be Sorin to save him. I knew about the card Anguished Unmaking and I knew Sorin would end Avacyn but I guess I just totally forgot about it. I wonder if Sorin could have destroyed Avacyn even if they weren't in the cellar. Maybe that cellar was special in the sense that it's the only place Sorin could uncast her.

Looks like Avacyn FLIPED out. To bad Sorin couldn't just WALK away. I bet jace has no CLUE of what to do.

Really is a shame to bring something you created to its Utter End, but Avacyn couldn't possibly be Vindicate-d after the atrocities she committed. A shame she had to pay the Ultimate Price, at the hands and (Doom)blade of her creator and more-or-less father. Unfortunately, the consequences of the Decree of Pain she issued warrant nothing short of Damnation; what she did was Murder. I'm sure hoping Sorin and the rest are able to Unmake this mystery.
