I still feel Pauper is the most competitive and interesting format. You can no longer "buy" your victory because your cards are "better" than opponents.
Professor, it was so awesome to meet you at the GP in Oakland! I was looking for a new deck to build in pauper, and since I already have a dredge legacy deck and a Living End modern, this fit kind of the theme of what I like to play. I kept it almost exactly the same, except for the addition of a couple Macabre Waltz's and 3 Vines of the Vastwood and it's doing great. Thanks again for the videos!
13:04 »And if you have any questions, you can email us at (raises voice) thoughtseizeyou@gmail.com ...« *awkward silence* (expecting a followup) *video ends* ...okay.
+Tolarian Community College Just a few months ago those Cards (the non-reprinted ones) were fractions of fractions of their price... Wow. Like Liliana, so much for that Promo reprint, banning Cruise and Pod really put GB Attrition Decks back on the map. >_
Tolarian Community College Hrm... But it was sort of a sketch where they really weren't recommending to buy that, right. I think I'm too dumb to figure that out.
+Drew Peterson It was meant as a joke. They were *as a joke* saying that those cards were a great bargain. Then they transition to talking about the $2.00 Pauper deck.
I love this deck! Took it down my lgs today and played it with the only other pauper player in store, loved the synergy in this deck. Best thing is other players got interested in the format and they now want to build pauper decks so hopefully we'll have a player base within the store I go to.
This deck can be insane with *Tortured* *Existence* and a few more tweaks. I almost never lose with my golgari deck, it's a more controlling build than agro and runs my opponent out of cards and never runs out itself.
As a pauper beginner, I'm home brewing a couple of decks to "soften the blow" of two major issues I had as a casual player branching out into competitive play and that was mulliganing, and card draw stability. From my experience Golgari, and Jund, for those more resourceful, are the best colors for pauper or MTG introduction in general IMHO. I'm working on a couple of homebrews now, albeit I am a sucker for thematic aesthetic. The first is a Golgari Wall manaramp control spider deck I dub arachniphobia, and the second is a Jund mana ramping "fodders revenge" elemental deck that I am considering an optional ponza sideboard on. I'm pretty socially atomized ATM, so casual testing is out of question for me, as well as immediate feedback from my local pauper discord community, so I suppose I'm crowdsourcing and metaphorically wailing on a wall to see what sticks. Thanks for hearing me out.
+harel Hazan-Fuchs Yes I definitely misspoke there, and it is unfortunate because that was something I wanted to point out. The sentiment is the same, Commune is not as good as grisly salvage, unlike other similar decks we really want to hit our 3rd and sometimes even forth land drop with this deck, and commune not aiding in that is unfortunate but doable if kept in mind. Thank you for pointing this out and I hope people see it.
+Turn One Thoughtseize It was noticed by others (namely, me), and this comment is definitely being seen. Maybe you guys could send +Tolarian Community College a quick re-record of that segment, just in case? This is a great deck idea, and will have a huge impact in Pauper, if it isn't already. I really wish Pauper could gain a bit more notoriety as a competitive format, so that it could maybe be up for consideration for GPs, PTs and TCG Opens. I think this would be a super fun format to watch on an official MTG-commentator stream. Plus, it would allow those of us who want to become part of these big-time events the opportunity to play without having to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on decks, on TOP of already exorbitant travel expenses. Wizards already has an established 'Eternal Weekend'. Why aren't Pauper and EDH tournaments considered for those?
+TheDemko WotC has little reason to support Pauper on such grand scales as a GP or PT because it doesn't drive sales in the same way other constructed formats do. People will open boxes and cases to find mythics, but they'll buy their commons for pauper for 10c-25c from a store (even though logically, those roles should be reversed).
+DontBeShai Does anyone really believe that Legacy and Vintage drive actual pack sales in any way, shape, or form? Modern, *MAYBE*... Standard, for certain... but definitely NOT Legacy or Vintage. Those decks are all full of traded or cards purchased on the secondary market. Wizards doesn't see a dime of those, and yet, those formats are supported on grand scales.
Sayter Wayfinder is quite good in dredge decks. Most pauper green black graveyard decks run them. Tortured Existence and Grim Harvest are great recurring engine cards.
in this deck you need to be able to get creatures while you fill your graveyard, what satyr won't do. and i feel macabre waltz will work better than grim harvest since both gives you two delve creatures from the yard and allows you to discard either a dredge engine or viscera dragger
Hey Prof, love that you're always spotlighting these podcasts. I've been listening to these guys for a while now--they're really informative! good to see em getting some spotlight too. Keep up the good work, as always!
I've got a Commander Tech for Nekusar. It is a draw-burn build, and it is tons of fun to play. you make it really difficult for the other players to hate you. I call it... "The True Meaning of Christmas." Use cards like Howling Mine, Dictate of Kruphix, and Kami of the Crescent Moon to add to the draw count, and then use Fate Unraveler and Spiteful Visions to punish the opponents for having the audacity to have a draw step. cards like Day's Undoing and Wheel of Fortune help accelerate the burn and are great for disrupting hands and strategies. if you'd like, i can share my full list with you.
This is still my favourite deck tech. Although I made changes as it is so customisable, it hammers people over again and is just so much fun to play. Thank you Professor, you have been my greatest teacher!
5:37 "We take a land or an enchantment instead of a creature." But wait, Commune of The Gods reads: "You may put a CREATURE or ENCHANTMENT from among them into your hand." "It's not quite as good as Grisly Salvage as we can't grab creatures with it." YES, YOU MOST CERTAINLY CAN. It's LANDS you can't grab with it. Also, I might just build this. It looks pretty fun. Very cool video.
Great video, just one thing...More Pauper Deck Techs Please!! Also videos on sideboards....I just suck at them and want to get better a building and more importantly uses them. Keep up the great work. Your channel is my number 1 place for all things Magic.
I love the opening radio show talking about Inquisition of kozilek savings: "Inquisition of kozilek, two printings, this should easily be a 25 or 30 dollar card..." right now in February 2016, yup, its a 25-30 dollar card! They were right!
I just had another great idea. Instead of using some of these other removal spells, why not use Dead Weight? It's an enchantment that gives -2/-2, so the effect lasts unlike Disfigure, and you can also tutor for it (more or less) when you cast Commune with the Gods.
Yeah I agree but for me I'm debating if I'm going to put geth's verdict, diabolic edict and or dash Hope's as a few cards for my side board so should I?
What about Tortured Existence? 1 mana enchantment, 1 mana and discard a creature to return a creature from your graveyard to your hand. This card synergizes amazingly with stinkweed imp because you dredge 5, put the imp back to your hand, then 1 black mana and pitch it to get any delve creature back from your grave. And next turn the imp is already in the grave.
I don't know if it depends on the play group, but Chainer's Edict was never printed as a common. So in it's place I put a Diabolic Edict in. One in the main board and one in the sideboard.
Commune with gods at 5:43 does say it's for creatures. Also so far at least until theros rotates i'm seeing a mostly standard pauper, but we'll see. (as oppose to the modern pauper i know this likely to be).
We're going to start having pauper tournaments at my college for our game club. I'm going to have to try this out. I'll have to switch out the Chainer's Edict for paper magic, but that's not hard to do. My first thought was putting another Doom Blade in the sideboard to replace Edict and taking the Doom Blade and one Hooting Mandrills out of the main board to put in two Greater Mossdogs. Greater Mossdog just makes two more cards you can dredge with in case you don't get that Stinkweed Imp.
I thought a nifty idea would be for you to analyze the concept or theory of MTG becoming a LCG compared to remaining a TCG and what impact that could and would have on the health and future of MTG.
+Ethan Ford Ford It's a living card game. Essentially every player will buy a sealed product and that is what you are allowed to build your deck with. Everyone is on equal footing financially as there's no such thing as any one card's value since there's no rarity. If you buy Expansion X of the game then you know exactly what you're going to get in the box. You lose the limited format as there aren't any boosters but the constructed format is a lot more accessible.
I've got a list of this that i put together, it's mostly the same, but i've tweaked it a little to be a bit more control-ish with Treasured Find to get stuff back as well as Spider Spawning, and it works beautifully: 4x Gurmag Angler 4x Hooting Mandrills 4x Putrid Imp 4x Stinkweed Imp 3x Treasured Find 4x Wild Mongrel 4x Evolving Wilds 7x Forest 4x Jungle Hollow 7x Swamp 3x Bone Splinters 4x Commune with the Gods 4x Spider Spawning 4x Grisly Salvage And Yes, I'm aware of the fact that it isn't FULLY pauper, it's just a casual deck.
ghastly demise prices have jumped, but i still picked it up because it's still insanely cheap. i'm new to the game and am having a lot of fun with this deck. thanks for the budget info!
I have to chime in and say that Satyr Wayfinder should be in the deck. Hitting land drops while dredging is important and the satyr makes it work. If we really want to go all-in on graveyard, then Drown in Filth could be of some use, though I wouldn't play more than two copies.
+wicksterwaza Amusingly enough, Legacy Dredge is not only ridiculously powerful, but you could pick up the entire deck for less than the cost of just those Liliana's in the opening sketch. Plus, you get to play in Legacy which is just incredible fun.
I had no idea Inquisition had gotten so expensive either, Professor. Nobody expected it. On a completely unrelated note, I suppose I ought to sell some of my spare Inquisitions...
As much as I like the look of this deck, I think I might go UB instead of GB. With Blue, I can play Tiagem's Scheming which allows me to stack my draws and gets rid of things I don't really need (as well as allows me to put Stinkweed into the grave). I can play Anticipate which helps me dig for my main cards. I can play Ponder and Preordain, all of which dig for me. I can play some counters for removal. And all of these, while a bit slower, still add to my grave count while giving me Delve fodder. And I could even play Delver. Just a thought on this. I'll try both
Victim of Night could be good removal for this deck. I also like Distress instead of Duress. Its like a turn 2 Thoughtseize with out the lose of life. I do understand turn 1 is better though. It's just a thought. Awesome video! I've been wanting to make a Pauper deck. I even have most a good amount of these cards already.
I wasn't expecting the Monty Python! Btw is it just me hearing things, Professor, or when you were hitting the radio were the static sounds going "Pau-per! Pau-per!"?
Nice one there! But +Tolarian Community College Why would we not run "Commune with Nature" over or in addition to "Commune with the Gods" here? Greets Xari :)
So... Would a deck of Bloodbond March and Dredge work ? Not to be a serious deck, or maybe it just might be every now and then, but mostly for fun, since we mostly play fun multiplayer 3-4 players. Just to screw with everything and have some mayhem. If Dredge starts to work this may take off quite a bit ?
as of today, Ghastly Demise in itself is like... 4.26 tix on mtgo. I'm boarding in 2 more Doom Blades to make up for that, keeping it in the $2 spirit :3 Almost done building this deck! Loving the looks of it!
Funny fact I just got Modern Event Deck. I found a somewhat local store that was selling then at $75. It is 2hour drive so I decided to get shipping. But I do believe $75 is a good price since the cards have gone up in value.
love the deck I decided to make it my first pauper deck just got my friends into pauper were working on getting a pauper event going on at fnm although I did change the deck a bit i took viscera dragger out for exhume it makes drawing 2 creatures off grisly salvage pure value and also lets me get out a gurmag on turn 2
lol, this is awesome. have there been any new pauper decks in the past year? or is the format pretty much the same as it was in 2016? there have been some bannings but have there been any new decks to come about since many of these 2015-2016 pauper deck techs were made???? am just getting into pauper now :(
Hey everyone, I was wondering if any of you could give me some tips about this standard deck I was thinking about building: Decklist:4x Firedrinker Satry4x Monastery Swiftspear3x Zurgo Bellstriker1x Hall of Triumph 4x Arena Athlete2x Searing Blood4x Hammerhand4x Titan's Strength 2x Coordinated Assault 4x Lightning Berserker4x Lightning Strike2x Mardu Scout2x Goblin Heelcutter2x Scab-Clan BerserkerI'm trying to play on a budget which is why I'm not playing cards like Eidolon of the Great Revel. Thank you!
I wonder how viable it would be to add in Clear the Mind and have the ability to keep doing this over and over again. Sounds like a great idea unless someone can convince me otherwise.
Recently stitchers supplier got printed at common its a 1/1 for one that mills you 3 when it enters and dies and it’s so good in dredge it even sees modern play. Definitely pick up as many as possible and they could be the new delver if dredge picks up in popularity which could happen cuz Dmir can surveil a bunch of stuff. Black blue green standard dredge anyone?
besides the flashback cost, why do people choose Chainer's Edict when for the same cost Diabolic Edict is instant speed, and when was Chainer's Edict a common?
Gave me couple good ideas thx alse here is some recommendation. don't look discard as a chore like it as an opportunity Avatar of Discord, small pox pox, all grate put your defiant minions into place that is the graveyard, and as much as not a format thing Dark Ritual (my faw thing in magic) is the perfect combo with Avatar of Discord, Life from the Loam gets your lands back so its sin not to abuse it in a dredge deck :D ~ this become master peace, abuse discard, to dredge to discont with cards in grave, this game is an art :D
+Gert Couwenberg He only mills 4 so I didn't run him, but that's the beauty of the deck, if you need more chump blockers in an aggro heavy meta replace Commune with wayfinder.
