I have gotta be honest when I say I have *slept* on Ancient Tomb. I knew it was a really good land, but damn I did not expect it to be #1 on a list with Tolarian Academy, the Tron lands and Mishra's fucking Workshop. I don't think Coffers ever did much outside of Block and Standard. It usually won't start netting extra mana until turn five, and unlike Nykthos, it's a dead card in the early game. The idea of Coffers being a powerhouse mostly comes from Commander. Even then it only really shines in mono black. Once you start adding more colors to the mix you need to start jumping through hoops to make Coffers good.

when i was a young teen i had an artifact deck i was really wanting to take to the next level. i planned to buy 4 mishra's workshops for it. i saved for months and planned to buy them as they were 249.99 at the time. but my parents told me i couldn't spend $1000 on 4 cards. i remember them saying things like "who knows if this game will even exist a few years from now, and then you would have thrown away your money." that seemed reasonable as magic was relatively new at the time, and most games do fail at some point. so i didn't buy them. it's funny / unfortunate to see how much it cost me that i didn't buy them at the time. that $1000 would have turned into about $15,000.
@kjmergen

The stock market went up slightly-higher than that over that period: Your $3799 Workshop now vs $4224 now if you'd have put it in a general fund. Having said that, it'd have been worth FAR MORE in play value because you would've had four freaking Workshops!!!

@zarator7429

The problem I can see with that is that it'd be hella hard to search for them on any MTG search engine like Scryfall. If you check most of Nizzahon's chosen themes, they're generally relatively straightforward to look for: a type, a specific ability, or something like that. "Strictly better" is nothing like that, you'd basically have to search through all 22k existing cards or so by hand, and that'd be a ridiculous task

Academy got me second in states (Standard), losing to another academy deck. During the tournament I won one game before my opponent was able to even draw a card, and I lost one game before I could ever draw a card. That was not that uncommon with that deck. This was the most consistent and resilient combo deck I had ever played (Talking standard). If you had not won by turn 3, you had a horrible draw, or you were against a deck built to beat Academy....which meant you won on Turn 5.

It hurts to see Gaea's Cradle at number 8 ultimately because it is so overwhelmingly busted that it can't possibly be legal in any non-legacy/vintage/commander format. Worse is seeing Nykthos one slot above it just because Nykthos is used as a pseudo Cradle in Devotion decks, but is itself a little more demanding to run. Not by a ton, but paying 2 mana and requiring devotion for value is a little worse than just adding the mana you need in a single activation. Also quickly realizing just how many of these I run in my favorite commander deck. Boy oh boy, do I have a problem...

Not to be a nitpicking nerd, but, most of the artifacts used with Tolarian Academy were not from Saga Block. The ones that I remember were Mox Diamond, Lotus Petal, Mana Vault, Urza’s Bauble (3), and Voltaic Key in Type II [Standard]. These are from Stronghold, Tempest, 5th, 5th, and Saga respectively. I ran 19 artifacts in my Academy deck. Tolarian Academy was banned in every format (restricted in Type I [vintage], which is effectively the same thing) before Legacy or Destiny came out. The Academy deck didn’t use Saga artifacts (except Voltaic Key), and the good artifacts from the block, like Memory Jar or Grim Monolith came in Urza’s Legacy. Artifacts in Saga itself were not played in Academy, except key, and the only other good ones, Fluctuator and Smokestack weren’t used with Academy. Sorry to be that person, but I remember those days, and that deck in particular, and that’s just a little clarification that is due to that point.

@versa751
@versa751 Год назад
I think you dont understand how much more abusable Tolarian Academy is compared to Gaia's Cradle... the prevalence of 0 CMC artifacts and cheap artifact tokens and artifact LANDS means that TA could NEVER be let off the commander ban list. Also ALL the new dual color artifact lands are indestructible... and can be duplicated by something like prototype portal for infinite lands. Do you know any spells that can exile LANDS? because there are only two I can think of and they wipes everyones lands and are expensive. Also, dont forget it produces specifically BLUE mana so it pays for counterspells, thoughtcasts/thought monitors etc. Unlike Gaia's Cradle, TA is TOO fast and has TOO much protection it enables.
